The
weather forecast for yesterday
looked appalling, but the reality
was much milder. There was some
rain, but it was less than forecast,
and although the sky did become very
dark at times, there was not a
single peal of thunder heard, and
not a single flash of lightning
seen. My memory is a bit sketchy,
but I think we actually had sunny
spells instead of rain at some
times. It was not a warm day. The
temperature peaked at just 17° C,
but it didn't seem to feel that cool
indoors, although it probably did
feel colder if there was some rain.
The first thing to say about
today's weather is that it definitely
was 13° C earlier, and while the sky
was not quite clear enough for full
sunshine, we have had an almost non
stop sunny spell - but only "almost".
There is a small chance of rain up to
1pm, and from 2pm it is probable that
it will rain. Even so, only light rain
is forecast, and the chances are
fairly low for some of those hours.
From 6pm sunny spells may return, and
continue until sunset. Today may be
warmer, by a single degree, than
yesterday. Today 18° C is forecast.
Clear skies tonight may see
temperatures plummet. Tomorrow is
forecast to start at just 11° C.
Tomorrow may see a mix of mainly
sunshine and sunny spells, but like
today there could be rain in the
afternoon. Apart from 4pm when there
is a 42% chance of rain, the other
hours of rain are shown as low as 32%.
Those hours may well be dry, but when
tomorrow arrives all these predictions
may be revised beyond recognition.
Yesterday I had grand ideas of
going out. That could have been a walk
to The Jolly Farmers, or maybe just a
walk to the shops or something, but
there was a problem - I was expecting
two deliveries, and felt the need to
be in when they arrived. In fact I
only got one delivery, delivered by
Amazon themselves.
That delivery left their depot
modestly early (for Amazon), 11:51am,
I am unsure what time it arrived. I
know the notification I got to say it
had been delivered came at 19:34, but
I think that was a couple of hours
after it was actually delivered. On
the whole I was happy with what I
ordered, but I thought the key chains
seemed shorter than ideal. I bought
two types, and they could possibly be
joined. One of them, and possibly two
if I join them, is intended for
Michael, but he probably won't like to
use them, and currently prefers to
keep his house keys at the bottom of a
full carrier bag that looks like it
could split at any minute.
Despite earlier ideas of doing
stuff like going out, it turned out
that I was just as lazy feeling
yesterday as most recent days. One
thing I did do because it needed close
to zero effort, was to top up the
rechargeable batteries in a few items.
The most important was probably a pair
of bluetooth audio
transmitters/receivers. They seemed
very useful when I first bought them 4
or 5 years ago, but I haven't used
them at all for the last few years.
They do suffer from one
problem, and that is that being very
low power devices, it takes an
appreciable time to turn the analogue
audio to digital. For many things that
didn't cause any problem, but when
used with video it was obvious by poor
lip sync. Sadly, using them as a
wireless link between a TV and
external speakers was one of the
original reasons I first bought
them. The first one I bought was
a single unit, instead of a matched
pair. It did seem slightly better in
some way I can't remember, but I left
it for so long without topping up the
lithium battery that the battery
completely died, and I thought the
simplest thing was to throw it away. I
might have attempted a repair if I was
actually using it.
One thing I did yesterday was
to trap the long haired, fluffy pussy
cat who has come to like me*. To trap
him I used an open cardboard box -
cats seem to feel an instinctive urge
to get in, and mold them selves to the
shape of the box. It took all of 30
seconds after spotting the box for him
to jump in.
* As far as I can know, it seems he is
a regular visitor to the neighbours
either side of me. I know he spends
time with Ray and Sue on one side. I
recently saw the back door open on the
other side, and although I couldn't
make out what was being said, I am
sure I heard the lady that side
talking to him. Including his own
house, he so far seems to be at home
in four houses that I know of
(assuming he actually spends much time
in the house where he is fed).
