Yesterday morning was fine
and sunny, but on the stroke of
midday the clouds because too
thick for even sunny spells. It
may have been an hour two later
when the first rain fell. The Met
Office forecast said the afternoon
would just be dull, and the BBC
forecast predicted thunderstorms.
The BBC came closer to reality
because it did rain a lot in the
afternoon, but it was just
persistent drizzle rather than
heavy rain and thunder. The even
was dry, but by then the day had
been ruined. It was slightly
warmer than the previous day, at
16° C.
Like yesterday, this
morning has started out with
blue skies, and bright sunshine.
The Met Office says the last
sunshine will be at 11am, and
the BBC say at Midday. The Met
Office say a single hour of
light rain at 4pm, and the BBC
predict 3 hours of light rain at
6, 7, and 9pm. Both forecasters
predict 17° C. Tomorrow is the
Petts Wood May Fayre (that I
intend to try and get to), but
the outlook looks either bad, or
atrocious. The Met Office say
lots of mostly light rain in the
afternoon, and the BBC predict
thunder and lightning ! Both
predict it will be about 15° C,
although the Met Office say it
might be 16° C in the early
evening.
Yesterday started
out OK. The bright sunshine was
very cheerful, but the dullness,
and light rain in the afternoon
killed that cheerfulness. I
think I started to feel
depressed, and thinking that I
would not be wanting to go out
in the evening became a self
fulfilling prophecy.
The morning sunshine
spurred me on to have a quick
shower before getting ready to
go out, but only to Poundland.
The walk to Poundland is longer
than to Tesco or Aldi, and I
managed to keep up quite a
decent pace without suffering
any significant aches or pains
except for a few mild hints from
my legs to slow up a bit. I
considered I was testing more
than my legs, and did my best to
keep up a fair walking pace.
maybe not the full theoretical 5
mph, but closer to what seems to
have always been my "standard"
comfortable walking speed of
just over 3 mph.
Poundland was slightly
disappointing in so much that
they didn't stock any balloon
style beer glasses. I feel sure
I have seen them there, or
somewhere local, some unknown
number of years ago. On the
other hand they did have packets
of Gollom sugar free choc chip
cookies. I bought three packets
of them. They also had a 3 for
£3 deal on some tortilla chips.
I bought three assorted packets
of those. They seemed to suggest
a very low sugar content, and
that seems to have been the
case.
There were a few other
things I bought, and there were
some things I might have bought,
but didn't. The latter included
some tealights that had nice
scents when not alight, but very
offten they dodn't seem to smell
of anything but wax when alight.
The next time I go there I may
buy a few of them to confirm my
worst fears - or maybe to be
pleasantly surprised. After
paying for my stuff I tried to
walk home even faster, but that
barely lasted a minute before I
was forced to walk even slower
because I was starting to get
some unwanted aches.
I had lost the sun before
I started walking home, but it
was at least another hour for
the first rather light rain
began to fall. It never really
got much worse, but the dullness
was depressing, and it made it
feel cold, which was also
depressing. I know that
yesterday I reported my bank
balance was looking quite
healthy, but I was sort of
counting on not burning much
electricity to keep it that way.
I think I had the heater on low,
just in my bedroom, where I
seemed to spend most of the day,
for nearly all the afternoon,
although I did turn it off a few
times from late afternoon and in
the evening.
I think I had intended to
eat very carefully yesterday,
but I chose to start off with a
lunch of tortilla chips with a
small tub of spicy feta cheese
dip. It was nice, but not
terribly exciting. A few hours
later I had more tortilla chips
with a small tub of spreadable
Cheddar cheese as a dip. That
was a bit nicer, but still not
wonderful. Later on, at around
dinner time, I changed the order
of things and had an apple for a
dessert first. Then I had the
main course of herb infused new
potatoes with some corned beef.
That seemed very nice for the
first few mouthfuls, but once
the novelty was over, and with
just two flavours, it became a
bit boring.
I seemed to have passed
over all I did in the afternoon,
and the reason for that was that
my afternoon was quite
boring....well maybe not boring
as such. Reading is all very
nice, but it is hardly the stuff
that action films are made of,
and neither is snoozing. I also
read quite a bit on the
internet. However, I did do some
genuine work - editing, and
archiving three editions of
Secrets Of The London
Underground.
