The forecast is right
with respect to to this morning starting at
12° C, and later on we should see 13° C, but
it doesn't seem to be raining as I write this.
The wet road outside shows there has been
rain, but it has left few puddles. The latest
revision has moved a few things around, and
that suggests they really have no idea when it
will rain, or when it won't. It seems like
there could be a few dry hours in the
afternoon, but otherwise it could rain almost
at random. This mini
heat
tepid wave will be past it's best after today,
but tomorrow could still be mild with an
afternoon temperature predicted to be 10° C.
After a damp start, most of the day should be
dry, and there could even be a little bit of
sunshine tomorrow.
On the whole, yesterday was a
miserable day. There was a modicum of
excitement late in the morning when I went
shopping in Tesco. I can't really say I
enjoyed it because as expected, it was really
rather busy in there. I appreciate far worse
is to come, but I still saw people with large
shopping trollies full to the brim, blocking
up the checkouts.
I didn't buy that much while I was in
there. Mostly I stuck to essentials, but I did
buy one little semi-luxury. It was a pack of
"Chinese inspired" marinated pork chops. I
also bought a one litre bottle of whisky, and
a one litre bottle of Smirnoff vodka. Both of
those were discounted by about £5 each for
holders of a Clubcard. I partly stocked up on
instant noodles, but I have a plan to get some
Polish style instant noodles - possibly today.
I think I wanted something really nice,
or at least very bad for me, for lunch when I
got back from Tesco. Cheese on toast might
have been good, or something like eggs and
loads of bacon. Maybe even some sort of ready
meal, but I opted for another bowl of instant
noodles. I think they were Kimchi flavour.
Tesco sell at least two different packets of
Kimchi flavoured instant noodles, and possibly
three. One of them, the packet I had for
lunch, was rather less enjoyable than the
others. I can't quite put my finger on what
makes it different, and not so nice as the
other(s).
I think it was around 2pm, when it was
pouring with rain (it had been no more than
spitting when I was going to Tesco) that Jodie
phoned me. She declared the weather to be
foul, and indeed it was, and while it would
have been nice to have a bit of company, I
agreed that it might be foolish to go out in
it. As much as I agreed with Jodie's decision,
it was still disappointing.
I had no distractions from the awful
weather, and awful TV. In short I was feeling
very bored, and very pissed off. After several
hours of just quietly reading, and getting
uncomfortable after laying down so much, I
decided I would binge watch the final series
of Drop The Dead Donkey that I had recordings
of. I also tried to get drunk on whisky, but
my heart wasn't in it, and I think I had no
more than two large ones over the course of
late afternoon and evening.
I think by about 4pm I was feeling like
dinner time was ages away, and in consequence
I was feeling peckish. I did eat a lump of
cheese, but mostly I had half a small bag of
salted peanuts. I have no idea why, apart from
it being a good thing, that I seem to have
slightly gone off peanuts. Once I was heavily
addicted to them, but now a large handful
seems to more than satisfy.
Finally it was dinner time, and it was
good that I had precooked it, and it just
needed warming up. It was the marinated pork
chops with boiled miniature potatoes and
runner beans. It was simple, but rather nice.
The pork chops didn't taste like anything
Chinese I have ever eaten before, but they did
have a sort of nice taste. It was quite a big
and satisfying meal, and I can't recall
wanting to eat anything else except for one
thing in the last few hours before I went to
bed.
That one thing was a large orange that
I bought weeks ago, and had been sitting on
the kitchen counter top wrapped in the soft
plastic bag I had bought it, and two other
oranges in. I think I had not eaten it because
the other two oranges seemed to be having a
bad effect on my blood glucose readings. It is
sort of odd how some foods can seem to have a
bad effect one day, and no effect another day.
Anyway, it was rather delicious, and I have
plans to buy a couple more at some time.
One thing about last night was how the
temperature was rising to 12° C. It was a huge
change from the sub zero nights recently. I
had turned the heater to low earlier in the
evening, and when I went to bed it was feeling
very comfortable in my bedroom. Maybe too
comfortable because I frequently felt too hot
in bed. I spent some of the night almost
uncovered. I don't think I slept well last
night, although, on the other hand, a lot of
time passed unnoticed, and any proper insomnia
was probably just in the last few hours before
getting up.
I probably had some dreams last night,
and they would probably have been inspired by
the book I had been reading before going to
sleep. It was a pleasant post-apocalypse type
of Sci Fi story, set in England after strange
radiation from the sun made most people
suicidal. It had lots of drama, some lightly
described sex, and ultimately a sad ending. It
was by
Edmond
Cooper, and was called "All Fools Day".
While I can't remember dreaming about it, I
can remember being awake and thinking about it
- at least I think I was awake !
While the outside temperature, and the
heater on low, seemed to keep my bedroom
pleasant warm, the effect seemed to evaporate
when I got up, and as I write this I have the
heater on full. I probably ought to put more
clothes on ! One rather god, and unexpected
thing about this morning was more evidence
that I have finished battling the bug that
left me feeling ill for over a week. Despite
my dinner containing potatoes, and the
marinated pork potentially have sugar in it,
and the definite sweetness of the orange I had
for dessert, my blood glucose had dropped
again. This morning it was a rather
magnificent 8.0mmol/l. Usually I have to try
hard to get it that low, but this morning it
did it all by itself.
The cold grey light outside, plus the
rain (at least I think it is raining now) does
not fill me with much enthusiasm to do
anything, but the forecast still insists it
will be dry by midday. One thing I think I
will definitely do is to go to the little
supermarket on Catford bridge, and stock up
with Polish instant noodles, some more
oranges, possibly some other type of fruit,
and maybe some Turkish Delight. The good thing
about some of the packs of Turkish Delight
they sell there is that if you wash off the
icing sugar you are left with almost sugar
free, nicely flavoured, blocks of gelatine.
One possibility is that I will take
advantage of the trains not being on strike
today to go on a short rail trip. I could get
a train from Catford station to Blackfriars,
and then change to a train to Farringdon
station. From there, probably after a 24 mile
underground walk, I can get an Elizabeth line
train to Maryland station. From there it is
(hopefully) a very short walk to The Cart And
Horses pub where The KT Bush Band should be
playing, with me as "official cameraman" on
3rd February next year. It would be handy to
see where I am going during daylight hours. I
could then call in to the little supermarket
on Catford Bridge on my way home.
