Lockdown day 58

08:19 BST

Once the early morning cloud had cleared, yesterday was a hot and sunny day. The afternoon temperature was around 25° C, and possibly slightly more. It was just like summer - even to the extent that it didn't get that cool in the evening.
another hot and sunny day
The sky was blue at first light, and the temperature was supposed to be 15° C (I haven't checked that, but it certainly doesn't feel any cooler). By this afternoon, after non stop sunshine, the temperature should rise to 27° C ! Today it is summer, and tomorrow may see a summer thunderstorm or two - although it won't be quite like summer thunderstorms. By tradition they usually happen in the late afternoon after a build up of sticky heat through the day (or at least that is how I remember it). Tomorrows thunderstorms may start at 8am - even if the current prediction is only for an 18% chance of rain. By 3pm it may be all over, the sun should come out, and it may be 26° C.

double hill climb

I think I may have decided that I would definitely be going out for a long walk yesterday before I went to bed the previous night. Not only that, but I had decided I wanted a change of scenery, but most of all to do a bit of hill climbing.

Having a shower, and washing my hair provided a sufficient delay to let the clouds dissipate, and the sun to come out. I set out on my walk unusually early at 10.30am, and by then the day was warm, and starting to warm up even more. I would say it would soon be sweaty weather, but the air seemed fairly dry, and my low blood glucose level meant I was less prone to sweat, plus I sweat a lot less when moving. Even when going uphill, and for me it is quite a walk up to the top of Mountsfield Park from the middle of Catford, I only sweated a bit - enough to get sweat in my eyes, but not enough to leave puddles behind me.

I felt breathing heavily, but not actually panting at the top, and I felt good enough to go down, and go to the top again by a different route. This all sounds wonderfully idyllic, but at usual it was my feet that let me down. However, on this occasion it was most definitely a poor choice of footwear that caused me (and is still causing me) a lot of discomfort. It was because I wasn't going over rugged terrain, or messing about on the river, that I wore a pair of Converse trainers - rather more lightweight than my boot. The trouble was some damage they sustained some time in the past.
ruined heel
This is the view looking at the heel area inside my white Converse trainers - they seemed appropriate for a hot sunny day, and they might have been if they were not old, and beginning to break up. I don't know if some time in the past I managed to get a flint stuck in there, and it cut the surface material, but that is what it looks like. On the other hand I am sure I would have remember blood if a sharp flint got caught under my heel. How it got started will remain a mystery, but the foam underneath the outer covering is disintegrating, and after two miles that heel was getting very sore. The other heel also shows this damage, but it is not quite as bad, and so the discomfort was less, but both heels feel sore even this morning.

Despite the pain from my heels, the walk had some positive points. I took my pulse oximeter with me for the first time ever. At the top of the hill I checked my blood oxygen saturation, and for a second it was 97%, but then flicked to 98%. That is about normal for me, and is considered to be a good figure. It made me wonder why I needed to breathe so deeply, but I guess if that is what my brain thinks is the "thermostat" setting, then it would increase my breathing to keep things constant. My pulse rate at the top was 105 - the highest I have ever seen until I did the next hill climb and it hit 117. I was rather pleased about how quickly it went down again once I was on level ground.
view from the top
Here's better view than the one in the video of the view from the top. In the distance are the Croydon and Crystal Palace TV transmitter masts. On the right of the picture, above the white building, is a building with what looks like a crinkly top. That is the top of the 4 (or 5) story library/town hall building in the centre of Catford.
totem pole
                                  type "thing"
On my way to the top I followed the nature trail path, and in one corner I saw this strange looking carved thing. In some ways it is like a native American Indian totem pole, but the design makes me think it could be African. If there is any sign that explains it, it is lost in the undergrowth.
the path
                                  splits
Having made it to the top of the park I came down through the middle of the park to roughly where I had first entered the park. My intention was to take the path to the left of the entrance instead of the right. It has been ages, maybe even 50 years, since I had taken this path, and I was not aware there was a fork in it. I decided to follow the left fork because that was the path I did not recognise. There is a fair chance it is a comparatively new path because after a while it turns into a more mud and gravel sort of path. It was at the top of this path that my pulse rate hit 117. It is quite a pretty path that is bordered by trees for most of it's length.
mini
                                  library
I have seen this before, but yesterday was the first time I have stopped to take a photo. It is on Hither Green Lane, and is a sort of mini library. I presume anyone os free to add or take books from it. I can't see what the missing letters are. It may say "STREET" ....."Library Street" sounds a bit odd, and so maybe my guess is wrong.

