Yesterday was another day
when the forecasts, including some
early revisions, got it wrong !
The reality was that there was
almost continuous sunshine from
early morning until about midday,
and then some sunny spells after
that. At 4 or 5pm it did finally
rain, and there was one
particularly heavy downfall for a
short while. Despite the nice
sunshine it was still a rather
cool day. I don't think the
temperature went over 8° C.
At the moment there is
full sunshine, and it has been
shining since sunrise. A lot of
the sky is currently blue, and
so it looks like the sunshine
could continue for some time. It
will probably degrade to just
sunny spells as the afternoon
approaches, and like yesterday,
rain will fall in the afternoon.
The latest revision to the
forecast shows heavy rain for
1pm, and then light rain at 2pm.
It may then just be gloomy, but
dry until sunset. Clear skies
overnight meant that this
morning started with a thick
frost, and it seems it may only
rise to 7° C today. Tomorrow
could follow a similar pattern
to today and yesterday - sunny
spells in the morning, and rain
in the afternoon. It may be very
slightly warmer at 8° C.
Yesterday was
one of those days where little
of importance happened, but I
seemed to be very busy to do
anything I thought I would do.
It was also a day where my
eating went a bit strange. In
effect I reversed lunch and
dinner. It had bad and good
results which will be described
in due course.
It
was some time in the middle
of last year that I tried
out a SMARTY sim in a spare
old mobile phone. Their
plans seemed very cheap, and
being a subsidiary of Three,
I assumed I would get the
same good data rates as I
got when I tried Three for a
time. Sadly I found the data
rate was appalling, and so I
didn't buy a third month
from Smarty. They must be
really desperate for
customers because they very
recently sent me the very
tempting offer above - a
whole 60GB of data for just
£10.
I decided not to waste
money on a service I didn't
really need, although because
tethering (maybe connecting a
laptop to the phone for mobile
data) is fully allowed, it would
be a good fall back if my
broadband connection failed. I
spent a bit of time yesterday
buying just a £6 package only
offering 5GB of data, just to
retry it.
As soon as the old phone
had mobile data service it
wanted to download loads of
updates. That was the first clue
that the download speed was
truly awful. I eventually had to
turn on WiFi to get the updates
done quicker. Once everything
calmed down I went to
speedtest.net, and the results
were pretty crap - just
1.44Mbps. That is fast enough
for simple stuff like rail
timetables, and downloading
maps, but otherwise is a bit
primitive in this day and age.
It so happens that I have
another old phone that has a
working Three sim in it. I don't
know how it is still working,
but I once loaded it up with a
lot of credit, and occasionally
make a test call on it. That
seems to keep it active. I used
that to do a speedtest.net using
the Three network, which in
theory is what Smarty uses, and
I got a download speed of just
under 5Mbps. That is still not
terribly fast, but is a lot more
usable than 1.44Mbps. It is
possible it is something to do
with the phone the Smarty sim
card is in, but I don't remember
it being slow when it was my
main phone.
Playing with that phone,
and revived Smarty sim card may
have used an hour of the day.
The rest of the day seemed to be
spent doing odd little jobs like
a bit of washing up, or maybe
preparing lunch. As suggested at
the top of the page, lunch
turned into dinner. I had two
cans of soup, although one was
officially described as Irish
stew. The other was pea and ham
with some added cheesed and
(ready made) crispy fried
onions. Both were moderately low
sugar and low calories.
I'm not sure when it was,
but I thought up, and somehow
got it lodged in my brain, that
I would not have a conventional
dinner, but would have a tub of
ice cream. I've done this once
or twice in the past, and
generally got away with it. The
difference was that in the past
it has been "salted caramel
swirl" ice cream. That has just
82 calories per 100ml, and seems
to have a very low sugar
content.