One thing I noticed about
Secrets Of The London
Underground is that the firsts
series was presented as if Tim
Dunn, the slightly loony, and
frankly often annoying presenter
was the star, and Sidi Holloway
was there just as a side kick
with access to the hidden parts
of the Underground. In series 2
they seemed to get more equal
billing, and in series three she
was the star, and he just the
annoying sidekick - as it should
be !
I had originally hoped to
go out yesterday evening. In
fact I had grand ideas that I
might be able to get to two gigs
last night, and hopefully get
some great pictures, but in the
end I could not raise the
enthusiasm to do so. Maybe I
might have if I had known what
the alternative was. That
alternative was to answer a
phone call from Lee who started
off with a genuine question, and
then collapsed into verbal
diarrhoea. As well as yammering
on about his happier life when
he was almost sane, he also told
some tales which seemed to
challenge reality. That
including saying that he had
received much praise for some
repairs he attempted on some
guitar amps. He said one person
in particular praised him for
his work, but other sources say
that Lee was lucky not have had
a punch in the teeth !
At some time in the day I
ate more from the same, single
bag of tortilla chips. I can't
remember when that was, but I do
know that as I was heading for
bed I was still burping the
taste of those tortilla chips
rather that the corned beef and
potatoes that was the last thing
I ate. That got me quite worried
because I thought that sooner or
later I would get heart burn,
and that would ruin my attempts
to get straight to sleep. It did
happen in a milder way later in
the night.
I think my biggest
difficulty last night was that
once again the temperature was
at that critical level where it
was too warm under the duvet,
but not warm enough without. I
can't seem to remember if I
turned the heater back on then,
or if it was when I woke up at
around 1am. By 4am I was
definitely feeling like my
bedroom had cooled down to the
level which justified the heater
going on full blast. As the room
got warmer I slept ever sounder.
Before that I had not
slept that well at all. I was
having dreams that were annoying
because they seemed so bland and
lifeless. To make matters worse,
I did have some heartburn, but
it happened in a weird way that
I can't really explain. My mouth
was dry when I woke up, and so I
took a gulp of water. It may
have been that I burped at that
moment, but it was as if the
water had bounced at the bottom,
and came back up again mixed
with some bile. It was most
unpleasant, and I took a couple
of Rennies as a precaution.
Maybe they worked, or maybe I
didn't really need them, but I
was able to get back to sleep
again after a while.
From 4am, with the heater
running full blast, I fell into
such a deep sleep that I didn't
wake up for nearly 4 hours, and
amazingly, after all that time I
hardly needed to pee when I got
up. On reflection, I didn't seem
to pee much at al during the
night. Maybe this time it was a
good sign, although often it
seems to be like a false clue.
Last night the clue was
actually true - that I didn't
need to pee much because my
blood glucose was nice and low
this morning. The Contour meter
read 7.5mmol/l, or right on my
dream target. The GlucoRX meter
read very good at just
7.1mmol/l. Even the Sinocare
meter joined in the good news
with a reading of 7.7mmol/l. The
average of all three meters was
7.53mmol/l yesterday, and today
it was slightly lower at
7.43mmol/l. The running total of
all three for this month
currently stands at 7.91mmol/l,
and that is better than last
month's 8.17mmol/l, and in turn
that was lower than all the
months before. It seems that
tortilla chips, despite being
not that nice, really are a low
sugar snack. Maybe also low
calorie too because despite not
having a poo so far this
morning, my weight has dropped
back down after a recent small
peak.
I am not really sure how
I will spending most of today.
Possibly I'll be doing nothing
of note, but this afternoon the
trains are running (no weekend
engineering work again), and
Jodie should be joining me here
for a beer tastings session. I
have my doubts that it will be
anything but mildly boring, but
it might be better than another
boring Sunday. Oh well, tomorrow
could be exciting, if standing
in the middle of a possible
thunderstorm, taking pictures of
a band I may not know or like,
could be called exciting !
