Yesterday
started off very dull, but by mid
afternoon the sun broke through, and
it was rather nice, or at least
cheerful. The temperature was
predicted to rise to just 21° C, and
while that is not very warm, it did
feel very warm in direct sunshine.
Yesterday's prediction for
today included at least one
thunderstorm, but this morning's
version of the forecast shows only
some light rain for 4 and 5pm when the
thunderstorm was supposed to happen.
This morning is bright, but there is
still enough cloud to stop any direct
rays of sunshine for now, but it is
the sort of cloud that has random gaps
in it, and could break up to allow
bigger gaps. Maybe there will be sunny
spells later, and maybe the afternoon
will be dull, but I suspect it is
going to be mostly pot luck today. The
afternoon will probably reach 22° C,
and while not wonderful, it is
satisfactory. Tomorrow may start
with some sunny spells, but the
afternoon may see some light showers.
Once again the temperature may reach
21° C. We still have to wait for next
Wednesday or Thursday for some warm
sunny weather.
Yesterday was a good, but
tiring day. It was Petts Wood Calling
day, and I managed a nearly 7 hour
stint there, but I was fast asleep in
bed before the last band, Glamstar,
would have been much more than halfway
through their set. It was the getting
there, and getting home again that was
the most tiring bit.
I finished off yesterday saying
that the next thing I would be doing
was shaving, washing my hair, and
showering. That was not quite correct
because I realised, or at least hoped,
that I had time for a quick rest after
I had finished writing. I think I
allowed myself half an hour, although
I wasn't really timing things. After
my rest I did my ablutions, and then
started to get dressed ready to go out
- once I had cooled off a bit after
the warm shower.
It was my intention to get the
11:35am train from Catford station.
That is a little further than Catford
Bridge, and I knew I would need a
short rest, maybe no longer than 30
seconds, when I got as far as Catford
Bridge station. I left in plenty of
time, but it didn't seem to feel like
that. Maybe I tried to rush, and I was
barely halfway to Catford Bridge
station when I had to stop because my
legs were aching, and I had that
shortness of breath feeling that isn't
actually shortness of breath.
If I had walked just a little
bit slower I may have made it to
Catford Bridge without stopping, but
that first stop made me think I might
miss the train, and so I tried walking
a bit faster. That just slowed me down
because I then had to stop more
frequently. I think I stopped at least
4 times on the way to Catford station.
I was very glad that the lifts were
working when I got there. After
getting the lift to platform level I
found I still had near 4 minutes to
wait for my train.
If I had walked a fraction
slower I would still have made it to
the station on time, and I might have
felt less exhausted, and less annoyed
at having to keep stopping ! It was
nice to sit on the train as far as
Shortlands station where I changed
trains for one going to Petts Wood. In
that direction it is only a 4 minute
wait to change trains, but rather
longer in the other direction.
I made use of the lifts at
Petts Wood station, and then started
walking to the Memorial Gardens for
Petts Wood Calling - except being
entitled to a back stage pass I went
to the entrance from the car park. No
matter how bad I have felt in the
past, I have never had to stop, and
stop twice, walking from the station
to the entrance. I was feeling in a
very bad way ! However, once I got my
wrist band, and went into the green
room to put my rucksack down (which
was extra heavy with two cameras in
it) I began to feel more relaxed, and
better.
I had arrived at least 15
minutes before the first band were due
on, and I have could have a small
breather before heading out to the
front of the stage to take many, many
photos during the day. I have no idea
how many I took, but I would not be
surprised if it wasn't something like
500 photos. There are two reasons for
such a high number. One was that I was
using two cameras - my main big Nikon,
and a slightly lower spec Nikon with
either a fish eye lens or a zoom lens
on it. The other reason for so many
photos was because I was in a sort of
unspoken competition with a master
photographer, and I wanted to make
sure that I had at least a few good
shots among those I took.
By about 6:45pm I felt like I
was on my last legs, and decided to
throw in the towel. I had arrived
there at about 12:15pm, and so I guess
I was there for about six and a half
hours - slightly longer than last
Sunday's Chatt Fest....I think.. Oddly
enough, it was the same band, Ferrets,
who were on when I headed home. On
both occasions their uplifting classic
punk songs made me hang on as long as
possible.
During what seemed a long day
to me, I was bought a pint of Stout
from One In The Wood, who were
providing the beer tent. It was bought
for me by Jo Woodstock. Sadly it was a
poor substitute for Guinness, and I
didn't really enjoy it. Later on I
wandered off to The Daylight Inn
for a real pint of Guinness. I think
it was just before I walked to the pub
that I stopped to take off my right
shoe. That particular shoe seems to
collect flints, or in this case some
sort of hard tree seed, like no other
shoe I have ever worn.
It was no wonder my feet were
getting sore - my right foot in
particular. Just before I walked to
the station to go home I had to empty
another, but different type, of hard
tree seed out of my right shoe. It was
about the same size as a dried pea.
