It was warm and bright yesterday. There was
less continuous sunshine than the more optimistic
forecasts predicted, and maybe "extended sunny
periods" might describe it better. Even when the
sun ducked behind a cloud it was still bright and
cheery. By late afternoon/early evening the
temperature rose to 27° C, and then only very
slowly cooled off overnight.
I am not so sure that the
temperature did fall to as low as 15° C at 7am
this morning. For the first time in ages I had
my bedroom window open all night, and I had
been sleeping with nothing covering me all
night. Some the breeze coming through the
window did feel a bit fresh, but it is
currently rather nice after just coming out
from under a hot (very warm) shower. A bit
earlier it seemed to be a lot brighter out,
but now reality has conformed to the forecast
- or would have done if the forecast had not
been revised, and now showing sunny intervals
at the moment. This latest revision only shows
full sunshine for 4 and 5pm. The rest of the
time should just feature sunny
spells/intervals/periods. It should remain
dry, and once again it should end up almost as
warm as yesterday - around 25° C. Tomorrow is
predicted to be a lot cooler with hardly any
sunshine, maybe none, and with a good chance
of a couple of rain showers.
Yesterday started with a bit of a
frenzy, and then changed to relaxation. The
first thing I did was to go to the corner shop
to buy the two new magazines I was expecting
to be waiting for me. I then went to
Poundland to get more emergency supplies for
when the shops are off limits to me from the
24th July (because I refuse to wear a face
mask). I am not always convinced that the
small selection of food they sell in there is
all that cheap, and I feel sure that they have
a lot of stuff that can be bought cheaper from
supermarkets, but I know that some of it is
cheap and/or not seen in other shops.
I bought three packs of sugar free
vanilla wafers in there. I know that Iceland
usually has them, but Iceland has little long
life food that isn't frozen (and my freezer is
not big enough to keep much food in it).
Poundland are currently doing 1.25 litre
bottles of Pepsi Max for £1, and that is a
little cheaper per litre than supermarkets. I
bought 4 bottles of that plus a bottle of
sugar free Vimto squash. It is quite nice, and
I don't think I have seen it anywhere else. I
also bought some tinned food, but not much
because I suspect it is more expensive than
from Aldi.
After rushing home with a very heavy
rucksack I did some gardening. Most
importantly I water the garden, but I did
transplant some seedlings to a big planter to
put on my front windowsill (the last window
boxes had dried out too much, and the few
flowers that seemed alive I planted in the
garden. Some revived, and are only now
starting to look healthy again. What I didn't
do was to do any weeding. It is something I am
going to have to put my mind to sooner or
later.
The reason I didn't do any weeding was
because I was getting myself ready to go out
for some walking exercise. I had decided not
to plan my walk beyond setting out to the
River Pool Linear Park, and see where my feet
took me. I wanted to walk at least 2 miles,
but I could have ended up walking 6 miles,
although the latter was fairly unlikely. It
all went wrong when I check my email and found
I was expecting a small parcel delivery from
Amazon.
The parcel was actually coming via
Royal Mail, and being so small I expected it
to come by my normal postman. That would have
meant that it would probably arrive around
midday, and maybe I might still have gone out
if it had, but it did not arrive until 3.30pm
in a plain unmarked white Transit van. I
assume the driver was temporary staff with his
own van. Anyway, that didn't matter, I got my
parcel in my grubby hands, and could go back
to what I was doing - reading the two
magazines I had bought.
I knew it would be fatal to start
reading those magazines because I would not
want to put them down once started. In theory
there was still hours of sunshine left, and I
could still have gone for a walk late in the
evening, but I didn't. I don't really know
what was the biggest influence - being
engrossed in reading those magazines, or just
habit. By 4pm I would usually have finished a
walk, and even in the past, when I could
travel to go for walks along the seaside, I
would usually be on the train home by 4pm
(quite often getting quite near home).
I will admit I took a few breaks from
reading to do other stuff like eating. I think
my lunch was rice crackers with cheese....or
was that the previous day ? I'm pretty sure I
had a punnet of piccolo cherries at some point
yesterday. It might have been lunch. What I do
remember very clearly was that some of the
cherries were not very ripe, and tasted quite
tart. That was possibly a good thing for my
blood glucose.
One diversion yesterday afternoon
was to "remaster" a video I had shot
in The Black Cat on 19th November
2016. It features The Life Of Brian
with Miranda, Angela's daughter, on
lead vocals singing a Pretenders
song "Night In My Veins". I had come
across it while looking for
something else, and I thought I
could improve on my first edit of
it. It was videoed at a time when
the stage lights in the Black Cat
were totally insane. No one knew how
to control them, and they seemed to
be stuck in "Rave" mode. I decided
the video looked better in black and
white, but the strobing of the
lights is still very annoying.
My dinner
was inspired by two things. The first was
to keep it simple, and the second was that
some skinless chicken thighs I had in the
fridge were a day past their use by date,
and the fish that I was going to have
still had a few days left. I grilled the
skinless/boneless chicken thighs with some
assorted spices, and they turned out to be
fairly tasty (although a charcoal grill
would have made them a lot tastier). I had
4 grilled thighs with nothing more than
salad leaves and too much mayonnaise
(again too much !).
Although I watched a couple of
hours of TV last night, it didn't seem
long before I was on my bed reading again.
It was warm last night, and as I said
above, when talking about the weather, I
ended up sleeping uncovered with the
window open last night. It was just like
it was summer again ! I seemed to sleep
rather well, although I think a fair bit
was light sleep - light enough to be aware
of dreaming a lot, but not light enough to
make remembering any of the dreams in
enough detail to describe any of them. I
know at least one featured my dad. I
expect that means something, but I don't
think I'll speculate what.
This morning I have definitely lost
a bit of weight. The previous two mornings
had hints that it was happening, but now I
am sure of it. If it could continue at the
current rate for at least a week, and
preferably a fortnight, I could get back
to what I had achieved earlier, and then
maybe a tiny bit more. Less good was my
blood glucose. at 8.2mmol/l it was higher
than I hoped, but it could have been far
worse.
A lot of time has passed since I
started writing, and I don't think there
has been a single sunny spells. Well
hopefully they will start soon. Once I
have finished this writing I will get
dressed for the great outdoors, and get
walking. It is not that warm yet, but
getting warmer all the time, and so I
reckon I will wear my shorts today. In
theory I can walk further in shorts, but
that is probably just mumbo jumbo, and now
I realise it, it probably won't work.
We'll just have to see if I walk as far as
Lower Sydenham, or turn back sooner.
