There are no
thunderstorms warned of today, and there is
very little chance of any rain today. The
highest chance is a 20% chance at 11pm
tonight. The sky is a little hazy, and
sometimes the promised sunny spells are only
of hazy sunshine (like right now), but
hopefully it will stay bright enough to
enthuse me before the sun gets covered by
light cloud from about 1pm, and we see no
sunshine again until (possibly) 6pm. The
afternoon's high is currently predicted to be
just 21° C. Tomorrow could see sunny spells
from soon after sunrise until about 4pm. It
will be cloudy after that, but should stay
dry. The afternoon temperature may only reach
20° C tomorrow.
The gloomy morning yesterday did
it's usual trick of sapping all my energy and
enthusiasm. The possible threats of
thunderstorms for later in the day took away
any hopes for finding some sort of second wind
for the afternoon. The latter is a shame
because the afternoon was actually not too bad
except for feeling very humid from time to
time. The net result is that I didn't do
anything I thought I might do.
I spent a lot of the day reading, and
trying to snooze, but I don't think I actually
had a snooze at any time. I recall a couple of
times when I was almost asleep and loud noises
woke me up again. Those loud noises could have
been from a few houses away where it sounded
like they were using a very large hammer drill
to break up some old concrete in the back
garden, or it could just been the kids from
the local school making their typical racket.
Other noises were possible, and did happen !
If I did one positive thing it was to
investigate an advert that appeared in The
Metro that Jodie had cut out, and used to
tempt me. The company beerhawk.co.uk seems to
have found another brewery in Ukraine that is
still brewing, and are distributing their main
beer, a lager, here. A percentage of the price
goes towards humanitarian aid for Ukraine. I
had earlier checked with Jodie to make sure
that she realised that it would probably mean
ordering a box (usually 12, but in this case,
10) of identical cans of beer.
Jodie has developed the habit of only
drinking a beer once so she can log it on the
untappd web site, but she reckoned she could
drink several of the Ukraine beers if I
ordered some. I went online and ordered a box
of them, and to meet the £50 needed for free
delivery I ordered quite a few more beers. I
took the opportunity to buy some beers just
for me...or probably just for me. They are all
English ales from around the country, but
there are probably quite a few Jodie has never
tried before. I will probably try and guess
which ones, and wait until she wants to try
them with me.
One of the problems of a day when so
very little is happening is to fight the
desire to eat. I partly failed, but I mostly
failed safe with stuff I had a reasonable
confidence would not raise my blood glucose
too high. For instance, one of my "snacks" (or
was it lunch ?) was no more than a tub of
rainbow coleslaw, made with Greek yoghurt,
with a heap of grated cheese on top. With the
tub already full of coleslaw there was little
opportunity to add too much cheese.
My dinner also featured grated cheese,
but once again not a lot of it. The biggest
ingredient was Tesco, ready prepared and
washed, mixed salad leaves with two fairly
well cooked beef burgers. A good sprinkle of
cheese added some extra flavour, although I
had let the burgers cool off a lot before
serving, and the cheese didn't melt. I should
have put the cheese on the burgers while still
cooking.
Last night was unusual in that I didn't
even bother to turn the TV on - even to check
to see if there was anything on for me to
watch. However, I did watch a lot of TV from
early yesterday evening - maybe even before
the evening started. I watched recording of
the Granada/ITV Sherlock Holmes stories with
Jeremy Brett playing Sherlock Holmes. In my
opinion they are the best adaptation of the
written stories to the screen (big or small).
I think I watched 3 45 minute (originally one
hour including adverts) episodes yesterday.
While doing so I treated myself to a few
beers.
After having a mostly lazy day I did
not expect to sleep well last night.
Fortunately that wasn't the case once I got to
sleep. It did take a while before I finally
dropped off, but I seemed to sleep very well
until about 4am this morning. By that time it
was starting to get a bit cool in my bedroom
to sleep uncovered, but it was not quite cool
enough to sleep properly covered. I seemed to
find a compromise, and I think I woke up with
my back mostly covered, but my front
uncovered.
I may have been trying to convince
myself that I felt so good this morning that I
could easily do some of the tasks I need to
do. I am not sure I succeeded, but I guess I
don't feel too bad. When I went out into the
garden to feed the birds I did seem to feel
good, but destroyed that feeling when I did
some washing up for some tools to eat
breakfast with. For reasons i don't even
bother to speculate about these days, washing
up, with my arms stretched out over the
kitchen sink, didn't feel good after a while.
There may be two bits of good news this
morning. The second hasn't happened yet, but
one has, and it concerns my blood glucose
reading. Despite thinking I had eaten more
than I would have liked to, and had drunk a
couple of bottles of some very nice strong
beer, my blood glucose reading had only risen
a tiny bit to 7.8mmol/l, and any reading
starting with a 7 I regard as being very good.
I am still waiting for the second bit
of good news, but if all goes well the beers I
ordered yesterday could be arriving today. The
last tracking info I got was that they were at
"the distribution" hub. They are in the (not
so) delicate hands of Yodel. Past experience
is that they should leave the depot a bit
later this morning, and probably arrive here
mid afternoon. This means I need to be here
ready to receive them.
That is no problem because while
the weather should be pleasant, it doesn't
look good enough to entice me out. Not only
that, but I really do need to spend some time
cleaning and polishing so much to make the
place look a bit nicer for Patricia for when
she stays here at the beginning of next week
for two nights. Of course, even staying in, I
can't let myself over work because I want to
try and get out to a gig tonight. Chain are
playing in The Swan in West Wickham, and with
today not being a rail strike day, it is a
relatively easy place to get to and from.
