The
forecast for yesterday included
several times when rain was
forecast. Only light rain was
forecast, but we did get a few very
heavy downpours. Fortunately none
lasted for very long, and for
reasons that will be explained
further down the page, that heavy
rain was actually welcome. There
were also some periods of fairly hot
sunshine as well, but I don't think
the temperature exceeded the
forecast 19° C.
At the moment the sky only has
a few fluffy clouds, and most of the
sky (I can see as I write this) is
blue. We have the full sunshine that
was supposed to finish after 7am. At
this time (almost 9am) it should be
getting very cloudy, and in the next
hour it could rain, but somehow that
doesn't seem likely, and at 10am when
the first rain is shown, there is only
a 32% chance of rain. All the rain
shown on the weather chart is either
light rain or drizzle. Unfortunately
the rain clouds will block most
sunshine, and today the maximum
temperature may only be 17° C.
Tomorrow may be very wet, and the BBC
have thrown in some of their
favourites - thunderstorms. Tomorrow's
temperature may be back to peak at 19°
C.
Yesterday was quite a good day
for one, unexpected reason. Without
that reason it may have been another
day when I could hardly bother to do
anything. I didn't seem to feel all
that bad yesterday, but I did feel a
bit bad, and that was enough to dampen
my enthusiasm for almost everything.
One thing was terribly annoying
yesterday morning, and it was that
somehow I managed to completely screw
up the formatting of this page. I have
no idea what was going wrong. I am no
expert at html coding, but I can often
correct a few errors, but not
yesterday morning. It all started when
I copied and pasted something without
using the "paste without formatting"
option. That something was a
temperature copied off my spreadsheet
of body temperature measurements. I
have no idea what else was included in
the copying, but when I did the paste
the entire page when wonky. The fonts
used changed into something different,
and something tiny.
I had been looking forward to a
nice rest after writing - assuming it
all went as usual - but yesterday
morning I probably spent a couple of
hours or more, trying to get back
where I started. I did experience
something similar once and I think on
that occasion I just ended the
program, and started from fresh. had I
done that yesterday I might have saved
myself a lot of time (although I would
have lost a fair bit of work).
Had I written yesterday's piece
at the right time, and saved it to my
web server at about the normal time, I
would have looked forward to a half
hour, maybe a little more, rest, and
then I would have gone back to some
laundry I had left soaking overnight.
I did have a sort of half hearted
rest, but my brain was still thinking
about how I might correct the mangled
web page. After a while I went to the
bathroom to finish washing my laundry.
It was a pair of lounge pants,
and my favourite pair of usually
indoor, but they have been outside of
very warm days, shorts - with the most
important belt loops on them (unlike
the two new pairs I ordered recently).
I am actually wearing one of those new
pairs of shorts right now, and
provided I don't try and put anything
heavy, such as my mobile phone, in a
pocket, they don't slip down. They are
very comfortable, and perfect indoor
drinking shorts - if I don't try and
carry my mobile phone in a pocket. If
I do they would end up around my
ankles in minutes !
It was my intention to sew some
belt loops on those shorts. It would
be hard work to hand stitch them, and
I don't have a sewing machine (I am
also unlikely to get one). My latest
thinking is to perhaps try sewing some
belt loops on one pair, but to pay a
lot more attention to the descriptions
and pictures, and order another couple
- with belt loops ready for one of the
spare belts I have. I doubt I would be
wearing shorts like these (quite
flimsy, and above the knee) until next
summer, and so there is no rush -
unless there are any saving to be made
by buying them off season.
I finished that washing, and
hung it up to dry on the big clothes
horse in the front room (which was
nice and warm from the sunshine). I
could have had a shower after that,
and finally gone out to Aldi to get
the shopping I've been meaning to get
for days now, but I had another lie
down, and read some more from my book.
I'm not sure what time it was, but my
rest was disturbed by my doorbell
ringing.
It was a builder/roofer who
wanted to point out that my guttering
was leaking. I would have said thank
you and goodbye, but that leak is
quite spectacular during heavy rain,
and I have been thinking about getting
it fixed for at least the last 12
months, and probably more. I decided
to hear him out. I'll give him one
thing, he was not pushy like some
builders/roofers, although like most
he did claim to be working just down
the road - and old trick that I was
well aware of, but maybe this time it
might have been true.
