Yesterday started very grey,
but it was a lighter grey in the afternoon.
For some bizzare reason, the BBC revisied
their forecast just before 4pm, and it
declared there would be sunny spells - and
this was 10 minutes before sunset. There
were no sunny spells ! It was just 11° C at
best, yesterday.
There was some weak sunshine
filtering through the clouds earlier, and
even as I write this the sun can be seen
trying to force it's way through the
clouds. It is no wonder that The BBC and
The Met Office have produced very
different forecasts. The BBC say sunny
intervals until 2pm (it was 3pm), and The
met Office have grudgingly added a single
sunny spell at 11am among a sea of white
and grey clouds. Both forecasters agree on
a max of 10° C. Tomorrow may see 12° C,
and there might be some sunny spells
towards the end of the afternoon. Both
today and most of tomorrow should be dry.
There were really just two
notable things yesterday, but somehow it
didn't seem to be a boring day, although
to say it was exciting would be to
exaggerate things. I thought I made a
large eating mistake yesterday, but I seem
to have got away with it.
The first, and main, highlight of
my day was a shopping trip to Tesco. I
spent quite a lot of money there, but my
shop did include two 70cl bottles of
whisky - one on Clubcard offer, and the
other at full price, but it was Tesco's
own brand whisky, and so cheaper than
most. Most of what I bought can be
described as being in two categories -
meat and vegetable for wholesome stews,
and instant noodles. I seemed to buy quite
a lot of the latter.
One, what might be called, luxury
item was frozen oven chips. In fact I
bought two bags, and I suspect the more
exciting one was actually the crappest.
When I got home, after a modestly pleasant
walk there and back, and had stored away
all I had bought, I started on an
extravagant lunch. I had the choice of
thrice cooked, pub style chips, or crinkle
cut chips. It was an irrational choice,
but I went for the thrice cooked chips.
Quite why I though that "pub style"
(or however it was described on the bag)
was any recommendation is beyond me. I was
a bit worried about trying to stuff two
big bags of chips in the freezer, and so I
started cooking a fairly large portion in
the mini oven/grill. Probably about the
maximum I could cook in one go. Once
cooked I started to eat them. They were
very bland except for the bitterness of
guilt over eating such unhealthy things.
I think I was hoping that those
chips would be liken the frozen chips I
bought from Aldi some time ago. Those Aldi
chips were described as pre-cooked in lard
or duck fat (or something like that) and
although they looked identical to
yesterday's chips, they were far, far
superior. Yesterday's chips were just as
you expect cheap pub chips to be cheap and
nasty. Nevertheless, they were nice and
warm on a cold day, and filled a hole
nicely.
After lunch I lay on my bed
reading. I am still finding reading that
2.5" thick book rather challenging, but as
I said yesterday, the further I get
through it, the more balanced it get - I
am now possibly holding a quarter of the
book in my left hand, and three quarters
in my right hand. It still makes my arms
and wrist ache though. At least there is a
progressive increase in the action now. It
was a drudge reading through a lot of the
scene setting pages.
Apart from changing to reading
stuff on the internet now and then, I
didn't really do anything else except
preparing my dinner, and finally eating it
while watching the usual three Star Treks.
Dinner was a simple stew of diced chicken
with pak choi and a bell pepper. It also
had some herbs and spices in it, plus at
the end a light sprinkle of gravy granules
to thicken it up a bit, but not enough to
make a gloopy mess as I am sometimes
guilty of.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was
another mostly tedious storyline, and I
kept flippin over to Star Trek:
Enterprise. That was not the greatest
story, but at least a small bit of it had
T'Pol in her pyjamas with bare belly in
it. It also had Hoshi, the linguist,
appearing topless, but with hands over
boobs for a second or two. Compared to the
rather puritan original series, Enterprise
could occasionally be quite racy.
I marked last night's Star Trek:
Voyager as one of the worst episodes -
EVER ! It probably wasn't, but it was
pretty awful. For want of a better story
the writer rehashed yet another
transporter accident. It was an
interesting idea when it happened in the
original Star Trek, but now it is just a
way of bashing out a half written script
quickly. It was a relief to pour a
very large whisky, and a little later
going to bed.
Something has happened to me, and I
don't know what it is. I can't seem to
fall asleep before midnight now. I
thrashed around in bed for ages and ages,
or so it felt, until after the clock had
struck midnight when I got my first sleep.
Once I had got to sleep I think I slept
better than the previous few nights. I did
wake up several times to re-arrange the
duvet, and similar stuff, but I can't
remember staying awake for more than 5 or
10 minutes afterwards.
It is very often hard to tell
because sometimes I go out of habit
instead of need, but it is possible I peed
less in the night than some times. That
could indicate lower blood glucose, and on
this occasion that was indeed true. The
three readings I got were all quite
different, but still in the good region.
The very lowest was the GlucoRX meter, and
it read a rather magnificent 6.7mmol/l.
The next highest was the Contour meter and
that read 7.3mmol/l. Finally the Sino Care
meter read the highest, but still very
good 7.7mmol/l.
It does seem that I have almost
finished repairing myself after my
injuries from falling down drunk at least
4 times a fortnight ago. I say "almost"
because my tailbone area can still be sore
at times, and another occasional pain pops
up now and then. It is also probably the
result of falling down heavily onto my
bottom. It could be a hernia, of that
footballers favourite "groin strain", but
equally it could be a cancerous prostrate.
Who knows ? The good thing is that it too
does seem to be improving.
One thing I almost forgot in my
rush to slag off Star Trek was to mention
my Amazon delivery. Waiting for it kept me
on high alert all afternoon, but it
actually arrived just after 7pm. It was
two spare Power Over Ethernet adapters,
and my new kitchen tap. It is, for ease of
fitting (probably) very, very similar to
my broken mixer tap, but the finish looks
less cheap and nasty than the crappy one
Lee gave me when he fitted it 5 (?) years
ago before he became a complete alcoholic
at a 5 star level.
I am still not sure if I am going
to get a plumber in to fit it, or to do it
myself. Provided I don't end up with a
leak that I am incapable of fixing, it
seems like it could be an almost easy job.
The big difficulty is that the fixing for
the tap is between the back of the sink
and the back board of the sink support. I
think I have a way to make that less of a
problem. One other difficulty is that I am
not sure if the "service tap" on the hot
water feed completely shuts off the water.
I (or a plumber) may have to do the job
with a trickle of water still coming
through. I have an extra service tap on
order, and it could arrive by or before
Saturday. If that can be fitted very
quickly there should be minimal water
loss.
This morning I dared weigh myself.
I reckon that if I could have had the
second poo I just had, before I had
breakfast, and weighed myself straight
after that poo, I could still claim to
have kept off the 3kg that I had lost
since I saw the nurse a couple of months
ago. Before breakfast, and the second poo,
it would seem that I had put on about
300gm - which is probably within the rises
and falls over a period of time -
hopefully.
There is just one important thing
on the agenda for today, and it is my
regular Wednesday lunchtime drink. I think
I'll be on my own today,a nd so depending
on how the crosswords go, it could mean 2
or 3 pints of Guinness today. I might
possibly walk back from the pub, or I
might get the train so I can do some
trainspotting. What I do know is that I am
very likely to cook another plate of chips
for a late lunch. I got away with it
yesterday, and hopefully I will be able to
again today.
