Yesterday was warm, dry and
very sunny. The temperature
reached 27° C,
but at the same time it was
quite a humid feeling day, and
felt quite sticky -
particularly in the evening.
This morning has started off
bright and fresh. Full
sunshine should continue
until 1pm, and then there
will be just sunny spells.
The temperature may only
rise to 22° C today.
Tomorrow maybe almost the
same as today, the forecast
shows a peak temperature of
23° C.
Yesterday was another day
that started well, but did not end
well. The great start was not just
a surprisingly low body weight,
fair blood glucose measurements,
but the smug knowledge that my
changing the big "spinning rust"
hard drive in my PC, with a solid
state hard drive, worked, and I am
happy to say it continues to work
well.
I was a little
worried that I seemed to be
running out of morning faster than
seemed desirable, but I managed to
finish writing here, having a
short rest, and than doing the
full shave, shampoo and shower
routine. The main problem of
rushing all of that so I could get
my usual 12:34 train to get to The
Jolly Farmers pub, was that I
didn't have much time to cool off
after the shower and blow drying
my hair.
It was probably the
first indication that yesterday
would be a sticky day when I just
could not keep my head dry when I
went out. The breeze did help to
keep it almost dry, but I still
felt sticky. I guess I have to
confess I was wearing long
trousers, and a black t-shirt in
the sunshine, which kept me
feeling warmer than shorts and a
white shirt would have done.
Anyway, the good thing is that I
got to the station earlier than
needed.
Being at the station
earlier meant I could stay on
platform 2 to wair for the next
Hayes (Kent) bound train, and take
a picture of it's front before
crossing the footbridge for
platform 1, and the next train to
Ladywell. It made the walk from
home feel almost painless. Maybe
my legs were feeling a bit tired,
but I didn't get the usual angina
pains when I crossed the foot
bridge.
I decided to take my Nikon
P500 camera with me yesterday. It
is a fairly light camera, but has
taken some great train pictures in
the past, but yesterday it seemed
to suffer from the angle of the
sun, or something. Nevertheless, I
did take a few important snaps.
This one, of 707004, was a good
replacement for one I took just
the week before, and which I
thought was a crappy picture. I
used it because it was the first
picture I had taken of 707004 in
blue Southeastern livery.
Yesterday's picture would win no
awards, but it was a much better
replacement.
I got my usual train and
arrived at the pub at the usual
time - 10 or so minutes before
1pm. My timing is still based on
seeing Angela at the pub, even
though it is many months since I
last saw her, and I doubt I will
ever see her in there again. I
still had a nice hour and a bit
(maybe 90 minutes) in the pub. My
big error was in forgetting to
take a pen to do the crosswords.
Fortunately Ayse, my favourite
barmaid, came to my rescue with a
spare pen from behind the bar
(which I returned at the end).
I only stayed for two pints
of Guinness yesterday. While
drinking those I managed to almost
complete the quick crossword, but
there was one clue I just could
not think of an answer for. Maybe
that ruined my chances of doing
the cryptic crossword. I tried for
a time, but could not see any clue
I could solve to get things going.
I ended up reading the paper -
which was good and bad. Listening
to some of the banter going back
and forth - mainly two of the men
at the bar boasting about their
sexual exploits to Ayse - who
listen in good humour, while
probably not believing a word of
it.
I don't recall seeing him
on my way to the pub, but after
leaving I noticed this
(presumably) homeless man having a
sleep on the flat top of a grave
stone. It was in the sun, and had
probably warmed up when he
selected it as his afternoon
sleeping place.
I had taken my two working
mobile phones with me to the pub.
One was my everyday Huawei P30 pro
phone, and the other was my older
Wileyfox Spark phone. The latter
gets the occasional treat of some
very cheap airtime on the Smarty
network (owned by "3"). It home
the data rate is terrible, but in
Ladywell the signal is much
stronger, and the data rate is
very good.
I had originally
decided to take it with me to
retest the data rate, aka download
speed in the pub. It was far, far
better than at home. If I lived in
Ladywell I might transfer my
service to Smarty because it is a
couple of pounds per month cheaper
than Giffgaff. While I had it in
my pocket I thought I would do a
test shot using the camera on the
old phone. On the phones display
it did not look good, but on my PC
this picture of Ladywell station
in the sunshine looked great, and
even shrinking the picture to show
here hasn't spoiled it.
My train back to Catford
Bridge turned out to be another
train that I needed a better
picture of. The original of this
train, as recorded on my big
spread sheet, was rather blurry -
probably motion blur because of a
long shutter speed. It was worth
it getting this better snap, but
sadly I didn't get to see any
trains I had not photographed
before. That is unsurprising
because I am close to having a
full set of class 376, class 465,
class 466, and class 707 trains -
they being the only classes of
trains that run through Catford
bridge. I need to get out more to
get snaps of trains in other parts
of London.
I didn't get any angina
pains walking home from the
station, and it was because I was
walking fairly slowly. The reason
was my legs were really aching. I
sometimes wonder if this is
because I am badly out of
practice, or if it is the symptom
of some other malady. I suspect it
is lack of use. Last year, before
the angina started to take hold, I
was still not walking that
frequently, but I did do several 3
or more miles walks for
sightseeing and exercise. I used
to find then that my legs seemed
to be really stiff for as much as
the first mile, and then would
seem to free up for almost the
rest of the walk, although the
last bit would sometimes get my
legs aching again.
