The latest
revision to the forecast says it is cloudy
right now, but the reality is that the sun
is still shining as it has done since
sunrise. It is true that the sky is no
longer pure blue, but is laced with thin
whispy clouds. At the moment they are thick
enough to occasionally make the sun
slightly hazy, but maybe they will thicken
up enough to block the sun later. The
latest revision to the forecast does admit
that there should still be sunny spells
from midday for an hour or two. The other
feature that is not normally shown without
clicking in "show more" is the wind speed.
The wind seemed quite strong last night,
and during the heavier rain it sounded
like gravel being thrown at the window.
The wind is still a bit gusty this
morning, and it is the wind that has blown
in the clearer skies, and lower
temperatures. Today should see the
temperature hit 8° C, but tomorrow is
going to be a fair bit colder - and it may
well be far sunnier !
While I try and remember if
anything happened yesterday that is worth
writing about, it is time to go back to
some older pictures from the day before
yesterday.
I bought these sugar free sweets
from Aldi on Monday morning, but I only
open the first on Tuesday. I haven't
bought any for a long time despite liking
some of the flavours a lot. I'm not quite
sure why I didn't buy the occasional
packet from time to time over the last few
years. Anyway, the Rhubarb & Custard
was a new flavour, and had to be tried. I
popped two of the lozenges in my mouth,
and within second the tart, but delicious
flavour had my saliva glands almost
spraying the inside of my mouth. Seconds
after that I was choking on my own spit,
and coughing like a terminal Covid case
for a few seconds.
As I mentioned yesterday, on my way
back from my walk on Tuesday I observed
that filming had been taking place (and
maybe still is taking place)) in Catford.
The first very obvious thing was these two
phone boxes outside the front entrance of
The Black Cat pub. They were not working,
and just standing on the pavement. They
were obviously film props.
My first source of very limited
information was this man outside The Black
Cat. I had noticed the door was open, and
so I had a look through the window.
Initially I wondered if the place was
being refurbished, or even stripped out
prior to permanent closing, but the man
told me it was being used as a temporary
base and store for the film crew. For some
reason I seem to think that they may have
done some filming in there too.
It is not a public right of way,
and so many don't realise that there is a
road network above the shops for
deliveries to the shops. Parked up on the
roadway was a red double decker bus. I
think I have seen a catering bus like this
used on other film sets, and so may not
have been there to appear in whatever was
being filmed.
One of the things I wanted to do
while I extended my walk after walking in
the park, was to take a few pictures for
Patricia to show how Catford looked during
this tier 5 lockdown. I must admit I was
surprised at how quiet it was on an early
Tuesday afternoon. This is the view from
the traffic island at the bottom of
Brownhill Road looking towards Lewisham.
This is the view looking the other
way. There are a few more people in the
shot, but not many, and even the road
looks very quiet.
The window shutters were down on
Argus, but the door shutter was only
partly down. I am not sure if this store
was closed or not. I once though it had
actually closed down completely sometime
last year - possibly at a similar time to
Boots next door - the shop with no logo.
The shop between where boots was, and
Peacocks had closed quite some time ago.
Peacocks was closed because new underwear
is not considered essential in the
pandemic according to the government.
Amongst other stuff Poundland sells
food, and so are allowed to open. It was
possibly the busiest shop along the high
street, and I saw a few people go in and
out in the few minutes I was there.
Now I have caught up with the photo
backlog I have to think what I did
yesterday. The superficial answer is I
remember doing very little. One of the
early things I did was to finish hand
washing the big bath towel I had started
the day before. It needed two more rinses
until the water was getting clear of soap
bubbles. With one last heroic effort I did
the fabric conditioning, wrung it out one
last time, and hung it up to dry.
The only other bit of housework I
did was far easier. It was to take out the
rubbish, and the waste food (peeling and
stuff), because today, and in fact this
morning, it was waste collection day. I
must admit it did make the kitchen smell a
lot sweeter after getting that little job
done. I also did some washing up, and
wiped a work surface down.
Apart from that, I did nothing but
relax and read...well, there were a few
other very minor things like digging out a
selfie stick, and trying it out again.
That was the result of checking some
videos I had decanted off my phone to free
up some space on it. Some of those videos
featured some stuff where I talked
into the camera. I concluded that my
phones "selfie camera" can only take a
close up of my face when held at arms
length, but a wider shot would look a lot
better. I can do that with the "selfie
stick", and I shall probably embarrass
myself with it next time I am walking in a
more secluded part of the park.
The thing I did most of yesterday
was waiting....waiting for my Amazon
delivery. I erroneously thought the
deliver could come early afternoon, but I
think it was almost 6pm before my bottles
of Irish whiskey arrived. That was a long
wait, and a long time to have to stay
alert. I really would have liked an
afternoon snooze, but I didn't dare. I
passed the time with almost non stop
reading - probably half and half book and
internet.
I didn't even break for long to
make my dinner. I had precooked most of it
the previous day, but I did cook, and came
very close to burning, some bacon to go
with the second portion of liver. I also
added a small can of marrowfat peas to
bulk up the liver a bit, but obviously
that only took seconds. It turned out to
be a nice dinner, but I thought it needed
a grand finale. I treated myself to a tub
of low calorie/sugar ice cream.
Before going to bed I treated
myself to a couple of large whiskeys from
my newly delivered booze. That seemed to
make me feel very hot, although on
reflection it was more likely the
Caribbean hot pepper sauce I had on the
liver and bacon doing it's stuff. At that
time it was still 10° C outside, and I
decided to turn all the heating off. At
first it made my sleep far more
comfortable...or did it ?
Initially I went to sleep partly
uncovered. I woke up a couple of hours
later feeling rather cold, and so I
covered myself up. The next time I woke up
I felt fine, but In think it was around
5am when I woke up feeling very cold. Not
actually shivery, but not far from it
after going out to the cold toilet. I
turned the heater on full in my bedroom
when I came back from the toilet. It
didn't feel like the room had warmed up
much when I go up around 7am.
Apart from feeling a bit cool, I
didn't feel too bad this morning. The fly
in the ointment was that my blood glucose
was up high again, and the worrying thing
is that I can't think of a good reason for
it. Maybe the low calorie ice cream was
not so low sugar after all. It was a
flavour that only seemed to appear in Aldi
once - cookie dough ice cream. Maybe it is
only the other flavours that are low
sugar. Maybe I ate something I have
forgotten about that raised my blood
glucose, but I can't think what it might
have been.
I have already done two important
things today. I have had a good shower,
and I have been to the little supermarket
on Catford bridge. I was particularly
after some Diet Coke, but I bought other
stuff too. I bought another loaf of their
unsliced Turkish bread. Maybe that was not
a good idea when my blood glucose is high,
but on the other hand I have experienced
my blood glucose going down after eating
that bread. Maybe it is good for giving me
a full feeling without having to actually
eat much.
I also bought some beer. There was
a stack of boxes in front of where the
Polish beers were, and so I couldn't check
to see how their stock levels were doing,
but I wasn't after Polish beer today. I
was after something that seemed new to me,
and hopefully new for Jodie. I might have
found it in the form of some rather
expensive beer from the Flying Dog Brewery
in America. The main feature of today will
be another Thursday afternoon boozing
session with Jodie where these beers will
be tried.