One new observation is that he
had a collar on yesterday. At first I
thought it was a flea collar, and
maybe it is that as well, but a name
tag hangs from it, and a couple of
other unidentified things. The light
was too bad, and there was a lot of
long fur in the way, and I have not
yet managed to read what is on the
name tag. I am wondering if the other
things may be an RF ID tag to open a
cat flap, but once again I have been
unable to see them in detail. Maybe
that might happen today with the help
from Jodie.
While he was squirming around
in the cardboard box he left his belly
exposed as if he was inviting me to
stroke it. I was acutely aware of the
dangers of trying, but did it anyway.
He gripped my hand in his paws, and
gently bit me. It is a reflex action
because it is how they often kill
their pray. Although he was sort of
gentle, I still came away with a
couple of scratches, but I expected
it, and I only have myself to blame.
After a while I left the cat
alone, but I did leave the back window
partly open in case he felt trapped or
something. I don't think he actually
felt trapped, but with nobody to fuss
over him, I think he got bored. When I
checked 20 or so minutes later he had
gone out. When I looked out of the
upstairs back window I soon spotted
him.
I used my small Nikon DSLR
camera with 200mm zoom lens to get
this picture of the cat snoozing on a
garden seat under the overhang of
their wet room, or whatever it at the
bottom of their garden. He briefly
looked up as I opened the window for a
clearer shot, and as can be seen, he
kept one eye open to see what I might
do.
I thought it was after, but
instead I now think it was before I
took these pictures that I stopped for
some lunch. Now the main problem I
have is trying to remember what I had
for lunch. Suddenly my mind switches
from blank to a complete memory -
literally after typing the full stop
at the end of the previous
sentence. Somehow checking my
weight and blood glucose for yesterday
brought it all back for me.
Both my weight and blood
glucose were OK, but not great. I
thought I ought to have a lunch that
was similar - OK, but not great (in
terms of nutrition). I decided on
cheese on sliced tomatoes and sliced
red chillies, on toast would somehow
fit the bill. Most importantly it was
rather nice, and there was the added
plus point that cheese on toast is a
fairly rare treat for me. I possibly
had something like a small packet of
crisps as a sort of "dessert" after
the cheese on toast.
After dinner I had my usual lie
down, and the only thing of concern
was to keep an ear out for the
doorbell. I didn't realistically think
that Amazon would arrive until much
later in the afternoon. In fact it
would not have mattered if I had gone
to The Jolly Farmers at lunchtime
because I think it was just after 5pm
when my parcel arrived. As mentioned
nearer the top of the page, I was
happy with everything in that parcel
except that the key chains I had
ordered were shorter than expected.
I think I knew by then that a
further parcel, being delivered by
Royal Mail would be delivered today,
probably by my regular postman. He
typically arrived around midday. Back
to yesterday, and I felt safe to have
a long lie down, read some of my book,
and if I felt the need, which I am
sure I did, have as long a snooze as I
could. I was awake and alert
again well before Amazon arrived.
I was thinking about dinner
when my parcel was delivered. It was
still a bit early to prepare dinner,
and once I had inspected everything
that I had bought I could put my feet
up again, although I didn't actually
do that. I know it was not long until
6pm and dinner time, and I think I
passed the time looking at stuff on
the internet. One such think was
looking to see what other books I
could buy by the same author of the
book I am currently reading -
"Eclipse" by John Shirley.
The book I have is actually the
first part of a trilogy. I saw that
Amazon were selling all three books as
one big book, but I seem to recall it
was rather expensive. I also saw that
there were maybe half a dozen other
books by the same author. I still
can't make up my mind about his
writing. It seems to alternate between
some excitement and some tedium as he
explains the background to the next
exciting bit. It is a standard way of
writing, but other authors seem to do
it is a less tedious manner.
I am well over half way through
the book, and one thing I am sure
about is that it feels like I have
never read it before despite taking it
from my own bookshelves. I wonder if I
started reading it, and then got bored
too quickly. This time I seemed to
have persevered through the boring
bits, and I am quite enjoying the non
boring bits. I just grit my teeth
through the boring pages, knowing that
if I can remember some of them for
just long enough, it does make the non
boring bits make more sense.
