Yesterday was almost typical of recent
days. There was a sunny morning followed by a very
dull afternoon. As far as I can recall it was a
dry day, and I can definitely recall it was a cold
day. The highest temperature was in the morning,
and it was just 6° C. By the afternoon, and for
much of the day it was just 5° C, and then in the
evening it fell to 4° C - and continued to fall
through the night.
The latest
revision to the forecast is not too
different to the very early version in the
screenshot above. By my reckoning it was
colder than 2° C this morning. My
thermometer was saying just 1.2° C at
about 9am. It was fairly sunny earlier,
but now it is looking too cloudy for any
significant sunny spells, and I am
wondering if, as per the latest revision
to the forecast, 2 and 3pm will feature
full non stop sunshine. The day started
off very cold, and it will end very cold,
the middle will also be very cold, but not
quite as cold as the ends of the day. By
2pm it may peak at a whole 5° C. Tomorrow
could start at 3° C, but end at 10° C
thanks to some strong winds blowing in
from somewhere a bit warmer. That warmer
air will be humid too, and so tomorrow
could be mostly overcast, and when it is
not overcast it will just be bloody
cloudy, although the current prediction
gives no more than a 10% chance of rain.
Yesterday morning was a very
quiet morning. I hardly did anything until
early afternoon when I prepared the dining
room for another drinking session. It was
to be quite a boozy session that featured
beer ranging in strength from 6.6% to 12%
! The curious thing was that I didn't seem
to feel that drunk at the end. That was
probably because Jodie and I had half of
each bottle, and so we drunk less than it
looks.
We actually left two bottles
for another day, but we did drink the
contents of two cans of srong beer than
Jodie brought with her. I am surprised she
brought extra because she knew there was
already a fair selection here - which
included 4 bottles of the Gordons Xmas
beer (the bottle in the middle of the
picture). The main reason we didn't drink
more was time rather than anything else.
The "bar" usually closes at 6pm because
that is when I like to have dinner
(although Jodie always manages to keep
drinking until at least 6.30pm.
At 5.30pm I took a short break from
drinking to order an Indian takeaway -
rather a big Indian takeaway ! It
was my intention to order enough for
dinner last night, dinner tonight, and
probably dinner tomorrow night. The latter
depends on how greedy I feel, but I
probably ordered enough for snacks as
well. I was lucky to fine an Indian
restaurant that scored a full 5 on "scores
on the door", and was offering a 30%
discount on orders over £30. My order,
after that 30% discount still came to £37
(if I recall correctly).
I thought that what I had last
night was rather delicious, and it went so
well after the booze. After eating I
watched one old episode of QI on Dave, and
then I seemed to feel tired enough to go
to bed fairly early. I was almost asleep
before 9pm, and like the last few nights,
I slept quite well, but I did get up early
this morning. Maybe the early night, and
getting up early was all part of a master
plan. Well it was, sort of, but it was
more a case of what I desired rather than
what I thought I would get.
At 7am this
morning, while it was just 1.5° C,
and still dark, I set out for a
walk in the park. A quiet Xmas
morning seemed like the perfect
time to walk through the park in
the dark. It wasn't truly dark
because the main path is lit by
frequent lamp posts. The Vineries
has no lighting, and neither has
the little mud path alongside the
river. I didn't go to either
place, but I did walk through the
field with no proper path, and
also no lighting, but by then it
was getting quite light to the
east. That will be shown in
another video I might show
tomorrow. The video, to the right
of the map, assuming your browser
can play it, was an off the cuff
piece direct to the camera in my
phone. I should have done it in
landscape mode so I could edit
together with other video I shot,
but it stands on it's own in
portrait mode.
As I mentioned in the video, I was
wearing my thick orange winter coat. This
year, only after losing a bit of weight,
was the first time I have actually worn it
since buying it 3 to 5 years ago. Maybe I
have put on less weight than I thought I
had since Autumn started, and winter
quickly followed, because I found the coat
to be quite comfortable, and I had it done
up for the entire walk (although I did put
the hood down when I started to feel
really hot in it).
I wasn't sure I would want to do
just a basic 3 mile walk when I started
out. I thought my right knee would get too
stiff and sore in the cold, and that I
would be slowly cooked inside that very
warm coat. However, once I had walked 1.2
miles I began to feel like I could push
myself further, and I ended up walking as
far as Lower Sydenham station where, as
the sign says, there would be no trains
until the 27th of December.
I was rather disappointed that I
couldn't find a bus stop "Countdown"
display saying there were no buses on Xmas
day. This one, on Catford Bridge, was the
only working display I saw on my whole
walk, and I get the impression many bus
stops have lost their displays. It make me
wonder if the "Countdown" system has now
been discontinued. It would be a shame if
it was because it used to be quite useful
in the days when I could use buses
(because no masks needed).
The final thing I did on my walk
was to pop into the little supermarket on
Catford Bridge to specifically buy some
fruit, and then anything else that
captured my fancy. If I had brought a
strong bag, or preferably a rucksack, I
might have bought some silly strength
Polish beers. The worst thing I did buy
was a large packet of tomato flavour
crisps. That bag had untold calories in
it, and probably loads of sugar, and
I ate the whole bag for breakfast !
Provided I eat nothing for the rest
of the day, which obviously I will not be
doing, I will have got away with it after
that walk. At least my day started off
with my blood glucose down to a very nice
7.2mmol/l. I have no idea how it could be
that low after all that strong beer, and
the Indian dinner, but the meter doesn't
lie...or not that much.
Some vague plans are coming
together for the rest of today. Almost
definite is that I shall soon have a short
(or long) snooze. Then I have further
video taken on my walk to edit together.
After that I had a really crazy idea that
I might go for another walk. If I do, and
it is a big if, it will probably be a much
shorter walk, hopefully in sunshine, and
maybe as little as just Ladywell and back
through Ladywell Fields.
