Lockdown day 130 Shopping embargo day 8 08:43 BST As correctly predicted by both the Met Office and the BBC (Meteogroup) forecasts, yesterday was hot and sunny. I didn't pay close attention to my thermometers, but I think the prediction of 27° C couldn't have been far off the mark. I think today it is worth
comparing the Met Office and BBC forecasts.
Both forecasts tell the same story -
almost. There seems some doubt after 4pm, but some
sunny periods instead of non stop sunshine, won't be
that bad. It seems weird that the Met Office pops in
some heavy rain at 6pm. With the temperature climbing
to a steamy 33, or even 34° C it could brew up a
thunderstorm at 6pm ! I expect to see quite a few
revisions to the forecast during the morning to bring
the forecasts closer in line to reality. In the hours
since I took these screenshots both forecast have had
small revisions. The most significant change is to the
Met Office (top screenshot). The 60% chance of heavy
rain at 6pm has been reduced to a 40% chance of light
rain. It seems to be moving closer to the BBC forecast
now. There is some disagreement about the amount of
sunshine tomorrow. There should be at least sunny
spells in the morning, and the afternoon temperature
should be a very warm 25° C. Apart from it probably
being dry, that is about all that can be said about
tomorrow at this time in the morning.I took yesterday morning fairly easy. I didn't want to rush around too much and overheat, but I wasn't idle. I did several little bits of cleaning and tidying, and preparing things for an afternoon boozing with friends. At lunchtime I was caught between two different trains of thought. One was that it would be a good idea to make sure my stomach was well lined before embarking on a boozing session. There was also the opposing view that I didn't want to eat on a very warm day because it would make me feel even hotter. At just after 3pm the boozing session started, and it was most enjoyable. A fuller description, with a couple of pictures, plus details of the rest of the day, and the first thoughts this morning, can be read on my full archive page for today. |

Lockdown day 129 Shopping embargo day 7 08:08 BST It turned that the BBC (Meteogroup) weather forecast for yesterday was more accurate than the Met Office forecast. In fact it was spot on ! There were sunny spells through the whole day yesterday, and the temperature was a very comfortable 21° C. I'll admit it is a wild guess, but I think the longest period without sunshine was just 15 minutes. I'm not sure I would agree that 7am only had sunny periods, but from 8am onwards, the Met Office forecast (screenshot above) agrees with the BBC's offering. Today should see non stop sunshine, and at 27° C it is going to be very warm. Tomorrow gets even better. Once again the two forecasters are in agreement that it is going to be hot. Possibly as high as 33° C ! The only thing that has changed in the latest revision concerns this coming Monday. In the screenshot above it is shown as light cloud with light rain, and 20° C. It is now shown as a black cloud with heavy rain falling from it. amd just 19° C. Summer didn't last long did it ? My beer delivery was originally scheduled for between 10:22 and 11:22 yesterday, but it actually arrive early at about 10am. With my beer delivered I was free to do anything. That could have included a walk, and possibly a walk to see if I could spot Angela in the pub, but I decided to stay in and do some stuff at home. That stuff included doing two lots of laundry, and a load of work in the garden. At the end of the afternoon I was feeling tired, and didn't want to prepare my own dinner. I ordered a takeway despite having blown my months budget twice over this month. You can read about my day, and see pictures of my beer on my full archive page for today. It also includes what I have done this morning, and what I plan to do later. |

Lockdown day 128 Shopping embargo day 6 08:28 BST I think yesterday's weather may have even been better than shown in the morning revisions to the weather forecast. The best forecast I saw said sunny periods in the morning, and sunny periods in the evening. I may be mistaken, but I feel sure there was some sunny intervals in the afternoon too, although maybe not enough to say that yesterday was a sunny day. It was another dry and mild day with the afternoon temperature just hitting 20° C. There was a choice of weather forecasts this morning, but I decided to stick with the Met Office forecast for my screenshot even though the BBC Meteogroup forecast showed a nicer day. It has been sunny all morning with few clouds in the blue sky, and that is rather better than any of the forecasts predicted. There is more cloud in the sky than there was, and it seems likely that the full sunshine will give way to sunny intervals soon. With luck they will continue until midday, or 8pm if you believe the BBC forecast. Maybe there will be more sunny periods later in the afternoon if we are lucky. Both forecast say the afternoon temperature will rise to 21° C, or pretty much the same as the last few days. Tonight should be less cold than last night (it is still a bit cool now !), and that will prime the day for a hot sunny day. It will be like summer again. 25° C is forecast for tomorrow, and maybe even 32° C on Friday ! I started yesterday morning with little idea of what I was going to do. The only definite thing is that I was going to stay at home in case my beer delivery arrived. It didn't, but I did get a message from DHL, the couriers, to say it would be delivered today. I now know it will be delivered today between 09:22 and 10:22. Yesterday ended up a day when I did quite a few small and quick jobs, and three more significant jobs. I describe all that can be described, with a couple of pictures, alongside my thoughts about today, in my full archive page for today. |

