There was a fair
amount of sunshine yesterday, albeit mostly in
the form of fairly long sunny spells. It was
also warmer than recently with the temperature
reaching 13° C. There was just enough breeze
to dry clothes n the line quite quickly, but
not enough to make it feel cool.
Yesterday there was
hope that today would feature a nice sunny
afternoon, and maybe there is still time for a
later revision of the forecast to re-instate
them, but the early morning forecast, as shown
above, shows very few sunny spells, and the
latest revision only shows sunny spells for
11am, 2pm, 6pm and 7pm. The fact that it is
sunny as I write this must be in my
imagination ! The clouds do look thin and
streaky, and I rather suspect there could be
at least some hazy sunny spells now and then
for some time. The good thing is that even
without any significant sunshine it should
still reach a pleasing 16° C this afternoon.
Tomorrow will see the return to showers, but
the temperature might still reach 15° C in the
afternoon.
I think I gave in to the Sunday blues
yesterday. It was not a day where much
happened. The only significant thing was that
I did some laundry, by hand, and hung it on
the line to dry. It included a small bath
towel. I had it all on the washing line by
10am, and by 4pm I brought it in 99.5% dry. It
was almost warm from the sun, but by 4pm the
sun was getting hazy, and the angle was wrong
for it to fall on my washing.
The rest of my day was taken up being
lazy. I did have an idea I might go out, but
somehow I just couldn't seem to be bothered to
do so. It wasn't pure lazyness because I did
indulge (although indulge sounds like I liked
it) in a different diversion. I started
looking for a couple of pictures among my
negatives taken on my old Praktika Super TL
SLR camera in the days before digital cameras
became affordable, and of good enough quality
to be useful for anything more than a head and
shoulders snap.
I was actually looking for a few
pictures I had taken of Birkbeck station
before an old disused platform was rebuilt for
the Croydon Tramlink. About 90% of my
negatives have been scanned, and fortunately
it was among them, but I probably missed them
the first time I went through them. I finally
found them, but it wasn't until I had edited
the first one to improve how it looked, and
then went to save it, that I realised I had
already done the editing a few years ago. I
still re-edited all three of the photos, and I
think I may have done a slightly better job of
it.
Another thing I did yesterday was to
somehow refrain from eating too much, or the
wrong sort of stuff. It was another day when I
really wanted some cake - not special, or
luxury cake, but just something basic with
some currants in it. I had, and still have an
unopened box of Jaffa Cakes, but I knew they
would be very bad for me, and so I left them
alone. I had little else in the cupboard or
fridge that wouldn't need a lot of preparation
and/or cooking.
What I did eat, a second lot of instant
noodles, a couple of quarter pounder pattys
with gherkins, a bag of mostly defrosted jumbo
prawns, and something else that I can't
remember, was generally unhealthy, but it was
mostly moderately low in sugars (but not
zero). All this was mostly a reaction to
my high-ish blood glucose reading in the
morning - and it worked.
I ended up watching a few things on TV
last night. Two programmes were typically
terribly edited documentaries where half an
hour is used up by fillers, repeated bits, and
similar crap, to convey about 10 minutes of
information. I seem to think I might have
watched a film as well last night, but maybe I
didn't because I have no recollection of what
it was about, let alone it's name. I
definitely did some reading, but I don't think
I was reading for long. I have no idea of the
time when I went to sleep, but I would guess
it was before 10pm, and maybe closer to 9pm.
I had another good night's sleep if
judged by the time I spent awake. The only
weird thing, apart from a dream, was whether I
woke up to go for a pee at 2.19am, or 2.35am ?
Maybe I have two pees in quick succession, but
somehow that feels very unlikely. Maybe one
was a dream, or maybe I just misread the
clock. I definitely had a dream on the subject
of being lost - although I was not lost in the
dream, but I think it was a metaphor for
feeling like I am floating on a sea of
possibilities, or probabilities, or in other
words, I don't know what to do with my life.
In the dream I appeared to be in Italy
with my friend Patricia, her partner, and a
young girl who was with us, but did and said
nothing. We were all at a railway station, and
I was keeping close to Patricia because I knew
nothing about Italian railways, and couldn't
speak Italian. The main part of the dream must
have been inspired by my troubles with
cancelled and delayed trains at Elmers End on
Saturday.
The was in information display showing
a countdown to when out train was due to
arrive. I don't think it displayed a
destination, and I have no idea where we were
going. The countdown would get close to zero,
and then reset to 45 minutes or more.
Eventually the numbers very quickly came down
to zero, and we had to rush to get to the
platform where our train would be. For some
reason we didn't use a side passage where we
could see out train, but carried on to the end
of the passage.
We came out by the dining and bar car.
It was completely open at the top and sides.
At that point the train started moving very
slowly. One of the waiters or a barman opened
a flap in the bar, and urged us to get on the
train there. Once aboard he said we had to go
to the office, and pointed us to a door. It
should have been an inter carriage connecting
door, but we seemed to enter into an office
that was on the station forecourt - and not on
the train ! I think we then went to a bar on
the station, possibly a different station to
the one we started at, and ordered some
drinks. I don't really remember anything more
about the dream from then on, and I suspect it
was because I woke up for a pee.
It wasn't a very cold night,
but it was cold enough to justify having the
heater on low all night, and to sleep
under the duvet all night. I woke up at 6am,
and before going for a pee I turned the heater
up full. After the pee I went back to bed, but
I hardly slept. I got up at about 6.30am. By
then my bedroom had reached a comfortable
temperature to slouch around hardly dressed,
and do the usual routine.
This morning my blood glucose was down
to 7.8mmol/l. My eating regime yesterday
seemed to work as hoped. I sort of felt OK
with just a few creaks from assorted joints.
This morning I had my shower quite early
because I wanted to, and did go shopping in
Aldi this morning. My blood glucose didn't
seem quite low enough to treat myself to cake
for breakfast, but I did buy a Madeira cake
that is well sealed enough to survive in the
cupboard for however long it takes to get a
sub 7.0 reading when I check my blood glucose
one happy morning.
I did allow myself to buy a couple of
carefully selected sandwiches to munch on for
breakfast. Both were relatively low sugar
compared to many of them. The only trouble
with them was that I didn't get much
satisfaction from them. They were both nice,
but I wanted something exquisite, and while
Aldi do sell a good selection, they sell
nothing like a nice crusty sub filled with all
that is nice. Maybe the ultimate, gold plated
sandwich is just a figment of my imagination.
I did seem to buy quite a wide
selection of stuff, and I probably over did it
a bit when I considered what was already in my
fridge when I got home. The weirdest thing I
bought was a bag of frozen calamari in
breadcrumbs. I didn't really look to see if it
was full of sugar, but I did check that it
could be cooked in the oven, and didn't need a
deep far fryer. I did go a bit overboard with
the drinks I bought. I managed to stuff into
my big ruscksack 3 x 2.25l bottles of Diet
Coke, and 2 x 2l bottles of sugar free
Dandelion & Burdock. I like that stuff,
and it was probably worth breaking my back
carrying 10.75kg on my back.
The next thing I have to do is to
finish washing a large bath towel I left
soaking after I had had my shower. Ideally I
should have had it on the line now because
contrary to the weather forecast, most of the
morning has been sunny. The latest revision to
the forecast has grudgingly added 1, 2 and 3pm
as featuring sunny spells. Once that towel is
on the line I may do little else involving any
muscular effort....on the other hand, if it is
warm and bright, I could do a bit of
gardening.
