The Met Office forecast is
simple to describe. It says
mist for all 24 hours, and a
maximum temperature of 12°
C. As far as I can see there
is no more than a slight
haze towards the horizon.
The BBC forecast is a lot
like yesterday except the
sunny spells are shown as
starting as late as 2pm. If,
like yesterday, they start
earlier, say midday, they
could make the rather low
13° C feel OK. Today should
be dry, and so will
tomorrow. Tomorrow may
actually be a single degree
warmer at 14° C, but at the
moment only a single hour,
4pm, may feature a sunny
spell. The Met Office say
tomorrow will be misty
except for the afternoon,
and that will feature thick
dark cloud.
Yesterday was a good
day for several reasons. One
was some good news from
Angela. Her doctors realised
she could not handle the
chemo therapy, and have
stopped it. That made Angela
very happy. She will
continue to have
radiotherapy. The other good
news, in simplified form, is
I got some fresh air !
As I think I
mentioned yesterday morning,
I seemed to feel not exactly
good, but better than
recently. At that time it
was not due to the weather,
because it was still rather
dull, but maybe it was some
stupid faith that it might
be a lot better later on -
and it was. I had a warm
shower, and got myself
dressed. By then, and it was
before midday if I recall
properly, we had the first
sunny spell. From then on
they got longer and longer.
It was time to grab
my camera, and new leather
jacket and go for a walk. It
was the first time I have
worn, as opposed to trying
on, the new leather jacket,
and it was good. It felt
nice and comfortable,
although I will admit that I
had no reason to zip up the
front for this walk. I
didn't seem to overheat in
it even when the sun was on
my back. I think I have
finally found the leather
jacket I wanted.
I started out with
little ambition of walking
very far. I thought that the
maximum I would attempt was
to go as far as the hospital
before returning. My
thoughts were that I have an
appointment at the hospital
(diabetic eye check) next
week, and it would be good
to know I could make that
far with not too much
trouble.
In a way I cheated
because I tried to keep my
walking fairly slow, and as
can be seen in the picture
on the left, I only managed
1.33 mph. That would be a
very slow walk by itself,
but much of the reason was
because I would stop to take
a photo, or at least check
to see what the view was
like through the viewfinder,
at least every 5 minutes.
All those stops meant
that my angina pains never
really got too
uncomfortable, but I was
kept very aware I was right
on the edge many times. In
some ways it was a bit like
heartburn, which can be very
painful at times, but I knew
that the burning sensation
in my chest was probably not
that because it extended up
my neck, and gave me a
sensation not unlike
toothache. It also got as
far as the shoulder blades,
but my short pauses stopped
it getting bad enough to go
down the arms.
Yesterday I used my
Canon 600D camera, and that
is generally a very good
camera, but I was
disappointed on two counts.
I had my Tamron 28 to 300mm
telephoto lens on it. In
proper bright weather, and
taking snaps of big things
like trains, it has taken
really good snaps in the
past. However, like the
Tamron lens I used on my
Nikon cameras, it seemed to
give a sort of soft focus in
less than ideal light. I
also had a lot of problem,
by my own incompetence,
going from brightly lit to
poorly lit snaps.
These daisies
surprised me. I thought that
the autumn weather would
have stopped them growing,
but I saw a lot all over the
park. This is one of those
pictures taken in low light,
and looking very slightly
out of focus. I think it is
more a soft focus effect of
the Tamron lens.
I think I was too
late to get the best autumn
colours. Most trees whose
leaves turn red had shed
nearly all their leaves, but
this clump of 2 or 3 trees
did have a wonderful display
of golden leaves still.
It is not very
spectacular but here's a few
more trees in their autumn
colours.
I was walking along
the path that bordered the
river bank when I spotted
something orange laying on
the leaf litter. It was this
rail ticket, and it was sort
of interesting. It had been
bought just two days
earlier, at Stanstead
Airport station, and here it
was in Catford. It's
destination was 30 or 40
miles from Catford at Audley
end. I thought it was also
interesting that it was a
Daytime Single ticket, and
it was bought using an adult
Railcard.