That made walking less painful, but I
still struggled to walk to the
station. I think I stopped at least
once to get my breath back.
When I got to the station I
thought I had missed a train. I was
down the stairs far enough that I was
almost level with the front of the
train, and the driver signalled that
he would wait if I hurried. I
signalled that he could go without me.
It was only after I was at platform
level that I realised it was not a
train I could use. The next train was
about 12 minutes away, and it called
at Lewisham station. I would change
there, with a 5 minute wait, for a
train back to Catford Bridge.
I felt like I was on my last
legs when I walked from Catford Bridge
back to home. It was only the thought
that I had several things ready to
instantly eat sitting in the fridge
that kept me going. Once I was home I
grabbed a twin pack of cheese and
onion pastie type things from the
fridge, and then almost limped my way
up the stairs. I stripped down to my
underpants and weighed myself. A day
without eating (after breakfast early
in the morning) and not much to drink,
meant I had lost a fair bit of weight
- which I expected to be just
temporary.
Maybe that temporary weight
loss meant I was a bit cavalier with
what I ate. The two cheese and onion
pasties were probably unhealthy, and
definitely were after I used a fair
bit of very high sugar tomato ketchup
on them to try and improve the very
bland flavour. I next had a small tub
of spiral pasta with cheese and pine
nuts. It was rather nice, and may not
have been too unhealthy for me.
I almost rounded my weird
dinner off with the last two scoops of
caramelised biscuit ice cream from my
freezer. That stuff was definitely
very nice, but I have to eat that with
care because of it's sugar content.
That was almost all I ate, but I had
to take a few things out of my camera
bag, and one of those was a small
re-sealable plastic box with some
ginger biscuits in it. I think I had
put 6 or 7 biscuits in it, and I had
only eaten two while I was out. I
scoffed the other 4 or 5 five shortly
before going to bed.
I didn't feel I had the energy
to even get my camera outs, and
definitely not enough to copy the
pictures from them to my computer. It
was about 9pm, just as Glamstar would
be taking to the stage, when I decided
I was so tired that I would go to bed.
I got on my bed, and picked up my
book. I thought I would read a couple
of pages before trying for sleep, but
I didn't get as far as opening the
book. I put the book down again,
turned out the light, and I would be
surprised if I was not fast asleep by
9.30pm.
I seemed to sleep well last
night, but I was still getting up
every 1 to 3 hours to have a pee, and
it did seem I was peeing a lot on each
occasion. I had turned the heater on
low, with the thermostat set to about
"just right" (probably), before I went
to bed, and I don't recall feeling too
cool or too hot at any time in the
night. For once it seems my guess
thermostat setting of "just right" was
indeed right.
I woke at just after 5am, and I
thought I would not be able to sleep
again, but it was just like in
the night when getting up for a pee. I
got back to my bed, and seemed to fall
asleep again with no delay at all.
Maybe I could have done the same when
I woke up at about 6:30am, but I
decided to get up - although I would
not be surprised to have a snooze
after I have finished writing this.
I was almost forced to get up
at 6:30am because even though I had
had a pee just 90 minutes earlier, I
most definitely needed to get to the
toilet, and it was not to poo. That
didn't happen, and I have a feeling it
may not happen until midday at the
earliest. I definitely had a pee and
it was a big one. When I got on the
scales I found I had lost an amazing
1.3kg. Some of that was because my
left leg, which was puffy from water
retention, was no longer puffy this
morning. I have no idea how long this
will last, but I think I know the
reason for this morning.
I had eaten several things with
a high sugar content late yesterday
evening, and so I was expecting my
blood glucose to be very high this
morning. That would explain the
extreme amount of peeing I had been
doing through the night. It was a semi
pleasing thought to see my blood
glucose was not dangerously high. In
fact two or my meters, the Contour and
GlucoRX meters agreed that my blood
glucose was only 8.8mmol/l. That is a
bit higher than ideal, but not that
bad. The third meter, the Contour
Plus, which must use a different way
to measure glucose content, did give a
very high reading, but still just
under the red line by the skin of it's
teeth. It read 9.9mmol/l.
Now I come to the interesting
of what I am going to do today. In an
ideal world I would capitalise on my
weight loss by going for a nice
healthy walk in the hazy sunshine (if
that lasts for a few more hours), but
my legs still feel stiff, I can't be
bothered, and more importantly, I have
other things I should be doing. One
definite will be a beer tasting
session with Jodie from mid afternoon.
That will probably lead on to excess
eating, and most of my weight loss
will be blown away like a fart in a
thunderstorm.
Other semi definite things will
be to transfer pictures form both
cameras I used yesterday onto my PC
ready for selecting and editing the
best. I have no intention of doing any
more than giving them a quick glance
today. If I find the enthusiasm and
time for any photo editing it will be
of the pictures I took a week ago at
Chatt Fest. I feel that I am more like
to be lazy at a professional level
during any spare time I might have.