28th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 127 Shopping embargo day 5 08:52 BST I don't think a simple weather forecast can capture the complexity of how the real weather has been, and particularly yesterday. It turned out that the BBC weather forecast came closer to reality than the Met Office forecast I have been using lately. The BBC forecast light rain through the whole day. The reality was that here were a few light showers, but mostly there just seemed to be frequent falls of rain that was so light and misty that it was only felt on the face, and never seen. It took a good hour before something like the top of a wheelie bin looked damp - and that was assuming the rain wasn't delayed by an all too brief sunny spells. They were in very short supply, but they happened, and only the Met Office forecast managed to include one sunny spell in it's forecast. Only a brief peak of 21° C was forecast, and 19° C was possibly more representative of much of the day. It sometimes felt cool, and sometimes hot - reasons coming up soon ! Today should feature more sunshine than yesterday, and in the latest revision to the forecast, more sunshine than shown in the screenshot above. It is bright and sunny right now - which is shown in the latest revision of the forecast. If things proceed as per the forecast the sunshine will soon be replaced by sunny intervals until midday. There may well be more in the early evening, but the afternoon may be fairly dull. It should be a dry day, and the temperature will, once again, be neither hot or cold at 20° C. At the moment tomorrow is being shown as being the same as today. I started yesterday thinking I would not want to go out while the weather looked to be so dull - which was not an accurate forecast at the time. I only had a few vague ideas of what I might do, but they were only in error in so much as I underestimated what I would end up doing. I started out doing a bit of gardening, and then, after a break to get my breath back, I did a load of housework. I describe all the garden work, and the housework, plus all the usual stuff about yesterday, and this morning, in my full archive page for today (which also includes several pictures taken of my progress in the garden). |
Monday
27th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 126 Shopping embargo day 4 07:27 BST Yesterday was mostly overcast, but there were some sunny periods, and there was some rain, but very little of the latter. I was actually hoping for more (for the garden) but the few showers I observed very very light, and very brief. The temperature reached 21° C in the afternoon. The difference between the Met Office forecast, and the Meteogroup forecast (via the BBC) is profound. Meteogroup reckon there could be light rain showers almost all day, and from the look of the clouds I think their prediction may be closer to reality. There was certainly no heavy rain at 6am this morning. In fact I think it was gone 7a, when the forst light rain fell. The most recent revision to the Met Office forecast now says light rain between 6am and 9am. They reckon it will be dry after that. The BBC still say non stop light rain from morning to 6pm. Both forecasters agree that today will reach 21° C again. Both forecasters say tomorrow will start sunny, but that it will cloud over at 1pm. The temperature might be a degree less than today despite the sunshine. I didn't feel good yesterday. On further reflection I think I now blame it on three things. Firstly I may have had a hangover. It was not of the painful variety, but just that feeling of the weight of the world pressing down on you. I've just remembered, I did have a light headache in the morning, and so there was some pain, but it was light, and just faded away at some unremembered time. The second thing was some sort of digestive complaint. I am not sure what to call it. It was like constipation in a way except I did seem to go quite normally in the morning. I think it was the double Iceland curry ready meals that decided to make a quick exit around lunchtime. Although it had caused no discomfort as such, I did feel lighter after I had been to the toilet. Probably the final thing....No, I've got that wrong. There were two final things, although in some ways related. There was the traditional Sunday blues, and the overcast weather blues. No individual thing was particularly bad, but the combination of four things (at the latest count) seemed to be enough to leave me feeling listless. By midday I was getting bored being bored, and I ended up doing more gardening then I imagined I would. It was bth hard work, and sort of satisfying if you ignore some negative reactions. There are some pictures with descriptions of some of what I did in the garden, plus a commentary of most of my day, and what I think of the weather this morning, plus how it limits me, all in my full archive page for today. |
Sunday
26th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 125 Shopping embargo day 3 09:44 BST It wasn't as wet as the weather forecast first predicted yesterday. The morning only featured a few light showers. The afternoon initially had barely detectable light rain, but by mid afternoon the showers were more noticeable. It was later in the evening that there were some really heavy falls of rain, but I was not aware on any lightning as had been forecast. I feel sure I can remember the sun coming out for a few minutes among all that dampness. With an afternoon temperature of 20° C it was comfortable even if it was difficult to describe it as warm. The forecast in the screenshot above seems to be fantasy. I don't recall any sunshine earlier, although the sun is making a valiant effort to try and squeeze through a crack in the clouds as I write this. The latest revision doesn't seem to be available because like most government run web sites it is crap, and seems to have failed. The last I saw said there would be one shower sometime this afternoon, and that it would be overcast for most of the day, but the sun might appear now and then. At 21° C it should be a little warmer than yesterday. Tomorrow is likely to be another mostly overcast day, and probably a similar temperature. It is not until towards the end of next week, perhaps next Thursday, when the weather turns summery again. Yesterday morning was not as wet as I thought it might be, and by midday I thought it looked dry enough outside to give my new strimmer a test run. My first impression was that it was harder to use than expected. After a while it starts to feel quite heavy and trying to get the cutting height right was hard. It is going to take some practice to get it right, but it was certainly easier than using shears. I spent an hour or so in the garden, and achieved a fair bit more than just strimming the lawn. Later in the afternoon Jodie visited with some beers, and stayed a fair bit later than I was expecting. That delayed my dinner, and that, in turn would have an affect on my sleep. The whole story, including pictures, and some ideas on why I feel tired and/or depressed this morning, is all written in my full archive page for today. |
Saturday
25th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 124 Shopping embargo day 2 08:16 BST The weather forecast got it wrong yesterday. Instead of it being a very dull, bland, and overcast day, it was actually quite bright ! The start of the morning was admittedly dull, but by mid to late morning big holes were opening up in the clouds revealing bright blue patches. At that time there did seem to be a cloud covering the sun a lot of them time, but early afternoon saw some nice periods of sunshine. That continues into the evni9ng. It was a warm afternoon, 23° C, and the evening felt like a nice summers evening. The forecast has changed a bit since I took the screenshot above, but main features have not changed much. There was some rain earlier this morning, but it seems to be dry again now, and the sun is doing it's best to burn a hole through the clouds. It may not make it because there is a lot of cloud up there. I think the forecast is best read to say there will be more showers today, and probably when you least expect them. Both the BBC and Met Office reckon the afternoon will be wetter, and that there will probably be some thunder and lightning tonight - the BBC reckon there will be more than the Met Office. It seems like it will be a slightly cool day with the latest revision to the forecast saying a high of just 19° C. Tomorrow maybe mostly overcast with a possibility of a short sunny spells, and a bigger chance of a couple of showers later in the day. The spare strimming wire, for my new strimmer, that I mentioned yesterday, actually turned up mid morning. That left me free to go out for a walk late in the morning. A day of rest had done wonders for all my aches and pains, and that just left a few scars to heal. Those scars, except for one I'll come to soon, had no bearing on my ability to walk, and so I went for what should have been a short walk. I didn't want to overdo it, and it was supposed to be more of a trial than a purposeful walk, but once I got going it seemed quite easy going. I walked 2.6 miles in all, and apart from a bloodied toe I was fine. I took a selection of pictures, and a bit of video on my walk. You can see them, plus read a description of the walk, and what I did for the rest of the day in my full archive page for today (which also includes my firth thoughts about today). |
Friday
24th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 123 Shopping embargo day 1 08:41 BST The sun put in a few appearances yesterday, but much of the day was overcast - usually only lightly overcast. It was better than mild, but only just warm day with an afternoon temperature of 22 to 24° C. The early weather forecast looks very bland. The latest revision is less bland - more periods of it being heavily overcast have been added ! There seems to be a 10% chance of rain at any time today, but that is so low it will probably be a dry day. The only positive thing is that it should be 22 or even 23° C. Tomorrow will probably be very similar except it might include some light rain showers. Yesterday was a day of rest - mostly. As I mentioned yesterday morning, I did go shopping in Iceland in the morning, and it was a painful walk there and back. After eating high calorie and high sugar ice cream for breakfast I managed to get my eating under control again - almost. Today I am relatively healthy. I describe my day, what I ate, how much I rested my legs, and how I did manage to do one productive thing, plus my thoughts and stuff this morning, in my full archive page for today. |
Thursday
23rd July 2020 |
Lockdown day 122 Shopping embago -1 days 09:54 BST Yesterday turned out to be better than my interpretation of the weather forecast. There seemed to be far more sunshine. There were sunny spells in the latter half of the morning, and long sunny spells in the afternoon (with only short gaps between them). At about 2pm it did seem to get quite cloudy for a while, and I thought I felt one or two drops of rain hot my face. It seemed to be a warm day, and the forecast 24° C was probably about right. I'm not sure if it was sunny at 6 and 7am this morning. I think it was more like it is now - bright but mostly overcast. The latest revision to the forecast allows for a few scattered sunny spells today, but more of the day may be overcast. It will probably stay dry this afternoon (when the clouds will be thicker), and the afternoon temperature should reach 24° C again. At the moment tomorrow is forecast to be 100% grey, but it should still reach 23° C. Yesterday morning started with a shopping trip to Tesco to stock up on more stuff to help extend my shopping embargo. Maybe with the help of buying some fresh stuff from outdoor market stalls, and maybe stuff bought online, I hope to be able to keep out of the shops for at least two months - starting tomorrow when face masks become compulsory in shops. With my shopping out the way I felt ready to tackle another long walk. It might have ended up even longer than 4.798 miles if I hadn't ended up in so much pain. My main target was to have a better look around Brookmill Park in Deptford. I managed to have two accidents in the park, the second involved tripping on a tree root, and that was the most damaging. I don't have pictures of my accidents, but I do describe them in more detail, plus there are some pictures and a video of my walk in my full archive page for today which also includes good and bad news about my health, and what I will probably do today. |
Wednesday
22nd July 2020 |
Lockdown day 121 Shopping embago -2 days 09:20 BST Yesterday was another nice day, but maybe not as nice as the previous two days. After a mostly sunny morning the afternoon was often duller, and overcast. It was still a warm day with the afternoon temperature 21° C or better. I could swear there was bright blue sky a couple of hours ago, but now reality has caught up with the forecast. It is lightly overcast, but there are often gaps in the cloud, and that leaves a bit of wiggle room for the sun to put in an occasional brief appearance. I've just checked the latest revision, and now it seems 1 and 2pm, and then 7 and 8pm could feature pure sunshine. In between there may be an occasional sunny spells. It could be quite warm today with the temperature reaching 24° C. Tomorrow maybe very dull, but it could still be quite warm at 22° C. Yesterday was not a good day. I allowed myself to relax too much during the morning. I had too many doubts about whether I was up to going for a walk. There were other things playing on my mind too. I ended up feeling quite depressed even when there was a microscopic bit of positive news. I did force myself to do a bit of housework, an even a bit of gardening, but I had no enthusiasm for it. Later on I had reason to think that the 5 mile walk I had done the previous day had tired me more than I realised. It was exceptional in that it was a very hilly walk, and probably took more effort than the 6 mile walk 2 days earlier that featured very little uphill walking. I have written a lot more about yesterday, and how today I feel good enough to have done some stuff already, with more planned, in my full archive page for today. |
