Yesterday
was nice until about 1pm, but the
afternoon was definitely wet. Having
said that, it was mostly light rain,
or drizzle in the afternoon. The
afternoon high was just 17° C,
according to the forecast, but it
didn't seem to feel too bad. .
Once again, today will be a lot
like yesterday (statistics say that
saying today will be like yesterday is
usually more accurate than the weather
forecast !). Having said all that,
reality is not like the forecast at
the moment. Much of the sky is quite
dark, and there has been on and off
drizzle since the small hours of
today. It looks very damp outside ! As
I write this it seems that a
thunderstorm is more likely than the
forecast sunny spells until 11am. The
afternoon is definitely shown as
featuring light rain until 5pm. By 7pm
the chance of rain will have fallen to
just 6%, and down to zero at 8pm. The
afternoon will be 17° C again.
Tomorrow may start bright and sunny,
and that may include full on sunshine,
but it all goes wrong after midday. By
2pm there will probably be some light
rain to start with, but 4pm that light
rain may change to heavy rain. For
once, the "Weather Warning" is about
wind instead of thunderstorms, and
doesn't apply until Monday.
Yesterday seemed anything but
relaxed. Thanks to my "friend" Lee's
talent for verbal diarrhoea when on
the phone, my morning was ruined, and
the knock on effect was to pretty much
ruin the afternoon, although by the
afternoon I had just about given up on
the idea of doing anything useful.
I was in the middle of writing
yesterday when I was interrupted, and
so I have already, partly, vented my
spleen about it. It was awkward
cooking my lunch, and feeding the
fluffy cat while listening on the
phone, and uttering the occasional
yes, no, or maybe. The cat was quite
annoyed about it all, and laid down
across the door out of the dining room
to the rest of the house. While gently
trying to entice the cat to move I
accidently brush my hand across his
belly, and managed to get another
scratch and bite - all done semi
gently, but not gently enough not to
draw blood.
I left the cat in the dining
room with the window open so he could
go out if he wanted. He got bored of
waiting for me, and did go out, but
not before eating the food I had put
down for him. I doubt t was much more
than an hour later when I saw him
eating more food that had been put
down by my neighbours. He spent the
next hour or two dozing off while the
food was digested. He was, of course,
curled up on their garden chair under
the shelter of the overhang of their
shed roof.
After I had my lunch of two
slices of cheese on some tomato paste
on toast, I had a lie down to read. It
is so common place these days, and I
assume that like most days, I ended up
snoozing for an hour or two.
When I felt ready for "action", the
only thing I could think of doing was
to do some preparations for today.
Today, if the weather is not too bad,
I will be going out bus spotting -
vintage bus spotting.
One little, but routine task
was to select a lens for my
lightweight Nikon DSLR camera, and the
charge the battery for it (and to top
up the spare). The lens I selected was
already on the camera, and is the same
one that works so well when taking
pictures of trains - the Genuine
Nikkor 18 to 200mm zoom lens. It was
the replacement for the crappy Tamron
manufactured lens with roughly the
same specifications. The odd thing is
that I have a version of the Tamron
lens for my Canon cameras, and that
seems to work well. The Nikon version
never seems to get a sharp focus for
some unexplained reason.
The other thing I did was to
print out the timetables for the
vintage/older buses today. There are
about 20 buses, all in private
ownership, that will be taking part
today. They could be passing the end
of my road at about every 10 minutes
around lunchtime. Unfortunately the
weather forecast does not look good
for standing at the side of the road
with camera in hand. I'll have to suck
it and see - maybe I'll be home again
after half an hour in the rain.
Some of yesterday afternoon was
taken up with doing little more than
waiting for dinner time. I had a
special meal lined up, although, in
the end, it was not that special. It
was more little spare ribs, but this
time they came from Aldi instead of
Tesco. One big difference is that this
time I used all the sachet of sauce,
but I did not follow the cooking
instructions. I started the cooking
much earlier in the afternoon, and the
cooking smells made me want 6pm to
arrive as quickly as possible.
