Today could be
disappointing. According to the Met Office
forecast we should be seeing the last of the
sun for the whole day about now. The BBC
weather forecast optimistically shows sunny
spells/period through most of the day, but
with a gap of three hours in the afternoon.
Both forecasts predict an afternoon high of
19° C. It appears to be little more than a
single degree less than that right now, and so
maybe there is hope that it might end up a bit
warmer. Tomorrow could be mostly sunny, or
even very sunny is the BBC forecast is right.
The temperature will probably hit 23° C.
I had a pleasant day yesterday, and yet
I did very little. However, what I did do was
important. It started off with a shopping trip
to Tesco. My rucksack was filled with 8 litres
of Diet Coke, plus a 70cl bottle of Jameson's
Irish whiskey. It was on special offer (only
with a Clubcard), and so it had to be bought -
besides which, it is a very good whiskey in my
humble opinion.
I was quite selective about what food I
bought, and I didn't even buy that much for
me. I did get a fair bit of bird seed. For me
it was almost just lettuce and bacon, but I
also bought three packs of "Asian" instant
noodles, and an Asian inspired salad type
thing. It was alleged to be low sugar, but all
the coconut and stuff did give it a sweet
taste. I think that covers my entire shopping
list.
The two things I am most proud of, if
"proud" is really the word I am looking for,
was to wash two pairs of jeans. Hand washing
jeans, and particularly wringing them out
between each stage of the wash, is not the
easiest job. I did one pair, and took a rest,
but I started to think that maybe it wasn't so
bad, and with the afternoon expected to be dry
and warm, and even occasionally sunny, I
decided to wash the second pair.
I didn't really do much after that, and
I guess I just sunk back into the usual
boring, and lightly depressiveness of a Sunday
afternoon - the worst day of the week ! I had
eaten the "Asian inspired" salad put,
described above, as a sort of elevenses. For a
slightly late lunch I had a simple, but maybe
not perfectly wise lunch of boiled new
potatoes and mixed salad leaves. It worked
really well. The texture of the potato and
salad leaves was really good, and somehow the
flavours complimented each other. The only
danger is all the starch in the potatoes gets
turned into sugar as it is digested, and so I
try and keep my potato consumption to a
minimum.
During the afternoon I read for a fair
bit while laying on my bed. While doing so I
concluded that a slightly thicker pillow might
be more comfortable, but there seems to be
such a fine line between too low and too high.
Maybe pillows should be described in quarter
inches ! My new pillow combination (or two
pillows) was probably very slightly too high,
but closer to ideal than the original pillows.
Later on I would watch a couple of
episodes of the ITV version of Sherlock Holmes
- the most authentic version in my opinion.
During the second one I had my dinner. It was
three cheese and chill flavoured burger
patties served on a bed of mixed lettuce
leaves. It was very enjoyable, even if
it left me slightly wanting more. I could have
had some Twiglets as a sort of "afters", but I
had gone off Twiglets at that point.
Earlier on I had been happily crunching
away on some Twigletsm, and I remember the
point when one sharp bit of Twiglet cut what
was probably my gum. I didn't really pay much
attention to it until later when I was
preparing my dinner. It felt like I had a bit
of slippery leaf caught between my teeth. I
went to try and pull it out, but what came out
was a blood clot. Once again the bad side of
the blood thinner, Clopidogrel, that I take
became apparent. It makes me a bit like a
haemophiliac - one small cut can bleed very
freely for ages. I am not sure what caused it
to clot again - it was either strong
mouthwash, or more likely, neat whisky, but it
could have just been time.
It makes me reluctant to each Twiglets
again, but I have half a bag of them, and I am
not going to let them go to waste. The only
answer is to eat them one at a time, and even
then to eat very slowly. That will be so
tedious that I won't be able to enjoy them as
I concentrate on not cutting the soft tissues
inside my mouth.
I had a quick flick around the TV
channels after dinner, and I only found two
channels with anything interesting on them.