Tuesday
21st July 2020 |
Lockdown day 120 07:21 BST Yesterday felt like summer again. It was bright and sunny most of the time, and even when only sunny spells were forecast it was long periods of sunshine and short periods without. The sun felt very warm even when the air temperature was under 20° C. By late afternoon the temperature had risen to 22° C. The sky is perfectly clear at the moment, and the sun is shining. It should continue to stay sunny until 1pm, and after that ther should be sunny intervals. The most recent revision to the forecast has added a few more hours of sunny periods in the afternoon compared to the screenshot above. It may not be as warm as yesterday, but with 21° C forecast it is going to be very close to it. Most of tomorrow may see sunny spells, and at a few times they may be very long sunny spells. It should be a several degrees warmer tomorrow with a prediction of 24° C by late afternoon. The first thing I did yesterday, after showering, and washing my hair, was to go shopping in Aldi. Once again I spent a lot of money, and lugged home some very heavy shopping. Not all that much of what I bought was long life food. Some of it was stuff that will be need to be used within the next week, but with my embargo on shopping starting on Friday, I will soon use up most of those things before I start on the long life stuff. I had a bit of a rest after getting home with my shopping. My plan was to get out for a walk mid morning, but a typical long meandering incoming phone call from Lee delayed me until midday. I wrote yesterday morning that I was only expecting to do a short walk after my extra long walk last Saturday. I actually walked five and a third miles. When I got home, slightly dehydrated, I was very happy when I saw what the scales said about my weight. There are pictures, plus two videos shot on my walk, and some commentary about my day, and my dilemma about what I will do today, all in my full archive page for today. |
Monday
20th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 119 07:20 BST Most of yesterday was grey and overcast. Sometimes it would be light grey, but it seemed that there was more dark grey. During the evening the cloud seemed to break up, and if the sun was not so low on the horizon it would have been a sunny end to the day. The morning did feature some rain, but it was very fine rain, and it took a long time to get the road to look damp. The wind seemed very fresh, but it didn't seem to feel more than slightly cool for most of the day. The highest temperature was probably early evening when it was supposed to reach just 19° C. A few small puddles visible this morning tell of some rain during the night, but it is dry now, and the sun is trying to shine. The BBC is very optimistic that it will be sunny all day, but the Met Office is a bit more pessimistic. The latest revision shows only sunny spells for the afternoon, but with the temperature heading for 22° C it should still be a nice day. Tomorrow will probably start sunny, but by the afternoon the cloud will start to thicken, and reduce the sunshine to sunny spells. Even those may fail by early evening. The current guess at tomorrow temperature is for a high of 21° C. The gloomy weather put me off doing any walking yesterday, and besides, after a 6 mile walk the previous day I thought I deserved a rest. However I did go out on another shopping trip in the morning. In the afternoon I did some laundry by hand, and I edited a video shot in 2016 that had not seen the light of day since I shot it. The video can be seen, and more about my day, and thoughts this morning, can be read in my full archive page for today. |
Sunday
19th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 118 06:54 BST Like the day before, yesterday was warm and bright. After a hesitant start the sun seemed to be shining most of the time. During the afternoon it sometimes seemed like half the sky was not blue, but I can't really remember any particular time when the sun went behind a cloud. Maybe it did it while my view of the sky was covered by trees or something. With an afternoon temperature of 25° C it was very pleasantly warm, and it continued as a very mild night. Almost no sunshine is expected today according to this very early edition of the weather forecast. There is no sign that there was any rain earlier this morning, and so maybe the forecast is not as bad as it looks. It seems today will be overcast - sometimes quite lightly, and for most of the afternoon very heavily. With a maximum temperature of 19° C it is not going to feel very warm today. Tomorrow should see the return of almost non stop sunshine, but for all that it may struggle to reach 21° C. It seemed to take a long time before I was ready to go out for a walk yesterday. The sun hadn't fully broken though the cloud when I set out at just gone midday, but I hadn't got very far before I was bathed in warm sunshine. It seemed to last for my entire walk, and that walk was a very long walk. It was long enough that I felt no guilt to eat a tub of low calorie/sugar ice cream when I got home. I describe the walk in more detail, and a video includes even more information, plus there is the usual description of dinner, my slep, and thoughts about today, in my full archive page for today. |
Saturday
18th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 117 09:55 BST It was warm and bright yesterday. There was less continuous sunshine than the more optimistic forecasts predicted, and maybe "extended sunny periods" might describe it better. Even when the sun ducked behind a cloud it was still bright and cheery. By late afternoon/early evening the temperature rose to 27° C, and then only very slowly cooled off overnight. I am not so sure that the temperature did fall to as low as 15° C at 7am this morning. For the first time in ages I had my bedroom window open all night, and I had been sleeping with nothing covering me all night. Some the breeze coming through the window did feel a bit fresh, but it is currently rather nice after just coming out from under a hot (very warm) shower. A bit earlier it seemed to be a lot brighter out, but now reality has conformed to the forecast - or would have done if the forecast had not been revised, and now showing sunny intervals at the moment. This latest revision only shows full sunshine for 4 and 5pm. The rest of the time should just feature sunny spells/intervals/periods. It should remain dry, and once again it should end up almost as warm as yesterday - around 25° C. Tomorrow is predicted to be a lot cooler with hardly any sunshine, maybe none, and with a good chance of a couple of rain showers. Yesterday started with a bit of a frenzy, and then changed to relaxation. I did two shopping trips, and then did a bit of gardening. One shopping trip was for two new magazines, and the lure of reading them was very strong. I was still going to try and go out for a long walk until I found I was expecting a parcel delivery. It was a very small parcel, and I expected it come with my normal postman, but it came by van at 3.30pm. My usual postman would have got it here around midday, and I still might have gone out, but by 4pm it felt too late. I stayed in mostly reading, but I did "remaster" a video I shot in 2016. You can see that video, plus read about my day, my night, and what I hope to do today in my full archive page for today. |
Friday
17th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 116 08:02 BST I think I have to admit that the forecast for yesterday was very close to reality. Most of the day was very dull and overcast. I seem to recall the sun did break through for a few very brief occasions during the day, and there was a bit of sunshine just before the sun set - although you had to be on the 5th storey of a building to see it peeping over the horizon. As far as I am aware it was a completely dry day, and in the early evening the temperature reached 22° C. The sun is doing it's best to shine now, but the latest revision to the forecast now says the first sunny intervals are not due for another hour. This afternoon should feature a lot of sunshine, but the latest revision of the forecast shows a bit less than in the screenshot above (I think the screenshot was of the 4am forecast). The main features today will be the afternoon, and evening sunshine plus the temperature rising to a very warm 27° C. I seem to recall that tomorrow was shown as reverting to being dull and overcast in the forecasts yesterday, or the day before, but the prediction now if for a bright sunny afternoon, and 25° C. The highlight of my day, yesterday, must have been my shopping trip to Aldi....and maybe fish fingers for breakfast ! I think I will blame the latter for making me feel very lazy. It wasn't until much later in the afternoon that I started to do anything productive. You can read what I did, plus find out why I am sort of healthy-ish this morning, in my full archive page for today. |
Thursday
16th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 115 10:20 BST The weather forecast for yesterday was approximately correct - except for a few tens of minutes here, and there. After a bright start it got increasingly cloudy. There were long periods of time when it seemed like it would pour with rain at any moment, but all I am aware of is a couple of very light sprinkles of rain. So light that it didn't even get my t-shirt any wetter than just a few spots of rain on it as I walked down the road. Once again the temperature was in that no man's land where it could feel very cool when relaxing, and yet quite warm when doing anything physical (like carrying heavy shopping). I suspect that the temperature may actually have been closer to 20° C than the 18° C forecast. Today started dull, and now it is duller. It will apparently stay like this until mid afternoon when the cloud will start looking less grey. The latest revision to the forecast says there may be a sunny spell (maybe just one !!) just as the sun starts to set at 9pm. By 4pm the temperature should rise to 21° C, and it will hardly fall all night. Tomorrow may see a big change in the weather. It should be sunny all day, and the temperature may rise to 27° C. The sad thing is that it looks like tomorrow may just be an isolated day of summer weather, and later days will get worse. I did two shopping trips yesterday morning. First of all I went to Tesco. I was very happy to see they have pulled up all the one way signs on the floor, and now I can shop in there without any guilt that I am going my way, and not some time wasting, twisty turney route through the store. My second shopping trip was to Poundstretcher. Both trips were to mainly stock up on long life food so I can embargo the shops when compulsory face mask are required. My afternoon was a very happy one. I had a micro party, or booze session with Jodie and Michael sitting round my new cleaned dining table in my almost rehabilitated dining room. By the time they left I was feeling a bit drunk. There are pictures of the occasion, plus a longer write up about the day, my night, and what I have got up to this morning in my full archive page for today. |
Wednesday
15th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 114 07:00 BST Yesterday may have had a little more sunshine, in the form of short sunny spells, than was forecast. I can't recall when it was, but I am sure there was some rain yesterday, although all I noticed were about 5 spots of rain on a window. The road outside still seemed bone dry. The afternoon temperature was 20° C - neither warm nor cold. There seems to be a lot of blue sky visible in some direction, but not in the east where the sun is trying to shine, but it is trying it's best to get through what seems to be white haze rather than clouds. The latest revision to the forecast now shows sunny spells for right now, and then again at 9am. It also now shows some light rain for both midday, and 1pm. Much of the afternoon, and then into the evening, will probably be very dull and gloomy. To make things worse it is going to be just a cool feeling 18° C this afternoon, and the start of the evening. Tomorrow may be dry, but thick cloud is currently forecast for most of the day, but it should be warmer with the afternoon, and early evening temperature reaching about 21° C. I felt terribly unmotivated yesterday, and I spent almost all morning quietly reading. It is a paradox that I felt bad about not being productive, and yet very happy to substitute fantasy for the cruelty of the real world - a cruelty that would get worse later in the day - mandatory masks in shops. I finally got myself motivated to do a bit more cleaning in the dining room so it would be ready for Jodie and Michael this afternoon. We will sit at the table, and have a couple of beer to celebrate. All the details, and a picture of the dining room table looking almost shiny, and surrounded by a lot of space, plus my thoughts about the world and what I will be doing today, are all written in my full archive page for today. |

