Both
weather forecasters I consult,
agree that there may now only be
sunny spells this afternoon. It
is possible that it could be
worse by following the pattern
of the last few days, and some
hours in the afternoon could end
up cloudy. The temperature may
peak at 29
°
C (Met Office) or just
28
° C
(BBC). It is the BBC that
shows an interesting thing
when you expand an hour on
their forecast. It say that
for a few hours, starting at
1pm, it may feel like
33° C !
This short run of high summer
ends tomorrow. There will be a
few hours of sunshine, and a
few hours of sunny spells, but
also quite a few hours when it
will be cloudy. It will be a
fair bit cooler with just 34° C expected.
Yesterday was a
curious day. It was a day when
what should have happened
didn't, and what should not have
happened did happen. It was all
because I was feeling unusually
good. I prepared to go out. I
washed my hair and had a shower,
and almost started to get
dressed to go out, but after the
shampoo, shower, and blowing my
hair dry, I felt too hot to get
dressed straight away.
I decided to lay on my
bed and read while I cooled off
a bit. It was then that the
magic of feeling unusually good
came into it's own. Part of it
was having a great sleep, and so
not feeling tired. I lay there
reading, and feeling very
uncomfortable. I read quite a
few pages and realised that my
eyelids were not drooping. It is
hard to explain why it felt so
wonderful, but I dismissed the
idea of going out.
I even dismissed the idea
of going to get a bit of
shopping. There were a few
things I might have liked to
have bought if I had gone out,
but none were essential. My
whole day was not just reading
and relaxing. I did take a bit
of time to do a few
inconsequential things, and and
also to prepare food. The meal
needing the most preparation was
actually lunch, and it was
halfway between a slightly heavy
lunch, and a light dinner.
One thing in the fridge
that I was keen to use up
because it had been there for
almost a week, was a pack of
quarter pounder (although I am
not sure they were actually that
big) beef burgers. There were
four in the pack, and I grilled
two of them. I had a choice of
several possible accompaniments,
but I thought some "microwave in
two minutes" rice might be a
good idea. I had "Louisiana
style dirty rice" - rice with
black beans and some chopped
peppers in it. It made for a
tasty lunch, and although
grilled, and so not very greasy,
the rice soaked up the grease
nicely.
With the benefit of
hindsight, it might have been OK
to eat that burgers and rice as
an evening meal without having
to worry too much about
indigestion of the heartburn
type. My dinner last night was
just a single tub of ice cream.
It was an alleged low calorie
ice cream, but it's sugar
content was quite high. I also
had an earlier cross between a
very light meal, and a snack. It
was some rice crackers with some
rather nice (possibly) cave aged
red Leicester cheese on it.
By turning on my TV early
to check what would be on later,
I discovered that Sky Mix are
currently showing three lots of
Star Trek between their
excessive adverts and
promotional stuff. I ended up
watching one episode of Star
Trek: Enterprise, one episode of
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and
one episode of Star Trek:
Voyager. Of course they were all
repeats, but I seemed unfamiliar
with two of them.
There was an hours gap
between the Star Treks and the
next thing I watched, an episode
of QIXL, and I filled in the
time with more reading. By that
time I was feeling less
comfortable laying on my bed and
reading. I seemed to get hints
of so discomfort from my sternum
and scar tissue. It wasn't a
lot, and while I watched QIXL I
barely noticed it, but at 9pm I
turned the TV off,, and went to
bed. Then the discomfort was
restarted, and seemed to be
worse.
I tried simple remedies
for heartburn and angina, but
nothing helped until I took some
ordinary paracetamol. That
helped a bit, and a little later
a couple of Ibuprofen gave more
relief. Ibuprofen is an
anti-inflammatory, and the help
that gave strongly suggested my
discomfort was to return of
flare up from my operation scar
tissue. I'm not sure what
triggered it unless it was
eating obviously very cold ice
cream earlier.
The pain, even at it's
strongest could hardly be called
bad pain, but it was still very
intrusive when trying to get to
sleep. I don't think the pain
had gone away completely when it
may have been overtaken by
tiredness, and I think I may
have finally fallen asleep soon
after 11pm. The very peculiar
thing is that I feel like I did
not get a good sleep, and yet I
can only remember waking up for
very short periods of time, and
possibly only a couple of times.
In theory I slept well, but it
just didn't/doesn't feel that
way.
One thing I don't seem to
remember doing is waking up for
a pee more than once or twice,
and I even managed to turn over
and go back to sleep at just
gone 6am because it felt like I
deserved more sleep. When I woke
up after 7am I most definitely
needed a pee, but it still
didn't seem to be a very urgent
desire. Of course last night was
a very hot and sticky night (I
even resorted to using a fan for
some of the night) and I
released a lot of moisture as
sweat. My pillow was very wet
this morning !
Of course the significance
of my apparent lack of peeing in
the night (I could have gone
more times almost on autopilot,
and completely forgotten about
it) is in relation to my
diabetic condition. High blood
glucose does make you pee (and
sweat) more. Although I
definitely sweated, it didn't
seem that I peed much, and that
should indicate I was going to
get a nice low blood glucose
reading this morning. I didn't !
Actually it was not too
bad. The Contour meter read
8.1mmol/l, and the GlucoRX meter
read 8.0mmol/l. For a long time,
but not for the last few months
or more, I would celebrate these
readings as below expectations,
and thus very good. These days
my target is 7.5mmol/l, and
oddly enough that was exactly
what the Sinocare meter read.
While my blood glucose readings
were "satisfactory", I am not so
sure about my blood glucose. A
systolic pressure of 113mmHg is
pretty good, bit a diastolic
pressure of 61mmHg is a bit
unusually high, but nothing
terrible (I hope).
It being a Wednesday, my
prime plan for today is to head
to The Jolly Farmers at
lunchtime for my usual couple of
pints of Guinness. It is
possible that Dik may join me to
buy me a threatened birthday
pint. I haven't heard anything
to suggest it might happen, but
I guess it is possible that if
Kevin is in the area he could
join me too. At that rate it
could be a 3 or 4 pints
lunchtime.
My plans for the rest of
the day could be easily
distorted by extra pints of
Guinness, but if I am mostly
sober, and at home by 3pm then
things get a little bit
predictable. I'll probably have
a snooze followed by a very
early dinner of the last two
beef burgers from the fridge,
and maybe this time I'll have
coleslaw and potato salad with
them. That almost promises I'll
get bad indigestion, and so the
earlier dinner is, the more time
I'll have to get over it before
going to bed.
