The latest
revision to the forecast shows the
last sunshine, in the form of sunny
spells, finishing after 3pm. The
temperature should still reach 16° C.
That should feel warm even without any
sunshine. It looks like it could be a
warm night as well. By 6am tomorrow
morning, the temperature may only have
fallen to 7° C, but it will rise up to
16° C again thanks to much of the day
featuring sunshine or sunny spells.
I was considering going
out for a short walk, perhaps little
more than just one mile, yesterday
morning. The plan was to try some
new/different socks with my walking
boots to see how they felt. I was
reluctant to walk very far because I
didn't want to be tired and sleepy in
the afternoon, although if the socks
had cured the aching feet problem I
may have decided to walk a bit
further.
I never did go out for one
simple reason - even if my logic was
faulty. I was expecting a packet from
Amazon today, but I realised that if
it had arrived at the Dartford depot
at 3am there was a good chance it
would be delivered yesterday. Instead
of going out I waited for the
confirmation that it was to be
delivered yesterday, and then I waited
until there was an estimate of the
delivery time.
The flaw in my logic
My stupid mistake was to be wildly
over optimistic in thinking there was
even a microscopic chance it would
arrive before 1pm. If I just gone
straight out when I was ready I could
have been back before even midday if I
didn't go too far. When the delivery
time estimate finally appeared it said
between 12:45 and 14:00. The delivery
was closer to 14:30, but even that is
miraculously early for an Amazon
delivery.
The delivery was of another 2TB
USB3 external hard disk (also a 4TB
one for future use). I wanted the 2TB
drive to make a backup of the home
partition of my PC (roughly equivalent
to "My Documents" on a Windows PC, but
also including much more). It must
have been around 3pm when I started
that backup, and from then on my
computer turned extremely sluggish.
My guess is that intensive disk
data transfers clogs a data channel in
the CPU, or it's support chip. I am
hoping the 4th generation CPU version
in the new PC I bought recently will
not suffer the same problem. Like when
cloning the hard disk recently, it was
a 10+ hour job. Considering it didn't
finish until about 9am this morning
that makes it more like an 18 hour
wait. Oh well, backups are the most
important thing you can do on a pc -
particularly if you have loads of
photos stored on it that you couldn't
bare to lose. The inconvenience when
it is backing up is microscopic
squared compared to losing thousands
of photos.
Sometime after 3pm Jodie turned
up for our boozing session. She seemed
very slightly drunk after stopping for
a drink at a beer distributor near
Clockhouse where she was also buying
some beer to take away. Most of the
beer we drank were relatively low
alcohol, and so I still felt very
sober at the end. Jodie seemed lightly
pickled. There was still over an hour
of daylight left when she left, and so
she caught the bus to Bromley where
she had another drink in The Star And
Garter. When she phoned me later she
seemed paralytic !
I had tried to eat sensibly
during the day - which was a bold move
considering I would be drinking on a
mostly empty stomach. I almost kept my
dinner simple too. It was well cooked
sausages and tenderstem broccoli in
jelly. When I say jelly I really mean
I added far too much beef gravy
granules to the water the broccili was
cooking in. I don't think I realised
how little water I had put in the pan
that I microwaved them in. That gravy
was super thick ! It was very nice
though !
I had another odd sleep last
night. Mostly I slept OK, but I had
another interlude in the middle where
I seemed to be awake for almost an
hour. In the later hours of the night
I had one of those dreams where the
scenery keeps changing. The first bit
I can remember was getting on a bus on
the other side of London with my
friend Aleemah. It seemed only minutes
before we were going along Hither
Green Lane, and I said if we got off
at the next stop we could walk down
the hill to a pub near home.
We didn't get off the bus
there, and at the end of Hither Green
Lane the bus turned right, and went
along an extraordinary narrow
road that seemed to be cut into
a curving cliff edge. At the end the
bus had to cut across a corner that
left one wheel over the edge before we
were on firm ground. We got off the
bus there, and the sort of
disappeared. There was a big old house
there, and it's very plain pale blue
front doors seemed to have been used
in an ancient episode of Dr Who.
After looking at the doors for
a few seconds, trying to think what Dr
Who episode they had appeared in, I
(we ?) turned around to a completely
different view. It still seemed to be
on top of a very high hill, but the
garden was filled with all sorts of
weird stuff. There was a small car
balanced in a tree hung with bunting.
There was a really weird sculpture
that seemed to have a ladder as part
of it's construction. The only other
thing I remember was a mud bath that
several people were climbing out
looking very happy with themselves. I
think I woke up after that.
Although I had taken some care
with what I ate yesterday, I still had
to face the fact that I had drunk
quite a few beers with potentially a
fair bit of sugar in them. Some of the
fruit beers can be fairly sweet,
although some were definitely sour. It
was a pleasant surprise to see that my
blood glucose had fallen from
10.0mmol/l yesterday morning to
8.8mmol/l this morning. It is now out
of the danger zone, but still too
high, and there is no leeway to take
any chances - which is unfortunate
today.
The first thing I did this
morning, after having a shower, was to
go shopping in Aldi. I seemed to spend
an awful lot this morning. A 4 pack of
Guinness and a bottle of vodka account
for some of the expense, but I
probably spent a fair bit on stuff to
try and cook some low calorie/low
sugar meals. I probably bought too
much meat for this, but who caan
resist a pack of habernero infused
smoked gammon steaks ? I must admit
those gammon steaks were the only
weird thing I bought.
I stocked up on some more
potentially long term stuff like cans
of chunky beef and vegetable soup. I
also bought what was possibly the last
three containers of Imperial Leather
"Cosmic Unicorn" shower gel. I love
the stuff, It has a really clean
smell, but it would seem few share my
enthusiasm. For the last 5 or so
months I have been buying three
containers a week, but I probably only
get through one a week. I think I have
supplies of it for the rest of the
year, and maybe longer !
My right knee seemed to be a
bit stiff and sore when I walked to
Aldi this morning, and my legs were
generally slightly stiff going there
and back. I ought to go for a walk in
the warm sunshine today, but I think I
want to finally get around to doing a
bit more gardening today. I really
ought to cut the grass so I can see
where to try and fill in the bald
spots, but it is going to be tricky.
The fox cubs are making a right mess
off the "lawn". I think they are now
practising their earth excavating at
the moment. Maybe they are enlarging
the earth, but all the stuff they are
kicking out the entrance is ending up
over the lawn. Oh well, in another
month or two they will probably be
weaned, and sent to fend for
themselves in the big wicked world.