Lockdown day 113 08:07 BST Yesterday morning was dry, bright and sunny. Yesterday afternoon started with sunny spells, but they gave way to it being overcast. Later in the evening it rained. The afternoon felt fairly warm at 23° C (and possibly 24° C). Unfortunately the weather has turned rather dull again. The cloud was a lot thicker earlier, but now it is lighter, and as I write this the sun has almost found a small gap in the clouds, and the sky to the east is bright enough to cast a very fuzzy pale shadow. The latest revision to the forecast says there could be sunny spells between 10am and 11am, but the rest of the day will probably be overcast - sometimes heavily over cast, but the threat of rain has receded. The afternoon should now start at 20° C, and will probably stay like that for 3 or 4 hours. Tomorrow may be similar to today with a random risk of a shower at some time. I gave further consideration to going out for a walk yesterday, but my earlier decision that I wouldn't go for one turned out to be the final word on the matter. I think that writing about being depressed the day before left me feeling depressed yesterday morning. In the end I had a fairly productive day getting my dining room back into shape. There are more details about that, plus cooking mishaps, and the result of eating too much fruit (no, it's not what you think !), all written up, together with my thoughts this morning, in my full archive page for today. |

13th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 112 09:48 BST On the whole, yesterday was a nice day. It was dry, frequently sunny, and fairly warm at 23° C in the afternoon. In broad terms the latest revision of the BBC weather forecast, and the latest revision to the Met Office forecast, agree. It is small changes in the timing that are the biggest differences. Both agree with reality that it is a sunny morning. The sunshine will give way to just sunny intervals in the afternoon. Later on the clouds will be thick enough to completely block the sun. Sometime after mid evening it will probably rain. Once again the temperature is expected to reach 23° C like it did yesterday. Tomorrow is currently predicted to be overcast, and no more than 19° C. Yesterday's weather was good, but I made no real use of it. I stayed in, and did almost nothing all day. Some time in the morning, probably while I was trying to write optimistic stuff, I started to dwell on all the bad things in the world, and it left me feeling quite depressed. I spent a lot of time reading, and some time snoozing. There were two things I didn't do. One was to drink. I didn't feel in a drinking mood, and the other thing I didn't do was to eat normally. There is a fuller description of my day, that somehow excludes the fact I didn't have any booze, and some notes about this morning in my full archive page for today. |

