Yesterday was not a very
productive day, and I think I felt
mildly depressed. It is difficult
to know if my lack of doing little
of anything useful caused the
depression, or if it was the
depression that stopped me doing
much. Oddly enough, although
depressed, I still seemed to be
mildly happy, and even relaxed
about everything.
With hindsight I made the
same mistake yesterday as I have
made many times in the past. That
mistake was to decide to do some
laundry before I had washed my
hair and had a shower. I do all my
laundry by hand since my old
washing packed up 15 or more years
ago, and the second hand one I was
given didn't seem to work. I use
two big builder buckets in the
bath do do my laundry, and once
one of those big buckets is full
of water with clothes floating
around in it, it can't be simply
taken out and put aside so I can
use the bath tub for personal
washing.
I could, and almost did
consider just a damp flannel wash
so I could go out for a walk. In
fact, for a walk it really
wouldn't matter if I was a bit
stinky because I would never be
near strangers for more than a
minute or less. However, I do very
much prefer to be clean when there
is a chance of being smelled by
other people. The fact that I
didn't want to go out while
possibly smelly, seemed like a
good excuse to be lazy, and that
is what I mostly did. Although I
did get as far as doing the first
rinse of my laundry, the next two
rinses and the fabric conditioner
are still waiting for me this
morning !
Apart from preparing and
eating some food, and a lot of
reading, I didn't really do much
yesterday. My reading was of Spike
Milligan's 7th war memoirs book,
and it is a bit of page turner.
Lots of memories on one page mean
you have to turn the page to find
out what happened, and what
happened next. This 7th book is
less to do with the war, which had
finished by then, and a lot more
about how The Goon Show started
from simple roots.
At around midday I stopped
for lunch. The main part of my
lunch was two "tiger rolls" with
ham, salad, cheese and mustard. I
guess there could have been
healthier options, but I enjoyed
those roll. I followed then with
some more of the "Made In
Scotland" Mackies ice cream. I
still think it is rather bland,
and the downside of that is that
it encouraged me to eat more of
it. I expected the tub to last at
least 4 or 5 days, but I finished
it yesterday after only about 3
days.
There is not a lot to say
about my afternoon. It was mostly
a continuation of the morning, but
with at least one fairly long
snooze extra. So the next thing of
note must be dinner. It was cold
lamb shish kebab - the last bit of
my takeaway from a couple of days
ago. The entire order did seem
expensive, but it did do three
meals, and so maybe it was not
that expensive after all (although
still costly compared to the
ingredients used).
It was after dinner (main
course) that I finished off the
last of the Mackies ice cream. I
also had a chunk of very rich
Madeira cherry cake. There was
probably more calories and sugar
in that one chunk of cake than
there was in the whole of the lamb
shish kebab. Unfortunately it did
have consequences. Later in the
evening I know I had something
else to eat - theoretically a
snack. I can't remember exactly
what it was, but I fear it
included more cake !
Saturday night is typically
a rather poor time for TV
entertainment, but by hopping
channels I seem to find enough to
watch to keep my amused until
11pm. The last two programmes were
the same as the usual weekday
evening fare of QI and Have I Got
News For You. It seemed very late
when I got into bed, but I needed
to do some quite reading to relax
me enough for sleep.
My sleep was about the same
as many nights recently -
generally good, and with only a
few interruptions for getting up
for a pee. I know I had several
dreams last night, but only part
of one has left any memory. I was
with some one and I can't remember
any names, and while I think it
might have been a female, I have
no definite idea of my companions
gender. All I do know is that we
felt thirsty, and fancied a pint.
The nearest pub was a bit
like The Railway Tavern (then The
Copperfield, and now The Catford
Bridge Tavern), Maybe one
difference is that it was a two
bar pub, and there was no
connecting door between the bars.
The first bar room we went in was
a very big room, and most of the
tables and chairs had been moved
towards the wall. That left a
large space in the middle, and we
found out it was used as a kids
play area until the evening (and
only on a week day).
The bar was stills serving
for the benefit of mainly mums and
dads. It was too noisy in there so
we went outside and into the much
smaller bar at the back. At this
point my memory gets very hazy. I
can remember checking the hand
pumps on the bar, and found one
had a beer that seemed familiar,
and yet there was something odd
about it. That oddness is
something I just can't remember.
It might have been a variation on
the name, of it might have had
some unusual ingredients for a
traditional ale. It may have been
significant that as soon as I
tasted it I woke up. I don't
recall it tasting nasty, and I
don't think the taste, although
imaginary, stayed on my tongue for
a few seconds after waking up.
I woke up only about 20 or
so minutes before what I thought
would be a good time to get up,
and so I did get up. As usual, the
first thing I did was go to the
toilet. I did a fairly big pee,
but despite expecting to have a
poo, it was just wind. No poo was
a shame because when I weighed
myself I found I had put on
another 300gm. Although I am still
only 600gm more than my average
for the whole of this month (so
far) it still feels annoying. I
put the blame on lack of exercise.
My blood glucose was also
up, but still pretty good. I got
readings of 7.4, 7.2, and
7.9mmol/l. Although all
three readings could be described
as good (or maybe good enough) the
average was higher than all but
three daily averages so far this
month. Once again it tends to
point to lack of fresh air and
exercise (and mild boredom can't
be ignored). My blood pressure
This morning my blood pressure is
very good, at the first attempt I
got 114/50 with a pulse rate of 61
bpm. The pulse rate is a bit
higher than I would like, but I
think it is still very acceptable.
(looking back over the last couple
of months, it is within one or two
of my averages).
There are two things that
limit me today. The first is that
I have to finish the laundry I
started yesterday. It should only
take 10 of 15 minutes, and once it
is done I could have a shower, and
possibly wash my hair - except
that I can't really. Today I am
expecting a delivery by Amazon.
Amazingly enough it is only just
gone 11am on a Sunday, and they
are already reported to be out for
delivery. That doesn't help a lot
because they could be delivered in
an hour or three, or they could be
delivered this evening. Unless any
estimate appears to give a
possible delivery time, it will
just be an unknown random time
some time today. I hope it
is early enough for me to at least
have a shower before Jodie pops
over for another Sunday beer
tasting session.
