The
latest revision to the forecast has put
back the first sunny spell to 9am, but
there is still some big clouds in the
sky, although I can see some blue. It's
just that the blue areas are nowhere
near where the sun is. To make matters
worse, the latest revision to the
forecast shows the sunshine fizzling out
with only sunny spells at 2pm, and
nothing after but cloudy skies with the
possibility of a shower at 9pm. The
temperature is still shown as rising to
10° C this afternoon. Tomorrow's
forecast is a real mixed bag. The
temperature will briefly rise in the
late morning, but towards the end of the
afternoon it will start to fall until it
almost hits freezing point by midnight.
During the course of the day there could
be mist, fog, drizzle, light rain,
medium rain, heavy rain, and just before
midnight, sleet ! Sunday, the day after
tomorrow is the start of maybe almost a
week featuring at least one fall of
snow. The current prediction is that
snow will fall all day on Sunday !
I guess I should describe yesterday
as an exciting day, although it didn't get
off to a good start. I felt quite lazy
during what was left of yesterday morning
after writing up my diary here (it seems
to take longer and longer these days).
Before doing anything else I decided I
would read a few pages from the current
book I am reading. It was literally after
a couple of pages that I felt my eyelids
drooping.
I gave in to those drooping
eyelids, and ended up snoozing for an
unknown amount of time, but perhaps around
30 minutes. I woke up feeling cold and
stiff. It makes me wonder if it was for a
fair bit more than 30 minutes of snoozing.
I felt pretty awful, and thought the
quickest way out of it was to have
something hot to eat. Initially it was to
be a pouch of chick pea curry (another
experimental purchase from Aldi), but when
put onto a plate it looked so small that I
also made up some instant noodles.
I don't know if I liked that chick
pea curry. I would definitely class it as
a side dish because of it's size. It's
texture was nice, but the curry flavour
seemed to be that cheap curry flavour you
get from a cheap bottle of curry powder. I
have one more of those pouches, and so I
have to give it a second go, but I doubt I
will buy any more. That is a shame because
it should have the potential to be nice -
as is chana massala from any half decent
Indian restaurant.
After that chick pea curry, and the
lobster flavour instant noodles, I felt a
lot warmer. In fact the hot pepper sauce I
had with the noodles brought me out in a
light sweat for a while ! Although I no
longer felt cold, and the stiffness had
gone, I still didn't feel all that good.
It is hard to explain why. Maybe the
spices had given me a bit of heart burn,
and maybe I had a bit of a stomach ache
too. The latter was possibly true as I
would find out this morning.
Eventually it was time to start the
Thursday afternoon boozing session. One of
the beers we tried was Quilmes. I used to
buy this from an Argentinian importer who
was in the same building when I worked in
the "Business Village" in Wandsworth, but
that was at least 10 years ago. Initially
it was a treat for Patricia, who comes
from Argentina, but sadly was not a beer
drinker. I quite liked it though.
The "exciting" thing about this
bottle, that came in a case of mixed world
beers, was that the label had changed. The
new label was more of interest to Jodie
who collects beer labels. For me the best
thing was that it was still a very nice
beer. It is basically a lager, but it
seems to have quite a malty taste. I'd
guess it is also slightly sweet tasting -
which is nice, but can have a bad effect
on my blood glucose level.
I don't know how many different
beers were tried, but the total amount
of beer I drank was probably no more
than three pints, but who can tell ?
Some of the beers I considered to be
nasty. There seems to be a hopefully
passing fad of making very sour beers
with added sour fruit flavours. That are
not to my taste, but Jodie seems to like
them a lot. I preferred some of the more
traditional types of beer.
As has became traditional now,
the boozing session ended with a shot
glass of spirit. This time it was from
the other bottle of Aquavit I had
ordered - the one that was 45% proof. I
think I might prefer the other one I
had. This one has more flavour, but
seems very dry.
During the drinking session I had
two deliveries from Amazon. One was
expected. It was the one I mentioned
yesterday that Amazon said would be
delivered "before 10pm" !! In fact
yesterday I saw a new thing where the
estimated delivery time was reduced to
about a 3 hour slot from 1.30pm. It
arrived at about 4.30pm. It was nothing
to get excited about - just cod liver
oil capsules.
It wasn't long after that when I
had another delivery. I have no idea who
the courier company were, and I had only
the very vaguest of an idea that it
might arrive yesterday. It was the
second crate of beer I ordered. It was a
selection of mostly strong Belgium
classic beer - some brewed in
monasteries. I don't think there was
anything "new and exciting" in there for
Jodie, but she did agree that they are
good beers. It was the sort of beers we
were drinking when she first introduced
me to novel "continental" beers, and we
had to get them by visiting specialist
beer shops around London. Some of them
are for next week.
I may not have drunk that much in
terms of quantity yesterday afternoon,
but some of the beers were fairly
strong, and I did have a little more
spirits than just one shot glass of
Aquavit. I felt slightly drunk, but
worse still, rabidly hungry. The roast
chicken thighs didn't seem to satisfy,
and so I resorted to a couple of pot
noodles. By 8pm I was feeling very
rough, and very tired. I don't know
exactly when it was, but probably around
8.30pm I was in bed feeling horrible,
and wondering if I would ever be
comfortable enough to go to sleep. I had
barely put the full stop on the end of
that thought before I fell into a deep
sleep.
It must have been around midnight
when I woke up with a bad hangover.
Primarily I needed a wee, but my stomach
seemed to be quite active. I had fears
that it would explode out of one end or
the other, but before that happened I
fell asleep again. I woke up a few times
more after that, and slowly I began to
feel better. It was a struggle trying to
keep sleeping until 7am, but I only
failed by about 15 minutes. First I had
a wee, and then I had a poo, and then a
ew minutes later I had another.
Since then I have felt tolerably
OK. One good thing this morning is my
blood glucose level. It is only good in
that it hasn't gone through the roof
like I expected. It was 8.7mmol/l, and
that is just about acceptable provided I
take care today. Taking care, or
de-toxifying, and some will have it,
should be the pattern for today. I don't
know how carefully I can follow the
correct path - that will only be known
in hindsight. It is highly likely I'll
stay off the booze because that is
generally easy, but the temptations of
food can be difficult to fight. It is
probably handy that I don't have too
many "naughty" foodstuffs here at the
moment...although I do have some big
baking potatoes. Many say they are low
calories, but they have huge stores of
sugar, and it is the sugar I want to
avoid most.
The sun has finally come out now,
and potentially it could stay out for
several hours yet. I don't feel ready
for it right now, but I hope I'll feel
like going for a walk in the park before
we lose the sunshine. I doubt I would
want to do more than my standard 3 mile
walk in the park, but there could be
some variation because I don't fancy
going through the waterlogged field, or
even along the extremely muddy path by
the river today. I'll probably stick to
the main path, and that might shorten my
walk - assuming I actually go out and do
it. I think my head is still a bit thick
with hangover at the moment.