Lockdown day 111 09:03 BST Some, but not of yesterday's weather was fair, but it still didn't feel like summer. I think the BBC weather forecast came closest to reality by predicting sunny spells across most of the day. The afternoon temperature was probably close to the forecast 20° C. The screenshot above was of the forecast at 4am. It was revised at 8am, and now it shows that there will be far more sunshine. Most of the afternoon is now shown as non stop sunshine, and sunny spells for most hours either side of the afternoon. At the moment the sky is only about 5% clouded over, and it as as good as non stop sunshine now. The afternoon temperature should rise to a more summer like 23° C (possibly 24° C). Tomorrow it is possible that the sunny periods will swap with the hours of non stop sunshine, but the temperature will probably be about the same. Rain, and maybe a fair bit of it, will return tomorrow evening. I had grand plans for some sort of walk yesterday, but a couple of walks to the shops convinced me my legs were not in a walking mood. The walks to the shops were to get, amongst other assorted stuff, painting tools - brushes and rollers. I filled the wall plug holes in the back room chimney breast in the early(ish) morning, and painted the chimney breast in the early afternoon. It went went, and is almost good enough to not need a second coat (although it will get one). All the tales that are fit to tell about all the work I did in my back room (which is now usable as a dining room again), and other commentary on the day, plus how and why I seem to feel very depressed this morning, are written up, and illustrated with a few pictures, in my full archive page for today. |

