The great unknown
today is when and if it will rain. It is
currently dry, but could start to rain. The
latest revision starts at 10am, and shows
heavy rain until midday, and lighter rain
until 1pm. It then may stay dry until 8pm. It
will then rain for the rest of the night. I
would not be surprised if these time change a
lot during the day, and there could be less or
more rain. The temperature may reach 14° C,
but with no supporting sunshine (the latest
revision removed the sunny spells for 4pm) it
is not going to feel any more than "mild".
Tomorrow may not see a single ray of sunshine,
and the morning and evening may see light
rain. It is going to be colder again with just
11° C as a short lived maximum.
The great achievement yesterday
was not going to Tesco, but not eating
incorrectly after going to Tesco ! A minor,
but not insignificant thing was that at
approximately 11am it seemed dry and mild
enough to not bother with a coat when walking
to and from Tesco.
I don't seem to have a firm memory of
it, but maybe that means that the walk to and
from Tesco was neither good nor bad - no
spring in my step, but nothing to slow me
down. I was fairly careful about what I
bought in Tesco, and nearly everything I
bought was an essential, but I did buy two
"naughty" things. One was a two slice pack of
gala pie (pork with an egg in the middle), and
the other was a "Rustlers" smoked rib sandwich
(the type that has to be cooked/heated in the
microwave for a minute or two).
I had the gala pie for lunch, and as
expected it straddled that fine line between
very nice and indifference. I think the
problem is that it looks nicer than it is,
although it would probably be nicer if
slightly warm. I have yet to enjoy, if indeed
enjoy is the right word, the Rustlers smoked
rib sandwich. It sounds really nice, but I
feel sure I have had one before, and the bread
tastes awful, and the "smoked rib" is just a
bit of artificial smoked flavour gristle....or
something like that.
As I had my lunch, a quite early lunch,
not long after midday, the sky lightened up,
and soon after some rays of sunshine got
through the clouds. I decided that I would
have a quick rest to part digest my lunch, and
to recover from the walk to and from Tesco,
and then I would go out for a walk. I made the
fatal mistake of closing my eyes, or maybe it
was a very handy mistake. I doubt I was asleep
for more than 30 minutes, but when I woke up
it had got very dark outside. Any thoughts of
a walk evaporated completely.
I never really did much for the rest of
the day, but I did do one thing that involved
very little effort. I found out that there
were three series/seasons of Star Trek:
Picard. I had watched the first season, and
although my memory is a bit hazy, after a
slightly dodgy start, I enjoyed it. The start
was a bit plastic, and it was like the writers
spend too much time setting an unneeded
background. I guess that is the problem of
using movie staff to make a TV series.
With some careful looking around the
murkier end of the internet I managed to track
down series 2 and 3 of Picard. I was quite
surprised how quickly they downloaded. It was
late afternoon, going on early evening when I
watched the first two episodes of season 2 of
Picard. Once again the first episode seemed
very tangled, and almost off putting, but
things got more interesting is episode 2. I
now have quite a few hours of Star Trek:
Picard to watch in the near future. Even
further in the future there may be a similar
series featuring Q.
My dinner, which I ate while watching
Picard because there was nothing on live TV to
attract my attention, was a nice part healthy,
and part unhealthy meal. It was healthy
because it contained very little sugar. it was
unhealthy because it was stewed lamb with
white cabbage. The cabbage was fine, probably
good, but the lamb contained a lot of fat. It
is not good for you, but on the other hand I
have noted in the past how it makes the
cabbage nice and slippery. I am not sure how I
can describe that as a good thing, but it is.
Maybe it was because of a couple of
recent poor night's sleep that I seemed to
sleep very well last night. I was in bed, and
after reading for a while, ready for sleep
around 9pm, and while I can't be sure, I seem
to think I was asleep quite close to 9pm. I am
surprised I fell asleep so quickly because my
dinner did make me feel a bit full, but worse
was that I seemed to be on the point of a bit
of reflux after all the fat I consumed.
I think I fell asleep partly uncovered,
and a few hours later I felt a bit too cool,
and after a pee I went back to sleep with the
duvet fully over me (except my face). I slept
like that for the rest of the night. I was a
little surprised that I would have felt cool
that first time because I had left the heater
on low, and every time I went to have a pee
(maybe 3 times in the night) I noted that it
didn't seem to feel uncomfortable in the
bathroom with an open window.
I can only remember a little bit of one
dream, and even that is very patchy. It was
set in a big telephone exchange that had a mix
of old, battleship grey, equipment, and more
modern "light straw" painted equipment. I can
remember walking through the place, but not
doing any work. It was very near home time,
and I had an idea that if I could climb out a
window I could shorten my journey home. I
opened a first floor window, and I thought I
could see a possible way down, but bearing in
mind that telephone exchange floors are twice
the height of domestic rooms, it did seem
rather a long way down. I bottled out, and
started off on the long way out, which I think
let me out on the wrong side of the building
to where the bus stop was.
It was about 6.45am when I got up. It
has been happening every day in my life, but I
still can't work what it is that says this
time is the time to get up, and not any other
time I might have woken up. In theory I would
have enjoyed another hour or even two of the
seemingly good sleep I had got in the night,
but something said it is really time to get
up...and I did. It was soon evident that my
eating regime, particularly my dinner, turned
out well. This morning my blood glucose was
right down at just a magnificent 7.3mmol/l.
With such a low reading I felt
justified having two lots of instant noodles
this morning. One of them was quite a small
portion. I may be further justified in having
those two portions because if all goes well I
shall be skipping lunch today. At 3pm Chain
are doing a special St George's day gig in The
Shortlands Tavern. It is obviously not a late
night gig, which I can't seem to stay awake
for these days. It is easy to get to, but
there is a catch.
The trains from Catford stations to
Shortlands are only running once an hour today
(probably because engineering work means they
have to use Victoria station instead of
Blackfriars). To make life even more
difficult, I have to choose to arrive far too
early, or maybe 15 minutes late. I think it
probably best to arrive a bit late. I shall
have to keep a very close eye on the time so I
don't end up with a very long wait,
potentially just under an hour, when I want to
go home again - although at a pinch I could
get a bus to Bromley, and then the bus from
Bromley to Catford. (I could even go that way
I guess, but I prefer the speed and
predictability of a train).
