Yesterday started bright and sunny, but the
sunshine gave way to sunny spells, and it was
around midday that the sky completely clouded
over. Mostly it was fairly light cloud, but from
time to time the clouds turned rather grey. The
last hour or two of daylight featured some
sunshine. It was a rather cool day with the
temperature around 8° C maximum.
On the
day the pubs are allowed to re-open to
serve cusomers sitting outdoors it is
going to be a perishing day with
snow. The early forecast said
there would be light snow at 10am. It
actually fell at about 7.30am.
It wasn't exactly a blizzard,
and it didn't settle even with it
being under 2° C outside with frost on
a few shed and car roofs. The 8am
revision to the forecast said there
should have been heavy snow an hour
ago, there wasn't, and light
snow now, there isn't ! Fog is
forecast for 11am. The 9am revision
has removed all mention of snow and
fog, but it now shows 1pm as being
dull and 4° C - 1pm would be when I
might have met Angela for a lunchtime
drink if it had been warm and sunny.
There could be sunny spells later, and
by late afternoon the temperature may
peak at 8° C again. It is going to be
a cold start tomorrow, but there could
be sunny spells for a lot of the
morning. The afternoon may be dull,
but by late afternoon the temperature
may reach 11° C.
Yesterday was probably rather
typical of a Sunday - mostly boring.
That is more true of the afternoon. As
I described yesterday, I was semi busy
in the morning. The most important
thing I did yesterday was to take a
backup of my PC. It took several
hours, and that long wait made me
think about a future job I have to do.
I think I mentioned yesterday that I
have had hints that the main 2TB hard
drive in my PC is getting unreliable.
I found a few photos corrupted. It was
that corruption that spurred me to
make the backup yesterday.
One problem with my current PC
is that it seems to have a design flaw
in it. It is only an ill informed
guess, but it seems like there is a
bottleneck in the data busses. Moving
data to and from a USB3 equipped hard
drive should be lightning fast, but it
seems no faster than USB2, and
sometimes slower. What's more is thata
while the data transfer is taking
place the computer feels exceedingly
sluggish.
I have to admit it is clutching
at straws, but I noticed that there
are now "second user" 4th generation
i5 processor PCs on Amazon that are
fairly cheap, or even fery cheap. My
current PC is a 3rd generation i5
processor PC. It is going to cost me
£137, or roughly the same price as my
current PC cost 6 months or so ago, to
find out of my theory hold any water,
or if it is nothing but a pipe dream.
My hope is that with the old
and new hard drives connected to the
new PC, when it comes in a few days
time, and with the PC booted from a
live CD of disk utilities, I will be
able to clone the old to the new hard
drive in rather less time than it
would take in my current PC. Even if
it is a lot quicker it will still be a
slow process, and I'll be off line for
most of the day.
I was often bored enough, or
perhaps not distracted enough, to feel
hungry when I really shouldn't have
needed to eat yesterday, and in the
afternoon I had a few snacks. That
limited my options for dinner. In
theory I could have knocked up some
sort of healthy dinner, but I took the
easy path, and had a couple of cans of
"chunky" soup. That stuff seems
to have less or equal sugar in it than
"no added sugar" soups, but has the
advantage of being very nice -
something the Heinz "no added sugar"
soups are not.
I wanted to be up early this
morning for my Monday morning shopping
trip to Aldi, and so I thought I
wanted to be asleep early as well. It
seems another part of my brain had
different ideas, and it took ages,
well, at least a couple of hours
before I fell asleep last night.
Once was asleep I seemed to
sleep rather well. They felt
dreamlike, but I know I got up a
couple of times for a wee in the
night. I then woke up far earlier than
I wanted, at about 5.45am, not busting
for a wee, but feeling freezing.
It was very cold this
morning, and I only had the heater on
low. That would have been OK if I
hadn't kicked off the duvet, or much
of it, at some time in the small
hours. I did need a wee, at that time,
but not desperately. I turned the
heater up full on my way to the
toilet, and made sure only my face
wasn't covered by the duvet when I got
back in bed. The next thing I knew was
that it was about 6.20am and it really
was time to get up.
One of the first things I did
was, as usual, to check my blood
glucose level. It was 8.4mmol/l. 7.4
would have been a lot better, but 8.4
wasn't too bad. The only problem with
it is that there wasn't any slack at
all for today's eating - a really
stupid idea for the day I do my weekly
shopping ! The rest of me seemed
to feel basically OK - not great, but
not bad either. I may have felt a tiny
bit better after a hot shower, but my
shower was only warm because I reduced
the temperature when we had a spring
day a week or three ago. It was
perfectly comfortable, but now winter
has come around again it would have
been nice if it was a lot hotter.
The shower water only being
warm instead of hot did have one
advantage. I put on my thick winter
coat to go out to Aldi, and if I had
had a very hot shower I would have
ended up feeling sticky or sweaty
under that coat. In a curious way it
was pleasant walking to Aldi. My legs
seemed in fair working order, and I
was neither too hot, or too cool. I
still wish I had not put on so much
weight over winter. The coat did feel
slightly too snug for going shopping,
carrying bags and such, but it would
have been OK for just walking in the
park, or snow, or rain. In fact I do
wonder if it is feeling any more snug
than it was when I first put it om
when winter began. Have I really put
the weight on that I think I have ? I
think some of my trousers say yes even
if the coat doesn't.
This morning I have had far
more breakfast than is probably good
for me. it was made worse by yet
another tedious call from Lee right in
the middle of my breakfast. After
geting off the phone it felt like I
hadn't savoured my breakfast properly,
and wanted something more than I could
savour (and I had something very
savoury !). For someone who says
he used to do pirate radio, and was a
"site engineer", and who describes
himself as an electronics engineer to
unwary suckers, he knows precious
little about tape recorders.
I have some laundry to do
today. It is already soaking in
detergent. Apart from that I have no
idea what I shall be doing today.
Nothing seems to inspire me. I do know
what I am not doing. I am not sitting
in an icy cold pub beer garden at
lunchtime, and I am not sitting in one
in the evening when it was only be
unpleasantly cold. If I feel urge I
bought a 4 pack of Guinness this
morning, but I reckon I'll probably
just keep them for a rainy day or
something.