Lockdown day 110 09:00 BST It seems that recent weather forecasts have been biassed to the pessimistic. Yesterday was, once again, not quite as bad as the forecast predicted. I can't seem to recall if any of the rain predicted for some of the first half of the morning fell or not, but I am biassed towards not, and it seems the the BBC website, that I stopped using, because it kept being very wrong, actually got it about right yesterday. The thicker cloud, that made the morning rather dull, started to thin out by late morning, and we had the first sunny spells. Most of the afternoon featured sunny spells as well, and if I recall correctly, so did the evening - including when just sunshine was forecast for the last few hours before sunset. The afternoon temperature may have been more like 20° C than the 19° C forecast. It looked as if there might have been some rain in the night, but maybe it was just dew giving a slightly damp look to the garden. At the moment there are many clouds to be seen, but also plenty of blue sky too. Those clouds occasionally pass in front of the sun, and so I don't think I would say there is full sunshine like the forecast predicts at the moment. The forecast is slowly changing, and at the moment, changing for the better. The BBC website forecast is a bit more optimistic than the Met Office forecast above, but the latest revision to the Met Office forecast does show sunny spells now featuring in most hours across the afternoon, and into the evening. It seems like it will be a pretty fair day, and with 20° C forecast it should be a pleasant afternoon. Tomorrow should start sunny, and the BBC say it will continue until 1pm, while the Met Office say only until 10pm, but both agree that sunny spells should follow on from full sunshine, and the afternoon temperature will hit 23° C. Yesterday turned out to be quite a busy day, but it started fairly dull. The highlight of the morning was going out shopping, but it was only to the corner shop to buy New Scientist magazine, and so hardly counts. I then spent a relaxed morning reading New Scientist. After a light lunch, followed by a short rest, I tackled the big job of the continuing clearing, and tidying of my back room. Yesterday I made so much progress that the room could be used as a dining room again. It still need a lot more work done on it still, but for the first time the end is in sight....well maybe not the end because who knows what the end may be, but close to it. You can read about most of the more significant bits of my day, yesterday, and my thoughts about today on my full archive page for today. |

10th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 109 09:08 BST Once again, yesterday's weather was not quite as grim as the early forecasts predicted. The main difference was that the cloud was usually medium grey instead of dark grey ! There was some occasional light rain, and overall there was probably just enough to water the garden. I don't recall it following any pattern, and I don't recall any specific times, but I feel sure that they were different times to the forecast predictions. Maybe it was because I was often busy that I felt like it wasn't as cool as the 18° C predicted in the forecast. The BBC website forecast is far more optimistic than the Met Office forecast above. The BBC reckons that most of the morning, and at least half the afternoon will feature sunny spells. The Met Office forecast has been revised twice since I took the screenshot above, and it has changed a bit. 9am and 10am may still feature rain, but the clouds will be much lighter. From then on the cloud will be light, and occasionally the sun may peep through the clouds for short periods. Midday and 9pm are possible times. The temperature is now shown as a steady 18° C - the same as yesterday (the BBC is more optimistic with 19° C). Tomorrow may be sunny in the morning, but lightly overcast in the afternoon. The temperature may make some attempt to be closer to summer at 20° C. Yesterday seemed like it could be a boring day again, but it was not. The most significant event yesterday was to finally get my new internet firewall box installed, and set up. It was problems all the way, but it seems to be working fine this morning. I describe in, I hope, light detail, some of the problems I had (possibly so light that they may seem trivial), and also describe what I may end up doing today (or more accurately what I may start doing today) in my full archive page for today. |

9th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 108 07:30 BST Yesterday's weather was not quite as grim as the early forecasts predicted. There certainly was a lot of rain, but there were some odd hours when none fell, but all the while it ranged between dull and gloomy. For some reason it didn't feel as cool as the 18° C forecast, and I think my thermometers were saying it was 20° C for the afternoon. Today's forecast has got off to a good start. There was some rain at 6am, and I think there was probably quite a few showers during the night - the garden won't need watering today ! At the moment the sky is very grey, and it looks like it is about to rain, but if the forecast continues to hold it shouldn't rain again until 2pm. From then on the rain may come in waves every alternate hour - maybe. Once again it is going to be a cool day, but I note that for one hour only the temperature could reach 19° C (at 5pm). It will mostly be 17 or 18° C. Tomorrow may be brighter than today, and could include a few sunny intervals. Unfortunately it could also feature some showers dotted through the day. The temperature will probably be similar to yesterday, and not that much different to the day before yesterday. Tomorrow should mark the end of the more awful days, and Saturday may be a nicer day, but still rather poor for summer. I thought I had made up my mind that yesterday was going to be such an awful day that I would stay in and do nothing all day. It didn't work out like that. I did go out to Poundstretcher during a lull in the rain. I finished washing the big bath towel I couldn't be bothered to finish washing the day before, and I did quite a lot of hard (for me) housework as part of the job of getting that back room back to be usable as a dining room again like it was until it got full of junk 25 years ago ! All the details of my labours, and what I may do today can be read in my full archive page for today. |

8th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 107 06:50 BST The weather changed halfway through yesterday. The morning started off very sunny, and then there were long sunny spells until almost 2pm, even though by that time there were some heavy clouds building up in the south. By mid afternoon it became terribly gloomy out, but stayed dry. Most revisions of most forecasts said rain would start to fall by mid evening, but as far as I am aware it had not started to rain by sunset. After a chilly morning the temperature climbed to a nice feeling 20° C at the start of the afternoon. Apart from some disagreement on timings, both the Met Office (as in the screenshot above) and the BBC agree that today is going to be very wet. Well they are both off to a good start. My garden has been given a good watering, and Although the rain may become a bit lighter soon, it will continue to be watered for most of the day ! There is currently some disagreement on when there will be a break in the rain that may last from between 1 and 4 hours. The BBC reckon in will start at 4pm, but the Met Office think it will start at 1pm. Both forecasts say it will be a cool day. The Met Office says a maximum of 18° C, and the BBC are a bit more generous at 19° C. Tomorrow looks like it will be a very dull day with light rain in the morning, and heavy rain in the evening. The afternoon may actually be dry, but still very gloomy. Yesterday started off OK, and I almost enjoyed a short(ish) walk. Not meeting Angela, and realising she might have well been in the pub without me, and the way the weather very quickly deteriorated after my walk, left me feeling quite low. I could feel the change in the weather in every bone in my body, but it wasn't really a physical sensation beyond a feeling of pressure on my brain. The thick heavy clouds were pressing down on me, and it felt like the depths of winter...or would have done if it were not 18° C. It affected my eating, and warped my drinking. All the details, plus a few snapshots taken during my walk, and how today is another terribly miserable day, can be read in my full archive page for today. |