Sadly, the "double
chocolate brownie" ice cream, by
the same maker (Oppo Brothers)
has a slightly higher calorie
content, but is still mild
compared to more usual ice
creams. Having bought the Double
Chocolate Brownie ice cream,
pictured on the left, I had to
eat it some day - even if I had
read the nutritional information
before hand, which I didn't
yesterday. It has loads of sugar
in it, and I was eating it at a
sensitive time - mid evening.
TV was a bit boring last
night until I started watching a
film documentary about Suzie
Quatro on Sky Arts. It was quite
interesting. I can't say I was
ever a fan of her, but I sort of
liked most of her early singles.
I didn't realise she had done so
much more after her successful
singles. She had hit records all
over the world except, for some
strange reason, in America.
There was a lot of footage
trying to "break" America. I
don't think I ever knew that she
also did a lot of acting work,
and even wrote one play. It was
all interesting enough to keep
me watching until the end at
11pm.
11pm was a bit late for
me to go to bed, and maybe that
was a good thing because I fell
asleep really easily, and slept
easily through the night. One
thing about last night was that
I spent almost the entire night
under the duvet, and it felt
fine. That allowed my to keep
the heater on low, and I only
turned it up high a couple of
hours before I got up. I look
forward to the night when I can
keep the heater off all night,
but with the temperature
dropping low enough for a thick
frost, I most definitely needed
some heat on.
I seemed to have another
very inventive dream last night.
I think it may have been in the
early hours of my sleep, but I
can't be sure because I remember
very little about my sleep apart
from that I can't recall being
troubled to get up for a pee
more than 2 times. The bits of
dream I remember seemed to be
set on something like a small
moon, but still had full gravity
and normal air.
It seemed my job, and
that of a woman colleague who I
fancied (and who may have
actually been a girlfriend) was
something like, but different to
a tax collector. The first bit
of dream I remember was sitting
in something like a sitting
room, and thinking her white,
mid calf length, boots, with
barely 1 inch heels, looked very
sexy, but we had work to do. We
had to go up the hill to takes
some stuff from someone who
lived there.
My colleague didn't want
to go, which was a pity because
I thought we could do some
serious cuddling on the way, and
so I went alone. The stuff I had
to get was iron bars, and they
needed to be distributed to
others. It wasn't anything to do
with socialism, but physics. If
too much weight accumulated in
one spot it would cause the moon
to wobble. It all had to be
evenly distributed to keep every
thing balance.
The odd thing about the
dream was that I was not sure if
I dreamed it all, or later
explained some it too myself
when awake. One thing I later
realised was that the white
boots were influenced by the
documentary about Suzie Quatro I
had seen before going to bed.
The lack of waking to
pee, and maybe less need to
drink in the night, could have
been a good sign of low blood
glucose, but I felt sure that
wasn't the case. It definitely
wasn't ! When I checked the
Contour meter read a truly
terrible 9.8mmol/l. The GlucoRX
meter read only 8.6mmol/l, and
that was strange because the
Sino care meter reading a truly
appalling 10.5mmol/l - well into
the danger zone.
There is nothing for it
but to fast for most of the day
with readings like those. The
big paradox with all this is
that without even having a poo
this morning (so far) I seem to
have lost a little weight. That
paradox is that low calorie does
not equal low sugar (and vice
versa). Most, but not all, of
what I ate yesterday was fairly
low calories. Today, if I can
stick to fresh air until dinner
time, it will be an even lower
calorie day, and in this case,
fresh air also equals low sugar
!
I don't know what to do
today. The continuing sunshine
says I should go out, but the
earlier frost (which still has
not melted when untouched by the
sun) says stay in, turn the
heating up, and relax. Maybe I
am going to do a lot of relaxing
today. The worst thing about it
is like happened yesterday, it
may not rain until much later in
the afternoon, and sunny spells
could continue beyond the
forecast time. It feels like I
missed an opportunity to go out
yesterday, and yet it would have
been no fun when it is so cold,
and that cold can leave a legacy
of aches and pains. Maybe I'll
do the video editing I meant to
do yesterday.