It was mid afternoon when I
gave the ribs, which were all stuck
together, their recommended 25 minutes
in the oven. They were ready long
before I was going to eat them, and I
left them in the oven to cool down,
and protected from flies and stuff. 15
minutes before I was going to eat the
ribs I poured the sauce, which was
mustard flavour rather than the
"Chinese" flavour of the Tesco
version, over the ribs and gave them
another 10 minutes in the oven to get
the sauce dryer and stickier.
They were quite nice like that,
although I should have broken the big
chunk up into individual ribs. Maybe
the only difference would have been
getting less sauce in my beard when I
picked bits of it up to gnaw on
several ribs still stuck together. It
was nice-ish, but I think I will get
the Tesco version the next time I want
spare ribs. For dessert I had some
Dubai style chocolate ice cream - an
ice cream that seems to have a decent,
or useful, amount of Sodium Alginate
in it - which had the desired result
this morning.
I was going to spend much of
the evening watching TV, because I had
nothing better to do, but I slightly
different. Those utter, utter bastards
at Sky TV, who have loads of sports
channels (or so I imagine) decided to
replace the early evening Star Treks
with bloody football on Sky Mix.
Fortunately the E4 channel were
showing some repeats of repeats of old
Simpsons episodes.
Even they ran out, and I
laid down to read for almost an hour
before watching QI and Have I Got News
For You until 10pm (or was it 11pm ?).
I then went to bed, but before that I
made sure the heater was on low, and
the thermostat set high enough to keep
my bedroom mildly warm. I picked up my
book, and then put it down again
without opening it. I seemed to fall
asleep in a few minutes.
I had a very uneventful sleep -
almost. I remember having a dream, and
it seemed enjoyable, but not a thing
about it seems to have stuck in my
memory. I do remember getting up
at about 1am (possibly 2am) and going
for a pee. That was semi memorable for
two reasons. One was that it took my a
few moments to realise that it wasn't
time to get up, and the other was that
I seemed to pee about a full pint.
A couple of hours later I did
the same - including thinking it was
time to get up until I checked the
clock. I can't recall having any
trouble getting back to sleep. I think
the next time I woke up it could have
been time to get up, but I went back
to bed to try and sleep more. I almost
managed. It felt like that for almost
an hour I was drifting in and out of
sleep. I should have finally
woken up bright and fresh, but it took
me over half an hour before I stopped
yawning (and having just written that
I am fighting another big yawn !).
It was handy to have another
big pee when I got up (and a smaller
one soon after). When I weighed myself
after I seemed to have stopped peeing
(although I still have not had a poo)
I found my weight was quite good. I
found I had lost 300gm since yesterday
morning, although I am the same weight
as I was on the first of this month.
My weight has been bobbin up and down
like this since the last week or so of
last month. It is bad there has been
no real cumulative weight loss, but
good that my weight has been
effectively stable for that length of
time.
The chocolate ice cream I ate
yesterday was not a great deal, but it
seems the Sodium Alginate in it worked
well enough to block the uptake of
sugar in it. This morning my blood
glucose is better than hoped for. All
readings are in the light green on my
spreadsheet, but that is not as good
as dark green. The latter seems a rare
treat this year. The Contour meter
read 7.8mmol/l. That is just a tad too
high to be called excellent, but
"good" would be fair enough. The
GlocoRX meter read a slightly better
7.5mmol/l, and that is spot on my
current (self set) target, and so
maybe better than good. The new meter,
the GlucoFix read 7.9mmol/l. That is
slightly odd because that meter often
has the lowest reading, but it is
still a good reading - just about.
As I write this I should be
doing my bus spotting because it has
stopped raining and the sun is
shining. However the sky still looks
very grey, and I doubt the rain has
stopped for long. I still intend to
have a lie down, and then have a
shower, and wash my hair before going
out. There is a tiny possibility I may
go to a gig tonight, and so washing my
hair is definitely needed. I don't
know when I'll start bus spotting or
even if I will take a ride on any of
the buses, although I would like to. I
have a mad idea of going to
Blackheath, and taking photos of some
of the buses while they are crossing
the heath. Such pictures may look good
if there was some sunshine, but it
seems a stupid idea if it is tipping
down with rain !
