Today will
definitely see rain - I know this because
it is raining now ! I think that today the
forecast may be a lot more accurate than
yesterday's forecast. Somehow the idea of
heavy rain later on seems very likely. The
latest revision to the forecast says that
there will be several more hours at 5° C
than shown in the early forecast
screenshot above. Tomorrow may be a degree
cooler, and probably fairly dry, but thick
cloud is still predicted for the whole
day.
It was nice to relax yesterday
after my long walk the day before. I
probably didn't need to because I didn't
feel too bad except for lack of sleep
after a crap night. Based on the morning
weather forecast, rather than the reality
of the weather later, I had made up my
mind that I wouldn't be going out. It
turned out that I could have gone for a
short walk, mostly in sunshine, and it
probably wouldn't have felt too bad.
I didn't seem to have much else to
do, or it would be more true to say there
was nothing I felt like doing, and so it
could have been a boring day, but it
wasn't. There were things I could do that
would soak up some time, and they would be
more satisfying than just reading and
snoozing - although the latter did mop up
several hours. There was one job I was
intending to do in small increments, when
I was in the right mood, that I ended up
doing almost in it's entirety.
It was ages ago that I started a
spreadsheet to collect a record of all my
walking. Before yesterday I had done a bit
here, and a bit there, but the last time I
worked on it was possibly last June. That
meant I had a load of entries to make in
it to bring it up to date. Not only bring
it up to date, but to refine it in various
ways. One such refinement was to generate
a total for the year. I have only added
that feature for last year, but I intend
to clean up and add things like totals to
previous years. Last year I walked 244
miles !
This is a screenshot of part
of the spreadsheet. It is supposed to show
that most of my longest walks, and my most
frequent walks were done in the hottest
summer months. One refinement I will be
doing is to highlight walks over 5 miles,
possibly in yellow, and highlight walks
over 6 miles in red (or green, or ????).
In this excerpt there are only 4 walks
longer than 6 miles, and so they are
comparatively rare. That probably means my
walk 2 days ago, which was almost 6 miles
(really only 5.762 miles) was rather
exceptional considering how little walking
I have been doing since the weather
turned, and all my joints are getting
rusty.
I'm sure there was something else
of note that I did yesterday. It is on the
tip of my tongue, but I can't seem to
recall what it was. Maybe if I tick off
some of the things I didn't do it will
come to mind. I definitely didn't do any
washing up (beyond a couple of glasses)
yesterday. That really needs to be a
project for today - I am running out of
cutlery. I was going to try and be very
careful with my sugar (and carbohydrate)
intake, but that went out the window
(probably) when I drank three bottles of
beer in the afternoon.
The beer is worth a comment. It was
some of the last few bottles of my first
online beer order made when it was obvious
the pubs would never re-open, and I
couldn't go into any shops because I
didn't want to wear a mask. That first
order was to the Westerham Brewery. With
hindsight it was a mistake. I think they
were expensive, and it turned out I was
not keen on their beer. Since the first
time we had a session drinking their beer
I have periodically checked it to see if I
could form a different opinion about it.
Yesterday I came to a final
conclusion. It is a fine beer to drink,
but you must not stop drinking it. The
thing that makes it unpleasant is the very
sour after taste. As you drink it, it sort
of taste nice, but a few moments after the
last mouthful you get this nasty after
taste. I must admit this mainly concerns
their "Viceroy IPA". I drunk two bottles
of that. Now I think of it, I didn't seem
to notice a bad after taste when I drank a
bottle of their "Grasshopper" Kent Red
ale, but the actual taste while drinking
it was not all that nice.
Apart from the effect of the beer
on my sugar consumption, I did try and eat
almost sensibly. My lunch was OK. It was
no more than grilled skinless and boneless
chicken thighs. I flavoured them with some
pepper sauce and some pizza topping herbs
and spices. My dinner was the same but
with added Heinz Creationz "Italian
inspired" mixed baked beans. I think they
may have had some added sugar in their
recipe.
I felt tired last night, and turned
the TV off after 2 of 3 episodes of "Allo
Allo" had finished. I read for a short
while, and then expected to fall asleep
almost instantly. Actually it probably
took 30 to 40 minutes before I fell
asleep. Once again my sleep was a bit
"lumpy". Initially I slept OK (once I got
to sleep), but later in the night I seemed
to wake up more than needed. It was soon
after 5am when I woke up with the feeling
of something like (but not) an ingrowing
nasal hair. It was a very localised
stinging sensation in my left nostril.
Five hours later I am thinking I
might have the common cold, but it is
probably Covid-19. After all, every malady
is Covid-19 now - even a broken leg !. It
is also possible it is an allergic
reaction to something like a fungal spore
- possibly from the mud on my walking
boots. It has been very variable so far.
While walking in the fresh air (to Aldi)
my nose seemed no worse, and possibly
better than usual when walking in the cold
air. From time to time I get a hint of a
mildly sore throat, but it is so tenuous
that it often goes away while trying to
evaluate how bad it is. I have also
developed a, so far, very intermittent,
slightly wet cough. Funnily enough all
these symptoms have got worse as I write
about them !
Going to Aldi felt fine as I walked
there, but my legs, or mostly my right
knee, complained a bit with the heavier
load walking home again. I did need
several things from there, but in one
respect it was a bad idea to go today.
This morning my blood glucose had come
down a little bit to 8.7mmol/l. That is
still too high though. I am wondering
whether to blame yesterday's beer, or
whether it is high because I am fighting
an infection. It could be the latter, but
as yet I have had no high temperature -
even by my own standards, let alone
anywhere near official fever temperature.
As I write this my temperature is 36.3° C,
and looking back I see that is a very
typical figure for me at this time of day.
My blood glucose has got off to a
bad start this morning ! I have to
admit I was suckered in by the "I'm New
!", but also by plain curiosity, and the
fact that they did look tasty - and they
were. I would not like to make a habit of
eating these, but they were really good as
a novelty breakfast ! I will add that they
are smaller than they look !
Today I am.....Errm, I guess I am
resting again today. The weather looks
foul, and I have no desire to go out
again. I will do the washing up today, but
that is about all I will do as part of a
maser plan. I may well spend between 10
minutes and 3 hours, depending on how I
feel, on more work on my spreadsheet of
walks over the years. Other than that,
reading and snoozing don't sound too bad
to me.