I found this single
red leaf hanging from some
red looking twigs. I am not
sure it was actually
attached to the twig. It
looks like it is already
starting to decay.
It doesn't require
much patience, which is good
because I haven't got a lot,
to see a squirrel in a nice
pose in the park.
I've seen it so many
times before, and so I don't
know why it is still a
surprise to see blackberries
still growing in November. I
found this small bunch
showing green, red and fully
ripe black.
I can easily believe
bight yellow berries in
November, and probably
December as well, I have no
idea what these berries are,
but I have an idea that if
eaten they could give a
terrible stomach upset or
worse.
I was surprised when
I convinced myself to walk
further than I thought I
would. For this picture I
walked into Ladywell
Village, and passed the
station without picking up a
copy of The Metro. I only
thought about it after I had
gone toon far past the
station to consider going
back. The subject of the
picture is a brand new, and
only recently built by the
look of it, Sainsbury's
Local store. I am pretty
sure there was a long
disused petrol station there
the last time I passed it.
It may look a bit
grubby on the outside, but
this is one of my favourite
places to order shish kebabs
from. It may even be in the
top three, although it does
rather depend on the day,
the hours and which chef is
doing the cooking. I have
had a few not so good kebabs
from there.
This amusing
political cartoon is painted
on the doors where I think
fresh beer is delivered
around the back of The
Ladywell Tavern.
This is a new feature
in Ladywell Fields. At first
sight it looks like it has
some big mature trees, but
those are behind it. All the
trees and shrubs in it,
apparently 600 of them, are
still very small. In time I
can imagine the biggest
crowding the rest out. By
the time I got here I was
after the halfway mark, and
not feeling keen enough to
explore inside. I was
looking forward to finish
the walk and getting some
proper rest.
I had almost given up
trying to find something new
to photograph when I saw the
brilliant, almost glowing
read and yellow of the bill
of this moorhen. I had to
use the full zoom on my lens
to get it, and it lacks some
detail, but those bright
colours really stand out
under the light shade of the
trees on the riverbank.
I was quite glad to
get home. My chest had been
mildly aching for most of
the walk, and my legs were
telling me I had walked to
far. As far as my legs are
concerned, I am well out of
practice. It takes me back
to when I was building my
stamina by doing shorter
walks than this. It was some
time before a 1.8 mile walk
became routine. It is a
shame that while I can
probably build up my leg
muscles again, I don't think
it is going to do anything
for the blocked or narrowed
arteries feeding blood to
the peripheral parts of my
heart. It was nice to be
able to do the walk, but I
don't think I can say I
actually enjoyed it.
As soon as I got home
I put some lunch, a quite
big sort of lunch, in the
oven to cook. It was, as in
the picture on the left,
garlic and herb chicken
Kievs. The best thing was
that the whole pack (2
pieces) only contained 3gm
of sugar. Sadly the fat and
saturates are shown as in
the red ! I am not sure
whether "only" 804 calories
is good or not. Probably not
!
While lunch was
cooking I transferred the
photos I took to my PC for
selection and editing. My
first few photos seemed to
be bad shots - often just
very poorly, and even
disastrously framed. It
seems that not only where my
legs rusty, but so were my
photographic skills. I did
get the hang of it after the
first 10 shots, although I
still partly blame that
Tamron lens for the quality
of some shots. That Tamron
lens is still probably quite
good for train photography
on a sunny day, but I don't
think I'll risk it on
wildlife again.
I ate my lunch, and
then had a lie down. It felt
good to completely relax,
although maybe I got too
relaxed. I read a few pages
from my book, and then my
eyelids started to droop. I
think I may have had a half
hour snooze before I got
back to my "digital
darkroom" to process most of
the photos.
