Yesterday's forecast extreme rainfall
turned out to be wrong. After about 8am in
the morning a few brief sunny spells turned
into some more lengthy sunny spells by 10am.
They finished around midday, and the first
rain fell at approx 1pm, but it was only a
light shower instead of the forecast heavy
rain. Intermittent light showers continued
for hours, but there was no obvious heavy
rain until possibly after dark. At some time
in the night I thought I heard some heavy
rain, but it might have been a dream for all
I know. There was a short period in the late
morning when the temperature hit 19° C, but
generally the afternoon temperature was just
18° C.
The latest revision gives a nice
outlook than in the early version in the
screenshot above. The sunny spells that
are happening now should continue until
midday. At 1pm the sky may turn dark, and
there could be a light to medium rainfall.
The next rain could be at 3pm, and a heavy
fall is predicted. It should/could stay
dry and bright until one last light
rainfall at 6pm. The highest temperature
today could be just 17° C. Tomorrow could
also reach 17° C. It will be a generally
bright and dry until 4pm when there could
be three hours of light rain. Naturally
tomorrows forecast is pure fantasy, and
today's could also be a bit fantasy.
Yesterday was not a great
day, but it was generally OK. The only
thing I did in the morning was to shave,
shampoo and shower ready for my Wednesday
appointment in The Jolly Farmers. There
was always a microscopic chance that I
could have been joined by Angela, but I
didn't really believe it would happen, and
it didn't.
It took me a three pint session,
but I came close to finishing the cryptic
crossword, but this time I could not
complete the quick crossword. Most weeks I
can finish the quick crossword before I
finish my first pint of Guinness ! After
three pints, and over 2 hours had passed,
I called it a day, and headed to the
station to get the train back to Catford.
On this occasion I was originally thinking
of walking home, but I decided I was going
to the little supermarket on Catford
Bridge to buy some provisions.
I will admit I should have put this
picture near the top of the page because I
took it while going to the pub. It is a
picture of a train with a number I had not
seen before, and so it became another
entry in my spreadsheet of pictures of
trains and their numbers. Finding a new
train number on a class 465 train is now
getting quite a rare thing. I haven't had
a count up, but I estimate I could have 90
to 95% of them all.
I had a small imaginary shopping
list for when I went into the little
supermarket. I wanted some of their big,
but sadly rather tasteless, but also
almost sugarless tomatoes. I wanted some
Polish Sourdough bread, and some assorted
packets of instant noodles (with an
emphasis on tomato flavour). I got all
those things plus some sliced sausage
meats to put in some sandwiches, plus 4
cans of beer.
When I got home, at about 3.30pm, I
didn't have a chance to start making the
sandwiches I was looking forward to before
my phone rang. It was one of my old
friends, and one who can talk for hours
about things like buses and cellphone
transmitters ! I must admit it was nice
having a long natter, but I had to make my
excuses and go once I realised that the
first Star Trek of the evening had already
started.
I rushed down to the kitchen and
made up two sandwiches. Each contained a
squirt of mayo, sliced tomato and slices
of paprika flavoured chicken (with the
consistency of spam). I thought they were
pretty tasty for such a simple filling.
During the next commercial break during
Star Trek I went and made one more -
except this one had slices from a lump of
garlic sausage. It wasn't so nice. A
little later I had a couple of little
salad pots that I had also bought in the
little supermarket.
While I was out the man from Amazon
(I think) had delivered my new Contour
blood glucose test strips. It was only a
small packet, and her just tucked in plain
view of anyone passing, in the door
closing handle. I must admit it did look a
bit like someone had given me a used dog
poo bag until I got a bit closer ! I had
barely finished eating my dinner when I
decided to use one of the new test strips
in my old meter, and also take a reading
with my new meter. Both meters gave
identical readings of 9.6mmol/l. That was
good in that the readings were identical,
and good in that I expected a much higher
reading after having just eaten.
It seemed like as soon as the sun
set, which was 7.03pm last night, I began
to feel tired. I would have watched UFO at
8pm last night, but it seems it was
replaced by episode one of The Prisoner,
according to the listings. Just to confuse
matters further the channel I was watching
seemed to be broadcasting the wrong
channel. I think I went to bed at 8.30pm,
and I was probably asleep before 9pm.
I seemed to sleep OK for at least 3
and maybe as much as 5 hours, but
definitely at 3am I had a period of
insomnia that lasted over an hour. It was
partly caused by several bad aches. I took
a couple of Paracetamol tablets, and they
helped me get back to sleep. One reason
for waking up when I did, and maybe
another reason for not being able to get
back sleep was because of mild nightmares.
I can't remember any details apart from a
general them to these dreams.
I think they were about Saturday's
marriage between Angela and lover boy. The
idea of Angela being officially signed off
as unavailable is definitely not pleasant,
and I still have fears that it ultimately
won't be a happy marriage. However I think
they main theme of my bad dreams was to do
with photographer. Although it hasn't been
said explicitly, I think was once
ordered to go (although I have yet to get
any official confirmation) because they
wanted a decent cameraman. My dreams were
about taking the wrong lenses and other
photographic disasters.
This morning was my first chance to
do a triple blood glucose check using all
three meters. It was quite interesting,
and resulted in another theory. The new
meter gave a reading of 8.5mmol/l. That is
very average, and about what I might have
expected. The old meter read 9.0mmol/l.
The very old meter read 9.6mmol/l. That
seemed too high, and so I pricked another
finger and tried again. This time it said
8.6mmol/l, or very close to the new
meter's reading.
For a while now, since I started
taking readings with the old and new
meters, I had an idea that it was always
the second test from the same prick of
blood that was higher. Trying to take
three readings from the same bead of blood
just made what ever the problem was worse.
My new theory is that even in the first
second the blood starts to coagulate. It
still looks runny, but as it starts to
coagulate it becomes denser, or more
concentrated. That makes the glucose
content higher. Tomorrow I will test a
possible solution to the problem. I shall
prick my finger as usual, but only squeeze
out just enough blood for one reading.
I'll then attempt to squeeze out fresh
blood for each reading. Maybe I might even
wipe away the old blood before squeezing
out the next. I would hope that would
result in three very similar readings. If
so then I can revert to just a single
reading using the new meter, and that (at
the moment) has the cheapest test strips.
Apart from a little housework, the
only thing on today's agenda is another
Thursday afternoon beer tasting session. I
expect Jodie will bring more German
Oktoberfest beers over, and they are
usually very nice. Michael keeps
threatening to bring over some German
beer, and maybe he might bring it this
afternoon, although often what he think is
a "rare" beer is one Jodie and I have
already had years ago, although I will be
very happy to drink it even if Jodie
isn't.
