It is a
comparatively mild morning (11° C), and by
1pm it could be 14° C. Unfortunately it is
going to be either dull, or very dull
today. Despite only a 10% chance of rain
this morning it is actually drizzling as I
write this. I would not be surprised if
there were not more drizzle to come - the
day has that sort of feel to it. Funnily
enough, the forecast for tomorrow seems to
be a better match for today, but I admit I
base that purely on the fact that is shows
light rain for 8am. It might actually be
duller than today, and it will be 1°
cooler or more.
Yesterday was the day I finally
went out. It didn't go quite as well as
planned. That was 90% due to the weather,
and 10% due to a brief period of passing
wind. For a while it did seem that maybe
something more was on it's way, and indeed
it was, but not until gone 8pm last night
! The thing about the weather was it was
nothing like the forecast - even the
latest revision shapshotted while I was
out.
This is what the Met Office weather
forecast was showing on my mobile phone
while I was just about to start my walk.
This was the reality while waiting
for a train to take me to Clock House
station. I planned to walk back from
there. You can see a small smear of blue
sky in this picture taken looking north
from Catford Bridge station, but it also
shows the darker and threatening clouds.
The whole scene looks pretty gloomy, and
it was ! As I mentioned above, there
was also quite a chilly wind blowing
despite the air temperature just changing
from 14° to 15° C when I took the picture.
Another negative/worrying thing was that
just before I went out I had been in the
garden feeding the birds, and it looked
like I had just missed a light shower.
My original plan was based on the
idea that there would be a lot of
sunshine, and that it would feel fine in
just a t-shirt. It was bearable, but not
enjoyable. I planned to explore a footpath
I had seen when leaving Cator Park in
Beckenham, that was signposted to go to
Clock House station. To walk to and from
the start of that footpath was a 6.82 mile
walk (see
21st February 2021)
and there was no way I was going to be
able to do that again without a lot of
practice. I reckoned that if I got the
train to Clock House station it would be a
much more manageable 3 and a bit mile
walk.
I had made it to Catford Bridge
station before I gave up, but thought I
would hang around a bit and do some train
spotting. This train, lead by 376006,
would have been the train I would have
caught. I was a bit disappointed that it
wasn't one of Southeastern's new (second
hand) class 707 trains. The ast time I was
"train spotting" it seemed like most of
the services to and from Cannon Street
were class 707s in the middle of the day,
and that the trains to and from Charing
Cross were class 376 trains. I am positive
this train had started from Cannon Street.
This train was definitely heading
to Cannon Street, and it is a class 465
train. It is almost as if all the class
707 trains were out of service - maybe for
a software upgrade - maybe something as
simple as the WiFi being reprogrammed to
say Southeastern instead of South West
Trains. I didn't think to even check the
WiFi on the last class 707 train I used,
but Jodie, who has to rely on WiFi because
of here very heavy data usage, playing
silly games, did check and confirmed that
the WiFi had the wrong company name. I
almost wish I had checked it, and taken a
screenshot so we could all have a laugh in
the future.
The picture above is also a good
example showing the dark brooding clouds
instead of the forecast blue skies and
sunshine. After taking pictures of the
front and rear units of the train to
Hayes, and the train to Cannon Street, I
decided to go home via the old Turkish
Supermarket that is now a semi
international supermarket on Catford
Bridge.
It was my intention to buy a few
beers in there, plus a few other things. I
was only one pace inside the shop when I
spotted all I would need for my beer
purchase. There was a stack of 4 packs of
Debowe, 7% beer priced at £4 for the pack
of 4. That made it equivalent of £1 per
tin, and with each tin being 7% that made
it a good bargain. That is even cheaper
than Wetherspoons, end of date, beer
costs.
There were two other things I
bought in there. One was a nice crusty
loaf, and the other was actually two packs
of spicy, sliced, Turkish beef. The pack I
bought a week or two ago was really nice,
but maybe that depended on what it was
eaten with. When I got home I made a
sandwich using two thick slices of that
crusty bread, and maybe the taste of the
beef was lost in the taste of the bread.
I'll use more slices of that beef the next
time.
I spent a bit of time in the
afternoon preparing the photos I took
while out. As well as the few I showed
here, I also prepared 4 photos to add to
my spreadsheet cataloguing all my train
photos. It shouldn't have taken that long
to do all the photo editing work, but
somehow it seemed to. Maybe munching on a
big sandwich slowed things up. Once the
photos were done I went into pure lazy
mode and lay on my bed reading, and I
think I had a snooze too.
Eventually dinner time came around,
and I had a Tesco ready meal of liver and
bacon to use before it went out of date.
It was bigger, and better than the Aldi
version, but mainly because the Aldi
version comes with mashed potato. The
bacon in the Aldi version is horrible. The
bacon in the Tesco product is merely
unpleasant. One day I should try
cooking/heating them in the oven. Maybe if
the bacon is cooked that way it will taste
better.
The liver and bacon should almost
have been my entire dinner, but I had
strange, impossible to resist, desire for
some cheese on toast - like Welsh Rarebit
but with extras ! I had all the
ingredients I needed, and because I was
using the microwave to heat the liver and
bacon, I could use the mini oven/grill to
make the toast. I had two slices of crusty
loaf with sliced jalapeños and spicy beef
slices under melted mature cheddar cheese.
The only error was not to leave it
grilling long enough for the cheese to
start to brown. It was still delicious
though, and the pleasure was multiplied by
the fact that it must be 20, 30, 40 (?)
years since I last had anything like
it. Pizza seems lame by comparison.
I ended up watching, or half
watching a fair bit of TV last night, and
didn't get to bed until 9pm. I tried to
read in bed, but after as little as 15
minutes I couldn't stop yawning. Very soon
after I was fast asleep. For another night
I seemed to sleep well. I remember
dreaming, but I can't remember enough to
even try and describe what the dream(s)
were about, let alone any details of them.
Evidently I got enough sleep because I
felt ready to get up just after 6am.
I ate a fair bit of bread
yesterday, and a few other things that
were once not good for my blood glucose.
Yesterday it was like I was almost eating
normally without a care of what I was
eating, and yet this morning my blood
glucose was just 8.1mmol/l. That took my
running average down to 8.26 - a new
record low for this year ! Had I taken
some car I may have got this morning's
reading closer to my target of 7.5mmol/l.
This morning I feel neither good
nor terrible. How ever I do feel a bit
bad. My legs seemed to be a bit stiff, and
my chest is still not fully OK. I could
hear my ribs (seemingly) grating away as I
was doing no more than drying my hands on
a towel. Fortunately it didn't cause any
pain or discomfort, but it did give the
impression of being on the edge. Today I
could potentially inflame my ribs/chest
again by taking a walk in the cold and
damp. With luck I shall be meeting Angela
for a drink at lunchtime.