I had them all done
by the time dinner time came
around. I think I had a very
small snack before dinner,
but dinner itself was just
two cans of soup. I am
starting like just having
soup for dinner. Now
admittedly I did pep up both
cans with hot chilli/pepper
sauce, but later on I didn't
seem t get any heartburn
when I tried for sleep.
maybe it was just all the
fresh air, but it didn't
seem to take a lot of effort
to fall asleep. It does take
too much effort to remember
when that was. It might have
been before 10pm.
There are two bits of
dream I remember. One was
about meeting people for a
drink. I was supposed to be
meeting an old (and in real
life now dead) friend in
Bromley, but I found myself
in a pub that was where the
Fellowship Inn is on
Bellingham, even though it
looked more like the Catford
Bridge Tavern on the inside
and outside. I phoned my
friend and suggested he got
the train for the couple of
stops to Bellingham station.
It didn't seem long
before he arrived, and we
had a nice beer together
then I seemed to forget he
was there. I and a different
friend were called over to
the bar by the governor of
the pub. He said he had two
envelopes for us. Inside
mine was about £200 in £20
notes, and a message saying
that for all the help
setting up my business. It
is doing better than
expected, and so with great
thinks you can have a share
of the profits.
My friend go
something very similar. The
odd thing is that we were
both mentioned by full name
in the message, and yet we
couldn't remember who it
might have been from. I had
a strong feeling it might
have been a young woman we
both knew, but who exactly,
and what we had done to help
her start her business, or
even what her business was,
was a mystery,
Another dream
featured an appearance of
Angela. I am not sure
exactly where I was, but I
knew quite a few people as
musicians. Suddenly I heard
someone say Angela is here !
She came into the room, and
sat down beside me. she was
talking on her phone so we
couldn't talk at that time.
She gradually edged nearer
to me until she was almost
resting her head on my
shoulder. She stayed talking
on her phone and so there
was little I could do. I
wanted to talk to her about
her cancer treatment, and
doubly so when I saw her
hands. It was as if her
finger tips had been dipped
in acid. They were brown,
wrinkled, and had bits of
skin missing in a few
places. It looked painful
and horrid. I assumed it was
the result of the
chemotherapy.
I got up at just
after 6am, and I seemed to
feel better than I thought.
I thought the walk would
leave some sort of legacy,
and the absence of that
seemed to be the good thing.
I had a nice pee, but no
poo, and then weighed
myself. I seemed to have
lost 400gm this morning, and
that seemed very good. I
don't think the energy used
on the walk was anywhere
near enough to account for
that, but maybe it tamed my
appetite more than I
thought.
With my weight being
less, was there any chance
that my blood glucose might
be down too. The surprising
answer was yes ! The Contour
meter read a very good
7.9mmol/l. That was the only
meter with a reading low
enough to go in the light
green, fairly good, zone.
The GlucoRX meter read
8.1mmol/l, which is really
not much higher. Even the
new Exactive (Chinese) meter
read a reasonably OK
8.4mmol/l. I also took a
reading on the Sinocare
meter, but didn't include it
is my spreadsheet of
results. It too was well
behaved with a reading of
8.0.
I have been
contemplating the idea of
going out again today. I
know I should because it
could be good for me in
several ways, but the odds
against are not looking
good. One thing against it
is the simple, but old old
story of being constipated
again. There is no
discomfort apart from the
fear that I become
uncomfortable while a long
way from a toilet. Another
slight problem is that
despite saying I felt mostly
OK after yesterday's walk,
that "mostly" does not
include a sore bunion. I
should have put something
more substantial over it
when I went out. I actually
used a small sticking
plaster, and that slipped
and seems to have caused
more problem than it solved.
Another negative,
although it seems to be
fading quite quickly, is
that I slightly hurt my back
just now while trying to
pull a rug straight. Maybe
the biggest negative is that
it is already nearly
11.30am, and the sky looks
dreadful outside. I think I
am very confident it won't
rain, but the air is going
to be cold enough to hurt my
chest, and the light is
going to be awful enough to
make for poor photos. Maybe
the sun might break through
at 2pm, as per the forecast
(and latest revision), and I
might revise my ideas then,
but by then I may have lost
interest anyway !
