The forecast heavy rain in the
morning never seemed to happen yesterday,
but there was some lighter rain later in the
day, and maybe moderately heavy rain in the
early evening. One surprise was a few short
sunny spells in the late morning, or early
afternoon. They were too brief to add much
warmth, although I could feel the heat of
the sun as it shone on my face indoors. The
outside temperature only rose to about 15°
C.
Both forecasters agree that
today will feature sunshine, but the
latest revisions to both the BBC and Met
Office forecasts have throttled back the
sunshine. Both now show few hours of full
sunshine, and a few hours without even
sunny spells. It should still be nice
after all the dull and rainy days
recently, but the latest revision shows a
maximum of just 14° C, but the BBC is
still holding out for 15° C. The Met
Office show tomorrow to be dull all day
with heavy rain in the evening. The BBC
say tomorrow morning could be sunny,
the afternoon may feature light rain, and
like the Met Office, heavy rain in the
evening. The temperature could be 14 or
15° C.
I seem to be off to a very
late start today, and I am not really sure
why. Too many distractions or something
maybe. Back to yesterday, and it was an
odd sort of day. I felt generally OK, and
I can't recall feeling bored, and yet I
did almost nothing of note all day.
One brief distraction yesterday was
the arrival, in the post, of another poo
test kit. The covering letters were
annoying because the way they were written
was as if i had wanted to start doing
these test, which I note will happen every
two years. I ignored the very first one
that was sent to me, but a few months
later another kit arrived, and with it a
sort of bullying letter. I did the
business and returned it. That seemed to
seal my fate, and I am going to be bullied
into doing this every two years.
Despite few distractions from food,
I tried to moderate what I ate for most of
yesterday. I started the day with my usual
instant noodles, although I will confess
it was a double sized helping again. I had
two Scotch Eggs for lunch. They usually
seem to be safe. Later in the afternoon I
had some rice crackers with cheese on
them. What I didn't have was the dinner
that was cooked, and ready for a quick zap
in the microwave to heat it before serving
it up.
On the whole, that dinner should
have been very safe. It was basically just
semi lean beef with broccoli as a stew. I
did add some curry powder, and I am not
sure if that has any significant sugar in
it. It smelled very nice when it was
cooking, and maybe that is what twisted my
mind, and made me think about getting a
proper curry for dinner. As nice as a
genuine Indian curry would be, I know from
past experience that some dishes, maybe
just from some restaurants, raise my blood
glucose level by unacceptable amounts.
It was while perusing (delivered)
take away options that I saw Vietnamese
listed, and it intrigued me. In fcat it
intrigued me too much, and I ordered 4
different dishes. Each dish seemed
relatively cheap at about £8, but of
course 4 time 8 - £32, and that is rather
extravagant. On the other hand, it was a
learning experience, and sometimes you
have to take a chance to learn about these
things.
If I had one complaint about that
food it was that most of each container
was filled with noodles, and the other
stuff, like any meat, looked almost lost
among it. The rice dish fared a little
better, but not much. I ate all the rice,
but left quite a lot of noodles. I guess I
enjoyed it, but maybe not enough to
outweigh the downsides, and ultimately the
downsides were far more serious than the
meat to noodle ratio.
I washed dinner down with Guinness,
and continued to drink Guinness while
watching some Fleetwood Mac on BBC2.
Both "Fleetwood Mac at The BBC" and
"Fleetwood Mac: Don't Stop" were good
documentaries. Best of all was that
because they were shown on the BBC there
were no interminable adverts being shown
like Sky Arts would have done. They can
really piss me off ! As 10.30pm neared I
had drunk 5 cans of Guinness, and I was
feeling very tired. It was good that there
was a break in the Fleetwood Mac
programmes for, for some stupid reason, a
Jools Holland programme. That seemed to be
my cue to switch off and go to bed.
I may have been barely able to keep
my eyes open in the last 10 or 15 minutes
of TV watching, but as soon as I got in
bed I suffered from insomnia. One problem
was that I had not turned the heater off
early enough, and I felt too hot under the
duvet. On the other hand I felt too cool
without it. I don't know how long it took
to get to sleep. It seemed like it was a
long time, but I suspect it was no more
than 15 minutes, and possibly only 10
minutes.
I think I slept for about 3 hours,
and woke up feeling much too hot. I don't
think it was just the temperature. I would
later learn that my blood glucose was very
high, but it may have also been some
spices in the Vietnamese food that
together with the high blood glucose, left
my pillow damp with sweat. That hasn't
happened for a long time now. Some might
also blame the 5 cans of Guinness, but I
would disagree !
By then my bedroom had cooled
off.....I was going to say a lot, but it
was only a matter of the couple of
degrees. However it crossed that narrow
threshold between cool but comfortable,
and feeling cold. From then on I had to
try and keep most of me under the duvet.
Evidently I did because I seemed to only
have one cold arm from the elbow to the
fingers when I woke up another 3 or so
hours later.
It was only in the last hour or two
of sleep that I had any dreams I can
remember. I dreamed I was back repairing
TVs. In the dream it was as if many years
had passed doing other stuff, and so going
back to repairing TVs was potentially
tricky. Fortunately the first to TVs had
"stock faults", or faults that were the
result of bad design, and appeared so
frequently that they were easy to diagnose
and repair. For the first TV there was
even a repair kit of all the parts I
needed. It felt like I was back in the
saddle again.
I woke up from that dream at about
5.30am. I needed a pee, but it seemed far
too early to get up. I turned the heater
on full, and thought I would just have an
extra 10 minutes in bed......It was almost
8am when I woke up again. I already knew
that my blood glucose readings would be
bad, but they were not quite the disaster
I thought they would be. The worst reading
was just on the threshold of disaster area
at 10.0mmol/l. That was on my oldest
meter. The other two meters both read
9.7mmol/l. That is just as undesirable,
and I need to take care today to try and
eat
very carefully.
The flaw in this plan is that this
afternoon Jodie will be here for another
beer tasting session. The only failsafe is
that after probably getting drunk, I will
definitely be eating the dinner I
originally cooked for last night. Apart
from the unknown qualities of cheap,
supermarket, curry powder, everything else
in it should be very safe. My breakfast
this morning was cheese on rice crackers,
and they are supposed to be safe. The
potential danger time will be at lunch
time. I don't want to drink on an empty
stomach, and so I will have to eat
something, but what ???