One was Dave, showing a repeat of QI. The
programme description made it sound like I
might not have seen before, but it would clash
with better stuff on Sky Arts. When I first
tuned to Sky Arts they were showing a Status
Quo concert. I watched them play a few tunes,
but I think I only like Status Quo one song at
a time. After a couple I turned off to read my
book.
I turned on an hour or so later when
there was a documentary about the making of
Pink Floyd's classic album(s). It was a bit
confusing because it was initially about the
album "Meddle", but then wandered to Dark Side
Of The Moon. Maybe the two were sort of lumped
together because there were clips of some
songs played live during the "Meddle" era,
that were further developed for the most
famous class album "Dark Side Of The Moon". I
feel sure I had seen the documentary before,
but it might have been the case that I had
seen most bits that made up the documentary in
other documentaries.
That programme was followed by a
recording of Pink Floyd (minus Roger Waters -
I think) performing "The Delicate Sound Of
Thunder" at some arena somewhere. I watched a
fair bit of it, but so much of the show is the
stunning visual effects, and they don't
translate to the small screen that well in my
opinion. It was probably gone 9pm when I
turned off and went to bed to read for a bit
before going to sleep, probably by 10pm.
I was sleeping on my new pillow
combination, and it was strange in that it
didn't feel right, and yet it seemed easy to
sleep on once I was asleep. Ignoring almost an
hour of insomnia at about 3.30am, I seemed to
sleep better than usual, and for some reason I
can only remember waking up for a pee twice in
the night. I have no idea when I couldn't
sleep for that hour, or I think it was close
to a full hour, at around 3.30am. I just
couldn't seem to get comfortable, and it
wasn't really the pillows that were the
problem, but I guess they didn't help.
Some of the problem was temperature
related, and trying to find the impossible
ration between how much I was uncovered, and
how much covered by the duvet. One curious
thing is that I can't seem to recall any
specific bits, like an elbow, or other joint
being particularly uncomfortable. Sometime it
was just a single hair that was tickling
somewhere on my face, and of course the more I
tried to ignore it, the worse it got.
I will admit it is more or less
guesswork when I say I fell asleep again at
about 4.30am. I slept for about an hour, and
then I contemplated getting up, but I thought
that maybe I would try for another "10
minutes" of sleep. Nothing seemed to happen
until suddenly it was gone 7am ! That seemed a
fair time to get up. One thing I forgot to
mention about later yesterday afternoon/early
evening, is that I guzzled three cans of
Guinness. That could have been a good reason
to get up to pee more in the night, but it
didn't.
My lack of peeing suggested a quite low
blood glucose level, but it wasn't. It was
only 8.8mmol/l when I checked this morning,
and while a little bit higher than hoped for,
it was good in respect of what I had eaten,
and maybe drunk, yesterday. After my on and
off sleep, and on different pillows, I seem to
feel fairly OK this morning. In particular I
don't seem to have any neck or back pains. I
think the new pillow combination stays for
now.
I have got off to a late start, and I
haven't got much to show for it. I have fed
the birds, and I have fed myself. I had been
thinking along the lines of skipping breakfast
unless I felt any particular hunger. I can't
say I felt hungry this morning, but I was
wildly curious about the "Asian" instant
noodles I bought yesterday. One in particular
was Kimchi flavour, and that is what I had
this morning. It wasn't nasty in any way, but
I can't really say I enjoyed it. Now my
curiosity is satisfied I doubt I will buy any
more of that flavour.
Another thing I forgot to mention about
yesterday was that I received a reply to a
text message I sent to Jodie about drinking.
She confirmed she was recently back from
Finland, and maybe it was late on Saturday
night because she said she was too tired to go
out - and specially too tired to bother with
buses. She suggested that we have our beer
tasting session today.
My day is now planned for boozing from
mid afternoon. Before that I want to do some
shopping either in Poundland and/or Savers.
There is nothing in either shop that I can't
live without for a few days, or more, and so
it all hangs on how much time and enthusiasm I
have.