The last time this happened I
was quoted a rather large price, and I
said I would think about it. Yesterday
the initial estimate was for £560, and
I said that was a bit rich for me. He
said that if he did it another way,
which sounded a lot like the original
way, he could do it for £360. That
sounded more reasonable, and we shook
on it. He, and his two sons drove off
to get new guttering and now joints
for it.
They came back about an hour
later, and got to work. I reckon that
the three of them, with dad, who was a
fairly chunky man, staying firmly on
the ground, while one son did all the
work up the ladder, and the younger
son doing all the fetching and
carrying. I didn't oversee most of the
work because I only had a limited view
from ground level. In a way it didn't
matter because just as they were
finishing the heavens opened up, and
my new guttering got a very severe
test - which it passed.
When it came to payment one of
the sons asked if I could pay some or
all of it in cash. I said I could
manage £100, and the rest would be by
bank transfer to the bank account that
I was given the details for. It was
all quick and simple, and provided the
new guttering doesn't start to leak,
or fall off in the winter, then I
guess I am happy. I was finally
able to relax - a bit.
In an ideal world I would
finally have had a shower, and gone
shopping in Aldi, but it didn't seem
very important, and plus I had to come
down from a sort of stressful few
hours. I never did have a shower, and
I never did go out. I spent the next
hour reading, and I think this time I
also managed a brief snooze. Before
long it was time to think about
dinner. I still have 3 or 4 days worth
of frozen food in the freezer, and
picked a Sri Lanka style curry for
dinner.
I think I had dinner a little
earlier than my usual aim of 6pm (but
it might have been after that - it all
seems a bit hazy now). The curry was a
bit nice and a bit not nice. The
chicken had a slightly odd taste -
presumably some sort of unfamiliar
curry taste. The coconut rice was
good, although a little dry. I had
some lemon flavour ice cream for
dessert. I didn't eat any more for the
rest of the day except about a cubic
inch of mature Cheddar cheese.
I watched the usual Star Treks
last night, but I went to bed at 9pm
instead of watching QI or Have I Got
News For You (of which only the latter
was being shown, and not until 10pm).
before going to bed I put the heater
on low, and set the thermostat to just
keep the room warm with it getting too
warm. I almost got it right, but I
think I turned the heater fully off at
3 or 4am. It seemed like my night was
very restful despite being punctuated
by getting up for semi large pees
every few hours.
It was either 4 or 5am when I
turned the thermostat up on the heater
to get my bedroom nice and warm before
I got up, although I don't think it
needed that much heating despite it
being quite cool outside (just 13° C).
I got up just after 6am, and the first
thing I needed was a big-ish pee. I
thought I needed a poo as well, but as
is common a lot lately, it was just
wind. Even my last visit the toilet
only produced wind.
I thought I had eaten pretty
much what I would usually eat
yesterday, but maybe not. The sugar in
the ice cream would have raised my
blood glucose a lot, and caused a lot
of peeing - in theory, but maybe not
in practice. I did pee enough that
when I weighed myself I found I had
lost 100gm. That is very little, but
at least it is the right direction. A
few more mornings like this will see
me back on track after a small rise in
the last 3 or 4 weeks.
I thought that the extra
peeing, or so it seemed, would
indicate very poor blood glucose
readings, but they were fairly good
(although short of being great). The
Contour meter, and the new GlucoFix
meter bother read 7.4mmol/l. That is
pretty good, and not too far from
excellent. The GlucoRX meter read
7.7mmol/l, still the light green on my
spreadsheet colour code, and so pretty
good too.
Today I really must have a
shower, and if I felt inclined, which
I don't seem to, I could wash my hair
too. Once clean I could finally go
shopping in Aldi as I have been
meaning to do for almost a week now !
The only downside is that the sun has
recently gone in, and some horrible
looking dark clouds are building up.
Only light rain is forecast, but the
clouds look ominous enough for a
thunderstorm. I doubt I will go out in
anything worse than very light rain. I
still might make it though. I'm not
sure what else I might do today. I
guess one possibility is to order
another pair of shorts, but his time
make double sure they have belt loops
this time !