7th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 106 09:24 BST If it wasn't for the heavy cloud that appeared in the early afternoon, it might have been a nice day yesterday. Early morning was sunny, and later in the morning there were still sunny spells. Those sunny spells became shorter and shorter, but there were still some as late as 2pm when some really heavy, really dark clouds were gathering in the south. A later update to the weather forecast warned of rain, but it stayed dry here, and by early evening the clouds were thinning out enough to show patches of blue sky. There was even a fairly red tinged sunset. It seemed a bit warmer than the 17 or 18° C forecast for when I was out walking in the early afternoon. The forecast did say 20° C by early evening, but I suspect it reached that at least several hours earlier. The forecast in the screenshot above is wrong ! There has been bright sunshine all morning, and for most of it the sky was completely clear, but clouds are gathering. For now it is quite thin, streaky clouds. If that was the worst on offer it could still be a good day, but the most recent revision to the forecast seems pretty sure that from 11am the clouds will completely cover the sky. By 8pm the clouds may thicken enough to give some light rain for the night. It should be a reasonably warm afternoon at 20° C. Tomorrow could start, and finish with heavy rain. In between there will be light rain. How nice ! It will probably feel quite cool with just 18° C predicted to be the maximum temperature. Yesterday my visit to the pharmacy was a waste of time. This morning it wasn't. The main feature of yesterday was a 2.6 mile walk, although I sadly didn't meet up with Angela as I hoped I might. The full tale of yesterday, or some of the more significant bits of it, plus information about food bought, or eaten, or both, plus another silly video shot on my walk, is all to be found on my full archive page for today. |

6th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 105 07:30 BST It was nice yesterday. There was a lot of sunshine from mid morning onwards - just like the Met Office forecast predicted, and the BBC didn't. The afternoon temperature was 21° C. It is a sunny morning, and the sky is currently blue in most directions, although in some directions it looks a slightly diluted blue. If the forecast holds true the sunshine will give way to just sunny intervals until towards the end of the morning. From midday it looks like it may be lightly overcast until sunny intervals resume at around 6pm. There could be full sunshine for the last hour of daylight. The highest temperature may not be until late afternoon, and it may be no more than 20° C. Tomorrow is currently predicted to start with sunny intervals, but from midday it will be back to overcast. By 6pm the clouds could be getting very thick, and it may rain by 9pm. I have already described the most exciting part of yesterday. It was my two walks to Tesco - one when I found it closed, and the other when it was open. A bit later in the morning I hand washed a couple of t-shirts, and a pair of lounge pants. The only other significant thing I did, apart from reading, snoozing, and eating, was to spend a fair time in the garden. I think I achieved a few useful things. The whole story, or at least any bit worth writing about (and even that is not that exciting), plus what I have already done this morning, can be read in my full archive page for today. |

5th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 104 08:05 BST Yesterday was a very dull day, but the forecast hour of drizzle never seemed to happen no matter how many time the forecast was revised, and the time of it moved around. It was probably the lack of any strong breeze that made the afternoon high of 19° C feel reasonably comfortable. This afternoon should be sunny. In fact the first tentative rays pf sunshine have already managed to break through the clouds, although the clouds still seem to cover most of the sky, and they are rather grey in colour. Maybe there will be full sunshine by 11am. The BBC's forecast is far more pessimistic. They reckon some rain at 9am, and only a few sunny intervals this afternoon. Meanwhile, an update to the Met Office forecast says full sunshine could now start at 10am, and apart from a brief spell of just sunny intervals at 4pm, the sun should shine non stop until sunset. The afternoon temperature should rise to 21° C (the BBC think it will only be 20° C). Tomorrow may start sunny, and end sunny, but the most important bit in the middle may be rather dull. The temperature should still hit 20° C, but not until late in the afternoon. Yesterday was not a good day, although it had it's moments. The gloom put me off going for a walk. I spent a lot of the time being lazy, but I did do some laundry (by hand, as usual), and I did do some useful work in the garden. There is a description of my day, plus pictures to show how my garden is slowly becoming more and more like a garden, and there is the reason I went to Tesco twice this morning in my full archive page for today. |
Saturday
4th July 2020 |
Lockdown day 103 09:19 BST Yesterday was a far nicer day than the day before (and maybe the day before that !). There were plenty of sunny spells, and it felt mildly warm. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, it didn't last that long, and from 5pm there were a series of mostly light showers. The fortunate bit was that those showers were perfect for watering the garden. The maximum temperature was around 20 to 21° C. I've decided to start using the Met Office forecast for the time being. I prefer the BBC format, but the BBC's accuracy has taken a nose dive since lockdown. Presumably they don't have enough staff available to open the window, and see what it really looks like outside. I'm not entirely sure that even the Met Office have got today quite right. I'm fairly sure there was no drizzle at 6am this morning. I was awake for a short while around 6am and I saw no rain, and there is no sign the ground has been wet since last night. I am not completely familiar with the symbols used on the Met Office forecast, but today I see a whole lot of what I take to be heavy, dark grey cloud. I would not say they cloud was dark grey at the moment, and although it is dull outside, it is far from gloomy. Whatever the exact definition is, it seems it will be the same all day long. The only variation is the predicted drizzle at midday. At just 19° C it is not going to be much better than tepid today. Tomorrow may start dull, but it should brighten up from mid morning to give sunny spells. From midday the sunny spells may give way to non stop sunshine (although the BBC reckons it will stay overcast all day). The maximum temperature is currently predicted to be 21° C - a little warmer than today, but a disappointment if the afternoon is going to be drenched in sunshine. Yesterday was not a terribly exciting day, but it had it's moment (including a great roar of escaping steam from the hospital boiler as I walked through the park). I went to pick up my latest repeat prescription, but it was not ready. I did pick up the latest New Scientist from the corner shop. A little later I went out for an almost 2.5 mile walk. I hoped to see Angela in the park, but I knew it was unlikely. She often goes shopping on her Friday lunch break, and then there was the message to say I had another small (probably £25 or at best £50) on the Premium Bonds. A win at any sort of gambling decimates my love life ! Later in the day I did some experimental cooker, and some experimental drink mixing. All the details, including some thoughts about today, and an exciting steam powered video, are in my full archive page for today. |

