There was no
mist around these parts this morning, but
the rest of the forecast is probably about
right. The latest revision to the
forecast say the whole day will be
overcast. Overcast on the Met Office means
that the sky will be 100% grey. Apparently
100% light coloured cloud is not
overcast. Fancy getting to this stage in
your life and discovering that until now
you had been wrong ! Today is one of those
days when the warmest part of the day is
in the morning, and it gets colder after
that. I don't think I could dispute that
it was about 9° C a bit earlier, and from
now until almost midnight, the temperature
will be a flat 8° C. There is a small, but
unlikely chance of a shower at any time
today. Tomorrow will be various shades of
grey all day, but it will be warmer - just
about. The last 4 or 5 hours of the day
will see the temperature climb to 10° C.
There is also a 50% chance of rain after
sunset.
I don't know whether to
describe yesterday as worse or better than
the day before. I did predict that I would
have another inactive day when I was
writing yesterday morning. That was
basically right, but it was one of those
days when I did lots of very small, and
easy jobs. Of course many of them did not
exactly need any hard work, or even any
work at all when considered from some
perspectives.
I can't really describe exactly
what I did because many things were too
insignificant by themselves to bother
remembering, and yet they
would/could/should add up something
useful. Very often they were little odd
things like spotting something and
thinking along the lines "that would look
better somewhere else". In some cases
"somewhere else" was the rubbish bin.
There are many things I own that are
useless, and yet it takes a certain state
of mind to finally toss them in the bin.
Another little thing I did was to
research, for the umpteenth time, the
chronology of the Stainless Steel Rat
series of books. Not the order they were
written, but in the order of the Stainless
Steel Rat's own timeline.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stainless_Steel_Rat#Books
I then, in a completely nerdy way, stuck
number stickers on the 11 books so that in
future (and also the present) I can
re-read them in the correct order. Of
course each book is complete in itself,
but each book does contain references to
earlier books, and it is satisfying to
know about that reference.
I think that I am liable to do
something similar to a few other series of
books - notably those of Isaac Asimov, and
Robert Hienlien. Both have written books
that have their place in a fictional
future. Those of Isaac Asimov do get a bot
complicated though because some of his
books have parallel timelines, or even
worse span a long time line that covers
the same time as several other books. In
one of his books there is an appendix (If
I recall correctly) with a suggested
reading order for his books. Maybe one of
today's jobs is to find that book with
it's handy appendix.
Once again, one of the most easily
describable jobs from yesterday was the
preparation, cooking, and, I suppose, the
eating of my dinner. Yesterday featured a
very simple, and on the whole, healthy
sort of dinner. It was nothing more than
roast, seasoned, chicken thighs with
sprouts part steamed in some chicken
stock. Cutting off the manky bits of the
sprouts was the longest job ! It was a
nice dinner that I enjoyed. I also enjoyed
having half a dozen ginger biscuits as a
dessert.
Being a Saturday there was no Star
Trek to watch on TV last night, but Sky
Arts, who seemed to have dialled down the
bloody annoying, very intrusive ad breaks
a bit last night, were showing some music
based stuff. I watched most of a
documentary about Joe Cocker. It was a bit
interesting, and while I wouldn't question
his technical ability as a sineger and
performer, I still find I prefer him in
very small doses. One song on the radio
for a whole day seems quite sufficient for
my ears.
That documentary was followed by a
recording of a Dire Straits concert. Dire
Straits have recorded a few really
excellent songs, but sadly also lots of
dross. Not actually bad stuff, but stuff
that fails to arouse any positive emotion.
Once again, many of their songs make good
filler material for a radio programme. I
didn't fancy watching the concert, but the
music was inoffensive to leave on while
reading a book. Over the space of 90
minutes I think I was only aware of about
two songs, and because they were performed
live, and sounded different, or longer
than the recorded versions, my interest
seemed to fade away from the song, and
back to the book.
I was potentially interested in the
next programme - a documentary (or concert
?) about Eric Clapton. It started at 9pm,
but I decided my sleep was more important.
I don't think I was asleep until about
10pm, but once asleep I seemed to sleep
well. My dreams seemed to feature
railways, although the details are now too
blurry to describe. There was also
something that I thought I ought to try
and remember so I could describe it, but
that has all but vanished now. the only
thing I remember was that there was
something I wanted to remember !
I definitely feel creaky again this
morning, but at least I started the day in
a good way... good ? .... I think there is
a different word I am looking for. Anyway,
one of the first things I did was to trim
my beard. As I did so I came to the
conclusion I should put on the next size
shield to leave my whiskers a bit longer
the next time I trim my beard. I think it
should probably be a slightly thicker
beard in the cold days of winter. After
trimming my beard I had a shower.
I was ready just in time to make it
to the Polish/Turkish/East
European/Greek/Foreign supermarket on
Catford Bridge by 9am. It was as expected.
or hoped for, almost empty when I got
there. I had hoped to buy a couple of
bottles of Diet Coke, but they seemed to
have run out of that (again). I bought a
bottle of Pepsi Max and a bottle of R
Whites Lemonade instead. I will have to be
careful with the latter because it does
contain sugar, although not a huge amount.
As well as drink I bought some
healthy stuff, like fruit, and some
unhealthy stuff like alleged Mexican
flavour cream cheese, and some greasy
salami. I also bought more packets of "2
for 99p" soup mix. That stuff needs a bit
of preparation, but there are some
interesting flavours. The red lentil and
rice I had yesterday, or the day before,
was quite tasty. There was other stuff,
like weird cheese, that I was tempted to
buy, but some of their imported stuff is
very expensive...or seems to be.
The walk there and back was not too
bad, and maybe as I was approaching home
again I was starting to feel a bit less
creaky. It did make me wonder if I ought
to force myself out for a walk today.
Maybe I will, and maybe I won't. It is
terribly hard to motivate myself under
this cold grey sky. Maybe one motivation
ought to be that I have just eaten a 50%
very unhealthy breakfast. The rice
crackers were innocent except for their
barbecue flavour completely overpowering
the (alleged) Mexican flavour of the
terribly unhealthy cream cheese, and
almost overpowering the flavour of the
very unhealthy salami.
At least all these unhealthy things
only had too much grease, and will
probably help fur up my arteries again,
but their sugar content should be very
low. If I am careful I may be able to keep
my blood glucose level down again when I
check it tomorrow. This morning it was a
nice 7.7mmol/l. A couple of days of it
being under 7 would be good because that
could almost get my end of month average
down to my self set target of 7.5mmo/l. I
think it will actually be closer to
8mmol/l. That will be good enough, but
nothing to be proud of.
I didn't drink any beer yesterday,
although I did have a couple of whiskies
before bed time. These three beers were
the beers I drunk on Friday night. I
forgot to post this picture yesterday. I
also forgot to mention I have ordered more
beer to be delivered. This time I am
trying out Jodie's recommended beer seller
- Beer Merchants (dot com). They have
accepted my order, and I think they have
taken my money, but as yet have not said
when they will be despatched, or when I
can accept them. I hope they may arrive
for this coming Thursday's "bubble
support" session.