My dinner was a spicy pulled
pork and rice ready meal - the same as
one I had a week or so ago, and
thought it to be oddly nice. I
followed that with rather a lot of ice
cream, but I seem to be less worried
about eating ice cream now - maybe
more so since I discovered that my
wild theory about the additive Sodium
Alginate turned out to have some truth
to it. Sodium Alginate, made from
seaweed, does reduce sugar absorption
in the gut. The catch in this theory
is that not all ice cream has a lot of
Sodium Alginate in it. Many use
Carrageen, or Irish Moss. That is also
made from seaweed, but while it is
used for the same reason, to make the
ice cream more creamy, and more
stable, it does not seem to be noted
for reducing sugar uptake in the gut.
I spent most of my evening
watching TV. By the time I was
watching QI (or was it Have I Got News
For You ?) I was definitely feeling
rather tired. I didn't stay up to
watch whichever of the two shows was
on second. I went straight to bed, and
I don't think I read before trying for
sleep. I think I got the thermostat on
my heater about right last night
because I was definitely feeling very
comfortable, rather than too hot or
cold as I laid in bed, and fell asleep
in about 10 minutes flat.
I had one period of insomnia
last night. I think it was around 2 or
3am when I woke up, had a pee, and
didn't seem to be able to fall asleep
again for a couple of hours. That is
how I seem to remember it, but I have
a feeling that I may not have realised
I dozed off now and then during the
time I thought I was awake. The clue
was that there seemed to be lost time
involved - suddenly the clock would
jump forward by half an hour or so. I
was probably asleep for that half an
hour.
I didn't seem to miss the sleep
I may not have got - assuming that
some of that insomnia wasn't actually
a dream. I am only aware of having one
dream, and apart from he vaguest of
vague memories I can't say anything
about it apart from a sort of feeling
it involved being at work. This
morning was another morning when I
woke up ready to do my usual ritual of
health readings and a visit to the
toilet. I also refreshed the weather
forecasts ready to take screen shots
later.
After that I laid down again,
and probably slept for at least
another half hour. It was perhaps
fortunate that after that half hour
sleep, and other time passed while
doing stuff, I felt ready to visit the
toilet again. This time it was a poo
as well as a pee. When I weighed
myself again I found I had lost weight
instead of putting it on as originally
thought. The differences are small,
and the loss was not an overall loss,
it was the loss of some of a gain. My
"official" record shows I actually put
on 100gm yesterday, and that was 400gm
less than my original reading - so
both good and bad.
My blood glucose was down
slightly. The Contour meter read
7.5mmol/l, or spot on my current self
invented target. The GlucoRX meter
read the same at the GlucoFix meter,
at 7.9mmol/l. Yesterday my average of
all three was 8.07mmol/l. I think that
is best described as "adequate" or
"good enough". Today the average was
7.77mol/l, and that could be described
as good, but still short of excellent.
Today I have a possible plan.
Once I have finished writing this I
will have my usual lie down, but it
may last a bit longer because I will
be waiting for the postman. Once he
has been, and dropped off my parcel
with a pair of shorts - with belt
loops - I can take the time out to
have a shower, and wash my hair. After
that, assuming there is still plenty
of time left, I want to go out
shopping to Aldi.
Top of my shopping list will be
some cat food. I am sure that he is
well enough fed by his true owners,
but the odd treat is usually rewarded
with extra (probably false) affection.
I also could do with more Diet Coke,
and some ready meals and other
edibles, but I must try and not go too
mad and end up carrying a huge weight
home.
A bit later, but maybe not too
much later, Jodie should be over for
some beer tasting. I would not be
surprised if we are are not joined by
Michael a bit later. It would be nice
if we were also joined by fluffy cat,
and if we are, I hope that between me
and Jodie, we can read, and possibly
photograph his name tag and the other
stuff on his collar. It would be nice
to be able to call him by his real
name instead of just "Fluffy Cat".
