The weather forecast
has only changed a little in the latest
revision to it. 10am is now shown as sunny
spells, although the first ones are actually
happening now. It still shows a very high
chance of heavy rain in the early afternoon.
Curiously enough, the BBC weather forecast
shows a moderately low prediction for light
rain with a starting time of 3pm - when the
Met Office say the rain will end. The Met
Office is a bit more generous with late
afternoon sunshine and sunny spells, 5pm may
feature sunny spells, and the last half hour
of daylight may feature full sunshine
(although the sun will be so low on the
horizon that it will not be that useful). The
maximum temperature today is predicted to be
18° C again, but it will be in the late
morning. The afternoon may only be 16° C.
Tomorrow should be bright and sunny, but once
again the highest temperature may only be 18°
C.
I have to admit I went into Olympic
standard laziness yesterday. As usual, it
seemed that the very dull weather had dampened
my spirits too. It was one of those days where
I couldn't even be bothered to get up
properly. By that I mean I didn't have a
shower, and put on any fresh clothes. I wasn't
expecting to see anyone, and while I did
suggest I might go shopping while I was
writing yesterday morning, there was no
particular need to, and so I didn't !
It is hard to say just what I did do
yesterday. I seemed to spend a lot of time on
my PC catching up on I.T. news, and similar
stuff. I also spent some time doing the only
thing with a definite purpose yesterday. It
was to go through all the pictures I took on
Monday, on my outing to Cockfosters, and
select a few more that might be of some
interest here.
On Monday I had barely reached the
platform at Catford station when this freight
train went though being hauled by a class 66
diesel locomotive. Like most of the pictures I
took on Monday, the sun was hiding behind a
cloud, and the picture looks a bit flat. It is
surprising that I thought of Monday as being a
generally nice day.
I spent enough time moaning about the
spiral staircases down to the tube platforms
at Finsbury Park, and I thought I ought show a
picture of one. The next time I use one I will
attempt to count the steps. All I can say now
it that there seem to be a hell of a lot of
them !
Taking pictures on the deep level tubes
is not always easy. Some stations are fairly
dimly lit, and depending on the light
fixtures, they can sometimes have funny colour
casts. This picture of a southbound Victoria
line has reasonable colour rendition, but it
still looks rather dull down there.
The Piccadilly line platforms look much
brighter because the wall opposite the
platform, and the top of the tunnel are
painted white. The only real problem with
these pictures of tube trains is that I
couldn't slow the shutter down enough that the
LED displays on the front of the trains would
resolve without the train being blurred beyond
recognition.
One thing I thought I did a lot of was
eating. Maybe that is just some sort of guilt
trip because under the right circumstances I
could have eaten less. I am also working under
the assumption that I can't remember all I
ate, and so it must have been more than I do
remember (by some sort of twisted logic). This
morning I have reason to think that my food
consumption was more moderate, or better
selected than I thought it might be.
I think I had two bowls of instant
noodles for breakfast. That was probably too
much. My lunch was just cans of soup. I think
I had a "chunky vegetables with beef", and a
can of lentil and bacon soup. At some
point I am sure I must have had a plate of
four rice cakes with cheese and salami on
them. I definitely had a small bag of unsalted
mixed nuts. It didn't feel like it was all
that long after eating something, maybe those
nuts, that I had my dinner. That was quite a
small meal of beef meatballs in a curry
flavoured beef stock gravy with a few
chestnuts. It was supposed to be more than
that, but I couldn't be bothered to prepare
the cauliflower that was to be the major
ingredient.
I washed my dinner down with three
bottles of strong ale - one was a 10% Belgium
beer, and the other two were Fuller's beers -
ESB and Bengal Lancer. The latter two were
strong, but not nearly as strong as that
Belgium beer. That reminds me of another thing
I did yesterday, and I did it while still
completely sober. I ordered 45 x 440ml cans of
Guinness to be delivered by Amazon. It works
out to be just under £1 a can - better
than a third of the price in some pubs, and a
quarter of even a fifth in other pubs.
One curious fact about last night was
that Dave showed two episodes of QI. One was
on at 7.40pm, and the other at 9pm. The latter
finished at 10pm, and having watched both of
them, I was in bed just after 10pm. I read for
a while, but only managed a couple of pages
before I felt very sleepy. It is possible I
was fast asleep by 10.30pm. Like the night
before, I seemed to sleep really well except
for the last hour or two when it was difficult
staying asleep. Had it been in the middle of
summer, and it had been daylight for an hour
or two, maybe I would have got up at 4am, but
not when it is cold, and not light until gone
7am.
This morning I am happy to say my blood
glucose is down from 8.3mmol/l to just
8.1mmol/l. That is almost in the pre-diabetic
area. I thought those strong, and seemingly
sweet beers would ruin this morning's reading,
but I am obviously happy that was not the
case. In an ideal world I would like to
improve on that even further, but I can't see
it happening today.
The most negative thing today is that I
got a message from Angela at 7.30am to say she
wasn't feeling well, and would not be going to
work today. That means no lunchtime meeting
with her today. There is a slight chance that
if she is back at work tomorrow or Friday, she
may suggest we meet on one of those days, but
more likely is that I will just have to be
patient until next Wednesday.
If I look on the brightside, not going
to the pub at lunchtime may save me from a
soaking. In the unlikely event that the
forecast was 100% accurate, I would probably
have got to the pub in the dry, but stepped
out an hour later to go home in a torrential
downpour. I very much doubt the forecast is
that accurate. The Met office forecast still
insists there is a 80% chance of heavy rain at
1pm, 90% chance at 2pm, and back to 80% at
3pm. The BBC forecast still insists there is
no more than a 35% chance of light rain
between 3pm and 5pm, and nothing before that.
To confound things further, neither of the
forecasters mention the random, and moderately
brief, but still very welcome sunny spells we
have had this morning. Sadly the clouds are
thickening now.
Not seeing Angela gives me a little
more time to go to Tesco for a few things, but
I have no idea what I will do after that. Even
if it is not raining it is likely that the sky
will be as black as sin. It will probably be
time to draw the curtains, and pretend it is
night and sleep through it all.....but maybe I
can find something satisfying to do.