I was very happy to get
home so I could eventually rest my
legs. Before I could sit down I
got some lunch ready. Getting it
ready actually meant taking the
small pack of two Iceland Scotch
eggs, and a small tub of yoghurt
based coleslaw out the
fridge. I though, or rather
I hoped that those two would make
a fairly safe post pub meal. I
have my doubts now, but at least
it was a fairly nice meal, albeit
not terribly exciting.
I ate my lunch while
transferring pictures from my old
phone, plus Nikon camera to my PC.
There was a bit of faffing around
to set it up, but I did the
transfer from phone to PC via my
new class 5 USB Bluetooth dongle,
and I was happy that it was a
fairly fast transfer. I then
selected the pictures I have used
here today, and did the usual
editing of straightening up, and
shrinking down to fit on the page.
After that I treated myself
to a lie down. I read a couple of
pages of my book, but felt my
eyelids drooping. I put the book
down, and very soon I was
snoozing. I am unsure how long it
was for, but I am sure it was at
least half an hour, and possibly
as much as an hour. The good thing
is that I woke up again, and
didn't feel all groggy like used
to happen a lot. I seemed to feel
fine except for some mild hunger.
It was about time to start
to prepare my dinner. It was to be
another of Iceland's "My Protein"
range. This time it was a packet
that intrigued me. It was
described as chicken kebab meat.
It turned out to be thinly sliced
scraps of chicken with some sort
of marinade. The packet suggested
cooking/heating in a microwave,
but also mentioned oven heating. I
went for oven heating to try and
get some colour on what looked
like a very anaemic looking meat.
Until I opened the pack I
didn't really realise that it was
nothing but meat and marinade.
With hindsight it was fairly
obvious. It meant I needed
something to go with it, and I
chose a "microwave in the bag in 2
minutes" bag of "Spanish style"
black rice with some other stuff
in it. I ate both bags, meat and
rice, and it was not all that
good. The rice seemed more
flavourful than the meat, and even
that rice seemed a bit bland. I
completely ignored reading up the
nutritional information until it
was too late, and in fact never
checked it at all. That was
possibly wise or I might have
added guilt to my reasons for a
bad night's sleep.
I did my usual of picking
what, or how much to watch from
the four Star Trek episodes shown
early yesterday evening. I think I
watched most of all four, but
Voyager was a very tedious
episode. Then I did the usual
ritual of turning off the TV for
an hour until turning it on again
at 9pm to watch and record another
episode of The New Avengers.
Curiously enough, it was an
episode I remember watching
possibly when originally aired in
the 1970s (?).
Another curious fact it was
while watching a dull bit of that
episode of The New Avengers, I
suddenly remembered that the day
before I should have been watching
and recording the Tuesday night
airing of another brand new
episode of Secrets Of The London
Underground. I must try and watch
and record the repeat on Sunday
night - I think/hope !
At 10pm, when The New
Avengers finished I went to bed.
Even while watching TV I had hints
of growing heartburn. Once I was
in bed, and had turned over to go
to sleep, the heartburn was bad
enough to keep me from sleeping.
Maybe I might have managed to
ignore it for long enough to get
to sleep, but last night was also
a very sticky night. That was made
worse by a very high blood glucose
level, although at that time I
didn't realise it.
What I did know was that my
chest hurt, and I was sweating a
lot. That could have been a very
bad sign, but I knew the causes,
and so it was extremely annoying
rather than worrying. I did also
have fears that I might have
another stomach upset, but while I
made several visits to the toilet,
nothing happened except the
occasional fart. I tried milder
cure, but at around 1am I had a
slug of "Acidex", at least I think
that is what it is called. It is
an aniseed flavoured gloopy
sludge. It is not exactly
pleasant, but it really did seem
to work this time. It wasn't long
before I felt comfortable enough
to fall asleep.
I woke up three or four
times in the night, and as well as
a pee each time, I also had to
turn around my sweat soaked
pillow. I had tried using the fan
during the night, but the air
being blown at my damp (with
sweat) body almost felt ice cold.
I had to angle the fan away from
my body so all I could feel was
the most gentle, in the extreme,
breeze. I think I was too happy
sleeping that I didn't seem to
bother trying to remember any of
the dreams that I am sure I had.
I was evidently sleeping so
well at the end of the night that
at 6am I got up for a pee, and
then went back to bed where I fell
asleep again almost instantly. It
was almost 8am when I woke up
again. Despite all the peeing and
sweating in the night, I seemed to
have put on several hundred grams.
I am not back where I started, but
it almost wiped out all the great
loss of weight the previous night.
Many oddities were answered
when I checked my blood glucose
levels. They were really terrible.
The Contour meter read 9.4mmol/l.
The GlucoRX meter read 9.2mmol/l,
and the Sinocare meter read
9.1mmol/l. That puts them all in
the pink area - one step short of
the red danger area. No wonder I
was sweating so much last night. I
think that the "My Protein"
chicken kebab meat must share some
of the blame, but maybe the
"Spanish style" rice was more to
blame....although I am sure the
pack showed a low sugar content.
One thing is for sure - I
must try better today. That could
be tricky because today is a
Thursday, and that means it will
be a drinking afternoon with
Jodie, and maybe Michael (I will
see if I can lure him here today).
Fortunately I think I have already
eaten the worst things in the
fridge. I could possibly order a
couple of small shish kebabs -
they are usually very safe - or I
could just convince myself I am
just going to have a tub of known
good, and proven safe, tub of ice
cream (or creamed water as it
sometimes seems) for my dinner.
Tomorrow all will be revealed !