3rd July 2020 |
Lockdown day 102 07:12 BST Yesterday's weather was a mix of occasional sunny spells, overcast skies, and rain - at least that was definitely the case when I was outside ! The day actually started bright, but the first shower was probably around 11am. It seems that the Met Office forecast came closest to reality. The BBC thought there would be sunny spells until 2pm. As already mentioned, the first shower came before midday, and then around 1pm there was a mix of sunshine and showers. As 2pm approached there was less sun until it stayed in for hours, and the rain started to get more frequent and heavier. I'm not sure when the rain actually stopped, but the showers, a few moderately heavy, seemed to go on into the evening. The garden ended up getting a good watering ! Even in the rain it did seem to feel fairly mild at 20° C (the Met Office reckoned only 18° C). The Met Office seem to have predicted it getting cloudy after a bright start early this morning. I'm not sure I believe a big heavy cloud is just about to pass over us, and drop rain on our heads, but maybe it will happen a little later. With luck there will be sunny intervals around lunchtime, and at 20° C it could feel warm in any sunshine. This evening will probably be wet - both forecasters agree on that, but not the actual times. Looks like the garden won't need watering again today. Tomorrow there seems to be two possibilities again, although they are similar at a very broad level. Both forecasts say it will be very overcast all day. The BBC reckon it will stay dry, but the Met Office predict a few showers. The BBC predict 21° C, and the Met Office say 20° C (but more like 19° C for more of the afternoon). If recent weather, and some of the predictions for a week or more ahead seem to be very poor for July weather, they are ! I have checked my records from last year, and much of July was at least 23° C, and 25° C more typical. There were even a few days over 30° C last July. I blame the Brexiteers for bringing back traditional English summers. I much prefer the continental summers we had while firmly in the EU ! After being put off by walking out into some light rain the day before, I went out regardless of the weather yesterday. At the start there were some nice sunny spells, and the sun felt hot, but they were fairly short lived. For the entire walk the majority of the sky was covered by grey clouds. I managed the first two hours walking in the dry, but then it started to rain. It was just a brief shower or two at first, but the last 15 (?) minutes featured some semi heavy rain. That was the start of quite a few moderate showers that continued into the evening. My walk was partly a walk of discovery. I walked through some roads that I had never walked along before - and some of them were less than a quarter mile from where I used to live. The rain kept Angela away from the park. Not seeing her was disappointing, but understandable. I still felt good for doing the walk. The full story, with pictures and video, plus, as usual stuff about the rest of my day, and what I plan to do today, is all in my full archive page for today. |

2nd July 2020 |
Lockdown day 101 09:05 BST Yesterday's weather is best described as bloody annoying. It seems it was also impossible to forecast ! Not only that, but it is difficult to describe because it was so variable, and I can't even rely on a weather forecast screenshot to jog my memory. So....the morning seemed bright for a while, but then it got cloudy. Just after midday it rained just enough to put me off going out. I thought it would get worse, but just as I was taking my boots off again the sun came out. I think it was possible that at just gone 1pm it was bright and sunny enough for Angela to go to the park. By 2pm it was back to being overcast, and during the afternoon there was another light shower or two. None of the rain was really enough to water the garden though. As sunset approached the sky seemed mostly clear, and there was a nice red sunset developing as I closed the curtains to go to bed before sunset. On the whole, the day felt cool rather than the 21°C that the BBC forecast. Yesterday was not a great day. Much of it was miserable, but it did have it's moment - mostly involving food ! The full story, such as it is, but the usual report on the start of this morning, and what I will be trying/hoping to do, can be read in my full archive page for today. |

1st July 2020 |
Lockdown day 100 08:22 BST I said the weather forecast for yesterday made it look as if it would be a horrible day, and it was ! For the most part it was gloomy, although the sun did manage to briefly pop out once or twice. There was definitely some rain, but it was in the morning rather than during the afternoon as the forecast said. It was probably not really enough to water the garden, but I treated it as such. The weirdest thing was that it seemed very cool for a June day. The temperature may have hit 19° C for a short while, but much of the day was much cooler. It was a cold evening too. Today the temperature may rise to a more acceptable 20° C or even 21° C - acceptable for April or November, but not July. This afternoon, at a time that seems to be anyone's guess, there will be some rain. That will cool things off, and it could be another chilly night. It seems that tomorrow is going to be similar to today. In fact, if forecasts are valid for more than 30 minutes ahead, it could be that the first half of this new month may not be a lot better than today. So much for global warming ! Yesterday was a day that brought no joy. The weather was such that I just wanted to stay in, and do nothing. That is almost exactly what I did. I passed a fair amount of the day reading, and thanks to my extra late night, the previous night, I had a few snoozes. I have to admit they were nice until I tried to do anything after getting up again. I often felt ill. I can't really define what ill means in this context. It was that sort of feeling you get 5 minutes after dying - or that is how I imagine it. I seem to have used quite a lot of words to describe not much at all, although pondering about a possible hoax did take a full paragraph. All the words about yesterday, and even more words about this morning are written in my full archive page for today. |