By the time I had passed this mini library my heels were getting very uncomfortable, but I decided to grit my teeth, and continue following the vague route I had planned. I was not sure how long it would be, but I was hoping it would be at least 3 miles, and thankfully it was (with a third of a mile to spare), and without having to think of ways to extend the route at the last minute.
window box
Before I went back indoors I stopped to take a couple of pictures of my window boxes. The pair of boxes (actually re-used, rather stained, "tupperware" type food storage boxes) in front of the window nearest my front door is really doing stuff now. For ages nothing seemed to happen, and I was sure that the plants were root bound and dying, but now lots of flowers are appearing. It is starting to look like what I hoped for.

                                  2
This is one of three boxes in front of the middle window of the bay windows. The box on the far right (not in the picture) does not look good at all. All the plants seem to be dying, but this one, in the foreground, is now finally coming to life. There is one blue/purple flower that is facing the wrong way, and one close examination there are other bids that could flower soon. This is not the "riot of colour" I was originally hoping for, but it is enough to make it all seem worthwhile, and more importantly sets a goal to aim for next year when I hope I have a better idea of what I am doing.
don't piss
                                  here
This was actually the first picture I took on my walk, but I thought I would leave it until last. It is a sign on a painted over, but plate glass window of a solicitors office in what was once a shop. It is 30ft up a side street that is little more than 50ft from the Catford Weatherspoons pubs.... it probably says something about that pub !

Apart from my sore feet, I was feeling good when I got home. I am feeling very comfortable about these 3 miles (and a bit) walks, and even the last 4 mile walk didn't really tax me to the limit. I still meant that after preparing my photos and video I lay on my bed to relax, and had a siesta. By 4pm I started feeling restless again. If my feet had not felt so sore I might have gone for a second walk, and I had a masochistic idea that I might see how I felt if I started to walk towards the top of Blythe Hill Fields. It might not be quite as high as Mountsfield Park, but there is something in the nature of the hill climb that makes it feel harder.

Despite thinking about it, I couldn't actually face it, but I still wanted to do something useful. What I actually did was to do a job that I have been putting off for ages  - cleaning the chromed stand of my glass dining room table. I have to admit I have done little work in the back room for ages now because being on the north side of the house it is often cold and gloomy in there. Yesterday, particularly compared to the sunlit front room, it was still gloomy, but it was not cold.

I used some spray cleaner that contained bleach to get all the muck off the legs of that table stand. As I sprayed it I could feel the bleach hot the back of my throat, and I developed a typical Covid-19 dry cough. How Trump reckons drinking bleach cure you of Covid-19 is a mystery to me. Fortunately my dry cough went away again very quickly, and was not to return until I ate some particularly hot and tasty chilli sauce ! With the stand clean and shining I fitted some felt pads to support the glass (originally they were clear glass suckers, but they had gone brown, and a few were missing). Then I lifted that heavy sheet of glass onto the stand, and the table is ready for use again - it's just a shame about the amount of scratches on it - I must invest in some table clothes if I ever feed anyone at that table in the future.

I didn't know what to have for my dinner last night. I have a selection of ingredients I could have cooked up something from, but I had a yearning for a shish kebab. It seemed like it was time to try Deliveroo again (while I still get free delivery for another couple of week as a promotion for being a new customer). Once again I tried a kebab shop who was not litsed on Just Eat's web site. Once again I was disappointed. The grilled chicken was good, and the chilli sauce was excellent, but the salad was a big let down - they seemed to have not included any. I am very sure I ticked the check box to include salad in the order, but I suppose I may have unticked a pre-ticked check box. I am not sure I like Deliveroo's web site.

I also ordered some "spicy wings". Once again they turned out to be battered rather than grilled, but I supposed they didn't specify they were grilled. The worst thing was that I definitely didn't order them with chips, but they came with chips - albeit only about 6 of them ! I did try one of those wings, and they didn't seem nice - sort of slimy as if not properly cooked. I will give them a few minutes in the microwave before eating them (possibly) for lunch today.

In the end my dinner was smaller than intended, but combined with not really eating anything after a big(ish) lunch, it seems that I have most definitely lost a few hundred grams this morning. On the other hand my blood glucose was not as low as hoped for, 7.1mmol/l, but at least it was lower than yesterday's 7.3mmol/l. As I have mentioned many times in the past, a figure of 6.xx would be preferable, but low sevens is fine.

When I went to bed I noticed that for a while my right knew joint was aching. It either went away, or I found a more comfortable position. I ended up sleeping rather well. I left the window open all night, and I think it was just before dawn that I woke up feeling cold, and decided to pull the duvet over me (it was too hot for it last night). I think I feel pretty good this morning apart from two things. My heels are still a bit sore, and while I have been sitting here typing my right knee has got more and more painful.

I have just walked to and from the toilet, and my knee has almost stopped aching. I think with a couple of Paracetamols I should be fine to go out for some exercise today. I think I want to go up to Blythe Hill Fields today. Once I get there I can think of a short and long way home. I guess I'll have to see how I feel at the time. Before that I need a shower, and before I have that I must remember to turn the water temperature down a bit. It is getting rather hot since we have had this hot sunshine !
