The
problem with yesterday's weather was
that it was so variable, and
unpredictable. The weather forecast
was no help in deciding if one hour
would feature rain or sunshine. It
could be either, and was usually
both. A lot of the time it seemed
OK, and then it would suddenly rain
for no obvious reason. Then 10
minutes later the sun might come out
for a minute or two, and for that
minute or two it seemed like it
might last long enough to go
shopping, as a for instance. The
only two facts about yesterday's
weather was that the atmospheric
pressure was slowly climbing, and
suggesting better weather was on
it's way, and the afternoon
temperature of 22° C matched the
forecast.
My weather station barometer
says it is 1012mb, and the icon next
to it is a yellow sun. It suggests
that today may be a nice day. The BBC
forecast says the first three hours of
today would feature rain. It is dry as
a bone outside, although it is rather
cloudy. Later on it shows some sunny
spells. The next chance of rain may be
8pm, although it does show a low
chance of rain for almost every hour
today. The temperature may briefly
peak at 23° C today. Tomorrow may
start with a few sunny spells, but
most of the day may be dull. Light
rain is forecast for 3 hours from 2pm,
and the temperature may only reach 21°
C. Just recently it seems we have seen
the last of summer, and are now in mid
autumn.
I spent the first half of
yesterday debating what to do. In the
end I gave up and just decided the
weather was far too variable, and
tending towards the bad side, to even
consider doing anything but staying
in, and being mostly bored. I did end
up doing two useful things. One was
discovering that some coleslaw I
thought should be safe, was actually
loaded with sugar !
Before leaving the subject of
the weather: We have just had some
very light rain. I only noticed it as
a light speckling of rain on my
bedroom window. I doubt it lasted more
than a minute or two. I fear that
today may be like yesterday - too
variable to make any proper decisions.
Yesterday morning I had no idea
what the weather was doing, but with
some mild intention to go out
shopping, I had a shower after I had
finished writing, and had had my usual
post writing rest. My intention had
been to go to Aldi via Michaels house
so I could drop off his birthday card
(he was 78 yesterday), and also a
birthday present of 4 cans of strong
lager. I feel a bit guilty about it,
but when it came to it I just could
not bring myself to go out in such
unpredictable weather.
I was almost about to write
that I had an ultra lazy day
yesterday, but I did three useful
things (I've just remembered the third
thing, but didn't go back to correct
what I had written about just two
things a few paragraphs back). After I
had had my shower I put in a small
hand towel in to soak in Bio
detergent. It was in use to protect my
pillows during some of the sweatiest
nights recently, and was very greasy.
I would come back to that towel
later. My next little job, which
slightly expanded in size as I went
along, was to take out the bag of
stuff for the recycling bin. At the
time the sun was almost shining, and
it seemed nice to stand outside,
Stanley Knife/box cutter in hand, and
slicing up two bit cardboard boxes
from previous beer deliveries, to put
in the green recycling wheelie bin.
While it was almost sunny,
there were still some dark looking
clouds to be seen. It was probably
little more than 5 minutes after I
went back indoors that I heard several
peals of thunder. I ever saw any
lightning flashes, and although some
of the thunder seemed moderately loud,
it did seem to be coming from far
away. As the last peal of thunder was
fading away we had a really heavy
downpour. The odd thing is that
looking out both the front and rear
windows, I could only see light cloud.
It was as if the cloud responsible for
the heavy downpour was sitting
directly over my house.
By now it felt like time for
some lunch. I started off with some
ice cream. I knew it was fairly high
sugar, and that my blood glucose would
probably peak very high, but it never
seems to leave any trace of it the
next morning. The ice cream was nice,
but it is hardly filling -
particularly when I made sure I only
had a small amount. I should have had
the ice cream after what I ate next -
it would be more conventional the
other way around.
