My downstairs
thermometer said the temperature was just
1.6° C at about 7.30am, and there was a
frost. With luck it will warm up to 9° C
by mid afternoon, and it will be helped by
there probably being a mix of sunshine and
sunny spells today. It might look good,
and even feel good from behind glass, but
it is going to feel very nippy out there.
Tomorrow might manage 13° C, but it seems
it will probably be a cloudy day with no
sign of the sun.
Yesterday may have been very dull,
but somehow it seemed like a good
day....or maybe one of the better days
recently might be more accurate. I didn't
do much in the morning except a bit of
tidying up, and some glass polishing ready
for some beers in the afternoon. I was
considering going to Tesco during the
morning, but it was after midday when I
went out - not to Tesco, but to the mini
supermarket on Catford Bridge.
I bought a selection of stuff from
there. There was no reason except for
curiosity that I bought some packets of
instant noodles. They were Polish (of
other E. European) style instead of
pretending to be Chinese. I bought a few
beers, and some snackpots. The latter were
of the bean salad type, but they didn't
have the bean salad. They did have some
couscous and and similar things. Finally
there were two very significant things.
Some fresh baked, unwrapped, seeded crusty
loaf, and a packet of spicy Turkish sliced
beef.
In the afternoon Jodie and Michael
came over for a beer session. Jodie was in
an odd but happy mood. She was looking
forward to another date after
leaving here. It was with the man
she recently met. She wasn't drinking much
so she had room for more beer with him.
Michael was in his usual very talkative
way. He can barely communicate any more
than basic things with his deaf wife, and
so he takes the opportunity to talk non
stop once he has an audience who can hear
him.
Michael left first at almost
5.30pm, and Jodie left just after 6pm to
get the 6.18pm train from the station. I
had drunk more then either of them, and
while I didn't feel particularly drunk, or
even drunk at all, it was enough to lower
my barriers/control over eating. I thought
I felt starving, and so my big serving of
roast sprouts, bacon and chestnuts
(roasted from frozen from a bag found at
the back of the freezer) just didn't
satisfy.
I could have been sensible and had
a can of soup, or something similar, but
it seemed like a good, but very stupid,
time to attack the seeded loaf I had
bought earlier. I had eaten a few chunks
of it just on it's own, dry, and it was
very nice. I cut two slices, and used
mayonnaise instead of butter, to make a
sandwich using a generous amount of the
spicy Turkish slice beef I mentioned
earlier. It was really delicious, and I
then had another !
It was after that when the day took
a minor turn for the worse. I couldn't
seem to find anything on TV that really
grabbed my attention. I ended up flicking
between Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and
Star Trek: Voyager being shown at the same
time on different channels. At the end I
decided I didn't like either of the two
stories, and at 8pm I turned the TV off
and went to bed. My intention was to read
in bed for 30 minutes, but I ended up
reading until about 9pm. That was when I
had reached the end of the book.
I don't think I can think of much
to say about my sleep. It was neither good
nor bad. It did feature a lot of dreams,
but only one makes any sense, although
there is a lot about it I can't remember.
For instance I can't remember if I was on
my own, or with a friend. It concerned
making going for several rides on trains
that were using a rarely used curve. It
was based on a real life situation when I
took a couple of trains from Catford
Bridge to Beckenham Junction station.
There was only one train a
day in each direction that took this
route, and it was due to end on some
forgotten date. In theory there should
have been public enquiries and stuff about
the closure of the route, but some how
that was sidestepped by keeping it as a
diversionary route, and keeping one very
late night train to the coast diverted
that way. It is used quite regularly for
trains to Tonbridge and beyond when
engineering work blocks the line through
(for instance) Hither Green, but none stop
at either Catford Bridge or Beckenham
Junction. In my dream the stations looked
very different, and I think had different
names, but the idea of the route was
basically the same.
I had bread, and it was white bread
(which often contains sugar) late in the
evening. Earlier on I had assorted beers,
and other chunks of bread, plus other
snacks that I can't remember. These are
all the ingredients to send my blood
glucose soaring this morning, but they
didn't ! This morning, to my great
surprise, my blood glucose was just
8.5mmol/l. That was a little higher than
yesterday, but it was the sort of figure I
was getting early last month while trying
hard to get it lower, and it is close to
my usual monthly average.
This morning I have had two more
sandwiches made with the lovely seeded
bread. It is a very unusual breakfast for
me these days, but I enjoyed it. There is
a theory that getting some of the worst
stuff out the way in the morning might
lead to a lower blood glucose reading in
the morning if I am careful for the rest
of the day. I still have more of that loaf
to eat, but I will try and save it for
tomorrow. For the rest of the day I might
try and stick with soup....but it all
depends on unknown unknowns or something.
Today should be bright and
theoretically nice to go for a walk in. Of
course it is bloody freezing out there,
although it will be merely slightly
freezing later on. It would be sort of
nice to take a wander in the sunshine, but
there is a fly in the ointment, and the
genesis of that fly was the big pile of
sprouts I had yesterday. They have left my
guts feeling a bit volatile this morning.
If in the next few hours I have some very
productive visits to the toilet I may dare
venture out to where there are no toilets
for miles, but other wise I will feel
safer to stay in. There are several things
I could do today if I stay in - most of
them involving computers old and new.
