This morning
my thermometer agreed with the
forecast - it was just 9° C at 7am. I
wonder if it was even colder in the
early hours of the morning. Today is
forecast to be quite a cool day. The
latest revision to the forecast
grudgingly says that for one single
hour this afternoon the temperature
could reach 15° C, but most of the
afternoon will be just 14° C. The
latest revision has also cut back on
the amount of sunshine predicted for
today. It is brilliant sunshine now,
and has been since sunrise, but the
latest revision says it is about to
end, and that only sunny spells will
resume at 4pm. There might even be a
shower at 2pm. This is all an
improvement on yesterday, but not as
good as forecast yesterday. Tomorrow
may be a degree or two warmer than
today, but only a grey day, with the
odd chance of an occasional shower, is
predicted.
I guess yesterday revolved
around my beer delivery from Beer
Merchants. I was very surprised that
it was going to be delivered just 2
days after ordering it, and I was even
more surprised when it arrived at
about midday. The last estimated time
for arrival was between 12.33 and
13.33. It was by luck than judgement
that I had ordered 24 beers, and that
fitted in their standard 24 beer
cardboard boxes. They even included a
free glass. It had "Saison Dupont" on
it in a plain font. That wasn't
exciting, but it was a very handy
size. Being European in origin, it was
stamped 33cl - just right for smaller
cans of beer.
It would be easy to say that I
should have known what I ordered, but
I didn't really. I just scrolled
through the lists on their web site,
and ticked anything that looked
interesting. I had not realised I had
ordered two different beers from
Delerium. They are very strong fruit
flavoured beers, and rather delicious.
I sent a picture to Jodie of 6 of the
beers I hoped she would be interested
in.
She confirmed that she had not
had any of these, apart from the
Kasteel Rouge, which apparently she
had a lot of last year, since she had
been logging all her beers on the
untappd website. It is possible that
some of the others she might not have
had for some years.
I think it was getting on for
3pm when I woke up after a snooze
feeling very cold - probably because
it was cold, but maybe not. At that
time I had not eaten anything more
substantial than a handful of peanuts.
I hadn't really intended to fast like
that, although it wasn't a bad idea
after my morning blood glucose
measurement was rather high. I decided
that what I wanted was some hot soup,
and that is what I had.
My soup experience was
different to usual. The first soup as
an Aldi own brand pea and ham. It was
different, and possibly in a better
way to all the previous cans of the
same product that I have eaten.
Yesterday's was like it hadn't been
cooked enough. The peas were not mushy
as usual, but had some "bite" left in
them. It was a shock, but I think I
liked it. The other soup was a carton
of Heinz chicken, rosemary and
parsnip. It was a reasonably OK taste,
but the consistency was like gruel (or
very thin porridge). I couldn't help
thinking it was like something to feed
invalids or babies. That spoiled it
for me. There was also the slight
problem that being made by Heinz it's
sugar content was a bit higher than
most of the soups I choose. I bought
that carton, plus a spare I still have
to eat, from Aldi a couple of years
ago, but it is still "in date".
While having my soup I watched
two more episodes of series 3 of
Blake's Seven. Series 3 was the weird
season that featured weird paranormal
stuff instead of SciFi. I suppose it
made for a change to shooting matches
between the seven and the federation
troops, but I just felt it didn't
really fit. While watching it I also
had a couple of cans of beer. I had
bought them from Tesco, and Jodie
wasn't interested. I can't recall her
saying they were "minging", but they
were. They were cloudy and very tart.
They appeared to give me
a stomach ache, but that could have
been triggered by the hot soup
increasing the fermentation rate of
whatever diabolical chemistry was
going on in my gut. I didn't realise
it at first, but the discomfort was
trapped wind. Once it started to
become untrapped I would be surprised
if the local neighbourhood didn't know
it too. For the rest of the evening,
and into the night, I was producing
weapons grade farts that no visit to
the toilet could cure (until this
morning - I hope).
The odd thing is that even
though my stomach was not feeling
good, I still wanted some dinner. I
had it a bit later than usual, maybe
almost 7pm instead of 6pm. I wanted
something very nice, but at the same
time something that might be OK for my
blood glucose. I opted for a couple of
lamb leg steaks. They were very nice.
It was just a great pity that they
shrink so much when cooked - my meal
was not as big as it may sound. I had
them on a pile of ready mixed green
salad leaves with some balsamic
dressing.
I switched from old Blake's
Seven recordings to broadcast TV to
watch some QI. I watched the 6pm
episode on Dave, and then watched some
Star Trek when that finished. I went
back to Dave to watch more QI at
8.20pm. After that I went to bed to do
some more reading before attempting
some sleep. It did take a little while
to get to sleep, but I did I seemed to
sleep really well last night. The
temperature was low enough, very much
so this morning, to make sleeping
under the duvet very pleasant.
At 5am this morning I woke up
for a pee, and turned the heater on
low before I got back in bed. I was
quite surprised to see the next think
I knew was that it was just gone 7am,
and time to get up. As usual, almost
the first thing I did, after having a
pee, and washing my hands thoroughly
with soap, was to check my blood
glucose. The hand washing both warms
my hands to make the blood flow
easier, and removes any contaminant
like sweat that may give a false
reading. I was very happy to see my
blood glucose down to 8.1mmol/l. That
was low enough to get my average for
the month a tiny , weeny bit below my
usual monthly average.
My plans for today were altered
by an early morning message from
Angela saying that she doubted she
would be able to make the pub this
Wednesday lunchtime. I'm guessing she
is saving herself for a piss-up
celebrating her daughter getting a 1st
for her university degree. That was
announced last night. In some ways it
is good not going to the pub at
lunchtime because I want to try and go
to Sidcup for the MT Pockets jam/open
mic night at The Iron Horse tonight.
It is going to take a lot of resolve
to go out just when I am thinking
about going to bed. I predict there is
only a 55% chance of me going. The
extra 5% over evens is because at
least it should be dry, but it is
still going to be rather cool tonight.