The second part was something
that I thought should be very safe. It
was some crispbread like flat bread,
with pumpkin seeds on it, and a small
tub of coleslaw. The third thing I did
yesterday was to look closely at the
nutritional information for that
particular brand (Delphi) coleslaw,
What I saw was horrifying. It said
that there was 6.8gm of sugar per
100gm, and the whole tub was 230gm.
Just that tub along had 15.64gm of
sugar in it, That was higher than the
ice cream I had eaten. I've had my
suspicion about that coleslaw before,
but it was only yesterday that I
seeked the truth. In the future I will
stick to Tesco coleslaw - it is very
low sugar by comparison.
I might have allowed an hour
for my lunch to settle before I went
back to the hand towel that I had left
soaking. The soapy water it was
soaking in looked very greasy. I gave
it about 6 rinses, but I took a break
after that. It may have been an hour
later before I went back to it, and it
seemed that two more rinses were
enough. I hung it on the big clothes
horse in the front room with a fan on
it. It was fully dry only a few hours
later.
After I discovered the truth
about that coleslaw, and had eaten it
on top of the ice cream, I decided
that my dinner had better be nice and
simple, and ideally safe. It was going
to be two packets of instant noodles.
One of them was supposed to contain
zero sugar. The other I think was
fairly low. It was not a terribly
healthy dinner - being fully processed
food with no real fruit or vegetables,
but I enjoyed it.
I will confess that a bit later
(20 minutes later, maybe) I had a
snack like "afters". It was some more
of the crisp flatbread with some
cheese on it. It was probably not very
filling, but it tricked my mind into
thinking I had a full dinner. I
must admit that I was tempted to have
more snacks later because all that was
on TV last night was pretty tedious.
About the only programme I paid that
much attention to was an old repeat of
QI, but even that was not really an
attention grabber.
I think QI finished at 10pm and
I went straight to bed. From then it
was a very familiar story. I read a
couple of pages from my current book,
and 10 or 15 minutes later I was fast
asleep. I think I woke at about
midnight to go for a pee, but it was
3am when I woke next time, and that
time I did not get straight back to
sleep. I was feeling cold, and I
grabbed the empty duvet cover to cover
me. That part worked, but at 4am I was
still feeling cold,
I then decided to give in and
turn the heater on low. I don't think
it was until 5am before my bedroom was
feeling warm enough for deep sleep. I
had been awake for most of the hour
waiting for it to feel warm. I didn't
sleep for much more than an hour until
it seemed to be time to get up. I
still felt very tired, but I didn't
think I would be able to get back to
sleep again, and didn't really try to.
Some of my later pees were
fairly big, but some in the start of
the night were hardly worth bothering
about, and I think it was just force
of habit to get up and go for a
pee. By this morning it felt
like I had done enough, but more would
have been better - even if that would
be a cheat. This morning, just over
200ml more pee would have seen my
weight drop enough to register a 100gm
loss. Sadly it turned out to be a
200gm gain. It is still in a fair
place though.
Resisting eating more yesterday
worked in one respect. There was a
small drop in my blood glucose this
morning. Any drop is good, but I would
have liked a much bigger drop more.
The Contour meter read 8.1mmol/l, and
so did the GlucoRX meter. The Contour
Plus meter read 8.2mmol/l -
slightly higher, but in the same ball
park. The average of all three was
8.13mmol/l, and that is an improvement
on 8.4mmol/l the day before. The day
before that it was 8.2mmol/l, and so
this morning was very slightly better
than that too.
Today's plan is quite simple.
It is a Wednesday, and as I'll be
taking a walk through the park,
diverting to Ladywell station to pick
up two copies of The Metro, and then
on to The Jolly Farmers. Once there it
will be the usual 2 pints of Guinness,
do as much of the crosswords in The
Metro as I can, and listen to, and
maybe take part in some banter. I am
hoping to take a chance of not putting
on a coat, although it might be not
such a bad idea. As well as the
possibility of rain, it is currently a
bit cool outside - currently
about 19° C.
