Yesterday I had doubts that the sun could
ever break through the murky morning sky, but it
did, albeit some time later than predicted in the
weather forecast. Unfortunately those sunny spells
didn't last any more than an hour...maybe 90
minutes if I am feeling generous. The afternoon
was generally a bit dull, and it was none too
warm. The temperature struggled to reach 15° C.
Once again
the weather forecast contains the
fantasy that there could be an hour of
sunny spells this morning. In
desperation, the latest revision has
moved the time of the sunny spells to
9am, but there has been no sign of the
sun yet, and when I look at the sky it
seems highly unlikely. On the other
hand I doubted the sun would ever
break through yesterday, but it
did...eventually, and then only for
long enough to say hello before hiding
behind the clouds again. The rest of
today is still forecast to be very
grey, but at least the chance of any
rain is still shown as no more than
10%. The latest revision does say
there could be some sunny spells at
4pm. We'll just have to wait and see,
but I'm not holding my breath. Today's
temperature will probably be the same
as yesterday - a rather cold start
(true) and an afternoon high of 15° C.
There is a small chance that tomorrow
may feature an hour or two of sunny
spells, and that it could be a degree
or two warmer than today.
One of the things that spoiled
yesterday was my bowels. It didn't
feel like I managed to empty them
in the morning. That left a
nagging feeling that there was
more to come, and from time to
time I did feel as if something
should happen, but it never did.
The only real outcome of that was
that I didn't feel it safe to go
out. I was otherwise ready to go
to Clapham Junction (probably) if
anything had happened, toilet
wise, before midday. It didn't !
On reflection it was
probably good that I didn't go out
with my camera. The afternoon was
rather grey, and while that rather
flat light can be good to avoid
extremes of contrast, I don't
think it would have produced many,
or any good photos. Instead of
going out to get more photos I did
more with my old photos. My much
longer than intended job of
cataloguing all my existing train
photos took up several more hours
yesterday.
I am making fairly good
progress recording every photo on
an ever increasing size of
spreadsheet. It now features 54
sheets representing 54 different
types of trains. At this point I
am concentrating on "modern"
diesel or electric trains, but I
really ought to include all the
pictures I have of older slam door
trains. Like now, when I am trying
to record as many class 465
"Networker" trains before they are
replaced (although maybe not on
all routes) by class 707 trains, I
did have a flurry of snapping some
slam door trains as they were
being taken out of service. Adding
all those slam door trains to my
spreadsheet will be another huge
task ! I am trying to remember
what the point of all this was....
Another great distraction
yesterday was doing more VHS to
digital video copying. I couldn't
raise the enthusiasm to start
editing the big transfer I did the
previous day of the BBC's "Line
Grove studios" night, and I am
wondering it is worth bothering
with. Yesterday's big transfer was
probably worth bringing into the
digital realm. It was a series of
6 programmes called "The Beer
Hunter" presented by Michael
Jackson - a beer drinker, and not
a singer and dancer ! Although
Jodie, in particular, was aware of
the wealth of "foreign" beers some
time before the programme was
aired, it probably did help lead
on to our regular beer drinking
sessions now.
Yesterday was another day
when I had less time to relax than
it might seem considering how
little I ended up doing, but
somehow I did seem to be doing odd
little things now and again on top
of the two big projects.
Unfortunately it was not enough to
completely distract me from
wanting to eat - even after having
some fish for breakfast. By 2pm,
or thereabouts, I think I was
feeling hungry, but the vague ache
in the belly region could have
been constipation or trapped wind.
Later on there was plenty of
evidence of no longer trapped
wind.
As I write this I can't
help but smiling at the idea
that all this talk of bowels and
trapped wind, is typical of old
people. Once upon a time we used
to wonder why old people would
always go on about their
ailments, but now I am old the
reason is crystal clear - we
have nothing better to moan
about !
I'm trying to think how I
satisfied my desire for food
yesterday afternoon. I can
remember eating some cheese, but
it seems unlikely that was all I
had. Whatever it was it did seem
to partly work. It was probably
mind over matter, or maybe it was
just the knowledge that I had done
my best to stop my stomach
rumbling, and anything else just
had to wait until it passed
naturally.
Evidently I was comfortable
enough to leave it a bit late to
cook my dinner. This was partly
because I hadn't fully decided
what I was going to have. I
decided that I should eat the
chicken thighs I had in the fridge
first because they could be the
first thing to go off if left in
there too long. I oven cooked 4 of
them with a good covering of
assorted seasonings, but they took
too long to cook for a 6pm dinner.
I eventually ate them at about
6.30pm. In the meantime, because
the smell of them cooking had me
drooling, I had a can of lentil
soup.
I seemed to sleep better
than recently last night. I think
I was asleep by, or even before
10pm. At first I woke a few times
to go for a wee, but my sleeps
seemed to get longer and longer -
particularly after I turned the
heater on at 3am. By then the
outside temperature was down to
about 8° C. From about 5am (as far
as I can guess) I seemed to have a
huge jumble of dreams. Most seem
to have faded away now, and the
odd fragments are hardly worth
describing. I woke at about
6.40am, and thought I would try
for another 10 minutes, or ideally
20 minutes sleep before getting
up. It was almost 8am when I woke
up next.
The good news is that this
morning my blood glucose is down
to 8.3mmol/l this morning. I am
going to need many more days of it
being this low, or preferably
lower still if I am going to get
the average for the end of the
month down after the high start of
this month. I must say I don't
feel all that wonderful for having
got my blood glucose down, and I
would be happier if I had made a
bigger deposit when I went to the
toilet this morning. Maybe it is
my imagination, but it strongly
feels that the output is not
matching the input.
Once again I have a sort of
constipated feeling. Maybe it
doesn't matter today because I
don't think I have any intention
of going out today. Maybe my
breakfast might do something for
me tomorrow morning. It was a
remarkably oily smoked mackerel
with peri-peri seasoning. It was
nice, but I'll probably be burping
that fishy taste all morning or
more, although nothing has
happened yet.
So what am I doing today ?
One thing I will probably do is to
start editing the "Beer Hunter"
programmes I transferred from VHS
to digital video yesterday.
"Editing" sound more technical (or
something) than simply finding the
start and finish of each episode
in a couple of huge video files,
and saving each one as a numbered
episode. In theory it sounds easy,
but it does require a bit of
patience, and could easily eat
several hours - more of I get
distracted and start to watch some
of it. Ideally I should not watch
any of it, apart from what I need
to see to do the editing, until I
can watch them as a complete set
of programmes (although probably
not all at once). The other
never ending task is the
cataloguing of my train photos. I
might easily spend several more
hours on that.
