Yesterday was horrible ! It was very dull,
and very wet. I seemed like it was raining from
the time I got up until the time I went to bed -
and probably beyond that ! To add insult to
injury, it was barely 7° C at it's "warmest".
During the night most of the clouds were
blown away, and this morning has seen the return
to sunshine (even if the sun has just gone in as I
write this). The latest revision of the forecast
now shows sunshine instead of sunny intervals for
a lot of the daylight hours. It is a little
strange to see that with all that sunshine we may
not get that little peak to 10° C at 3pm (as shown
on the chart above), and may only see 9° C this
afternoon. Tomorrow may reach 11° C in the
afternoon after a very cool start. The morning may
see a few sunny spells, but most of tomorrow is
currently predicted to be overcast to one degree
or another. It should be another dry day.
I felt terrible yesterday - all aches and
pains. It was very 'flu-like in the morning, and
only got better in the afternoon when I slowly
anaesthetised myself with copious amounts of
whisky. It was a continuation of how I felt the
day before yesterday, and what must have been a
fever on Tuesday afternoon. On that Tuesday
afternoon I was too busy trying to get warm to
stop and take my temperature. That was a shame
because it would have been proof that I really was
fighting off a bug.
Yesterday I didn't even get up properly. I
didn't wash, and wore the same underpants I had
been wearing the day before under a pair of
"lounge pants" - similar to, but different to
pyjama bottoms. In that state I didn't leave the
house once, and so the only picture I got of the
incessant rain was the screengrab of my old Cat
Cam. It is still working despite sitting on the
windowsill of the back room, in all weathers for
the last 10+ years. It has needed a bit of
maintenance to keep it going, but mostly it just
needs an occasional spray of WD40 to deflect some
of the rain and damp. The instruction manual makes
a bit point how it should not be used outdoors !
It is not the finest of pictures, but you can see
the puddles on the path, and the general greyness
of the day.
I have a strong temptation to wonder if
what I continue to suffer from, despite it seeming
to be on the wane at the moment, is a mild form of
the now famous Coronavirus (Corvid-19). Although
for quite a few it has proved deadly, there are
now many reports that for many people it can be
quite a mild illness. The important thing that
seems to determine how it affects people is what
pre-existing health problems they may have. Since
pausing smoking (for the next 15 years) I have had
far fewer respiratory problems. In fact for the
last 6 years it has been quite a novelty for a
cold to be just a cold without suffering from
probable pneumonia at the same time. If indeed I
do have a mild Corvid-19 infection, then it is
shame I will have no official record of it. I
still might invest in a "I survived the
Coronavirus" t-shirt if I see any.
I keep hearing reports that such is the
panic about Coronavirus that shops have sold out
of alcohol based hand sanitizer, and that bottles
like those above are being sold for silly money on
Flea-bay. There is some dispute about how
effective these alcohol based hand cleaners are.
They will kill most bacteria, but Coronavirus is a
(as the name implies) a virus, and they are much
more hardy. Apparently it is a bit of both. This
virus has a coating that is damaged by alcohol,
and that reduces, but may not fully stop, it's
chances of being infectious.
Anyway, I'm alright. The bottles in the
picture above are from my collection, and after
taking the picture I discovered another two
bottles. In this panic I am sitting on gold ! I
acquired so many because I felt they may have been
handy when I used to go on my long seaside or
country rambles, and was often far from any
washing facilities. I just used to grab a bottle
or two when shopping in the 99p, or Pound shop,
and throw them in my rucksack before going out for
a long ramble. I rarely used them.
Maybe there is some sort of proof that
alcohol kills this virus. Yesterday afternoon, as
a distraction from aching, and feeling miserable,
I indulged in enough whisky to get thoroughly
drunk. I did end up with an unpleasant hangover in
the evening, but I slept OK, and this morning I
feel far better. As I sit here typing I am
thinking that there have been plenty of mornings
when I have felt worse. However, I did go down to
the kitchen a little while ago, and my knees still
felt rather stiff and ached a bit while going down
stairs. Now I think of it, I don't think I can
remember them complaining when I came back up the
stairs.
My plans for today will be tempered by how
I feel hour by hour. I fully intend to go out and
get some sun on my face today, and so despite some
concern that I may be spreading a nasty disease if
I really have it (which is actually unlikely if I
am mostly over it in 3 or 4 days), I may as well
aim to get to the pub for 1pm, and hope that
Angela will also be able to get there too.
While feeling rotten, or very drunk, my
eating got a bit out of control yesterday,
although the only bad thing I ate was a tub of low
calorie ice cream (it is also reduced, but far
from zero sugar). It was delicious ! One of my
intentions today is try to be very careful about
what I eat, and how much of anything that I do
eat. As I say, that is my intention, but it could
be modified by many things - too many aches
resurfacing for instance. I was considering a gig
tonight. Jason And The Lagernauts are playing in
The Maxwell Tavern. The pub is a few minutes walk
from Orpington station, and Monday to Friday that
is served directly from Catford station. I feel is
it very unlikely that I will feel I have the
energy or enthusiasm for it tonight, but you never
know.
