Today will be
another very cold day. My thermometers
generally agree it is currently 0.8° C
(but one says 0.5° C). From the
start of the afternoon the temperature
should rise to 4° C, but it will quickly
fall back to 2° C at sunset. At the
moment the sky is mostly blue, but the
sun hasn't risen high enough to clear
the roofs of the nearby houses. Once it
does we should have a lot of sunshine,
albeit cold sunshine until just before
sunset. It should look nice from behind
glass, but outside it will be cold
enough to freeze the nuts off a brass
monkey ! At the moment it is looking
like tomorrow will see a similar
temperature range, although there will
be far, far less sunshine. The day after
tomorrow might feature about the closest
we can expect to a heatwave - a whole
10° C !
I described everything worth describing
about yesterday morning yesterday
morning when I started to write late in
the morning. Not a lot happened from
then on until about 3pm when Jodie came
over to have a beer drinking session.
Before that I had made two decisions.
The most important was that Jodie could
come over because there was no way I was
going to go to the Petts Wood Xmas
carnival.
The was partly because the
organisers had done a very poor job
advertising it, and had said almost
nothing about the live music being
performed. The only information was that
there would be "live music", but no
information about what and where. It
wasn't until a few hours after it all
started that I started to see some
pictures and video on social media. It
was Matt Hemsley's stage on the back of
a low loader, as per previous Xmas
carnivals, and I also noted the weather
looked absolutely foul with what could
almost have been sleet falling.
The forecast weather was the
other, and maybe more important reason I
decided not to go. I can't seem to
handle the cold like I used to. It is
probably another symptom of the passing
years. The other thing I saw, when
checking the video and pictures on
social media, was that much of the
entertainment was Xmas orientated. If I
wanted to hear Xmas songs I would go to
Tesco !
As I mentioned yesterday, I
started the day with a very high blood
glucose level. Prior to about 1pm, and
despite it feeling so cold, I had
avoided eating anything, but I knew I
couldn't keep that up for much longer,
and I certainly didn't fancy drinking on
an empty stomach. I had a couple of big
bowls of instant noodles that I had
bought in Poundstretcher earlier on. It
was a make I don't think I had seen
previously, and so I was curious as to
what they were like.
On the whole they were not that
good. There was nothing particularly
negative about them, but neither was
there anything positive to say about
them. One almost positive thing is that
they appeared to be low sugar, but
appearances can be deceptive. It must
have been an hour, or maybe 90 minutes
later that I checked my blood glucose
again, and I have never, ever seen it
that high before.
That hight blood glucose didn't
stop me enjoying quite a few beers with
Jodie. The curious thing was that I
found some lagers to be a bit bitter,
and yet some beers designed to be very
bitter were not very bitter tasting, and
just about enjoyable. Whether my blood
glucose had any bearing on that seems
unlikely, but it did seem like an odd
coincidence. I'm not sure how many beers
we tried, but considering each
bottle/can was split two ways so we
could both taste it, it was probably not
much more than two pints consumed. That
was topped up with a couple of small
shots of spirits to end the session.
I was possibly very slightly
tipsy, but less so than on a few recent
sessions. I was definitely sober enough
to be very careful about what I ate for
dinner. I was possibly helped by not
having many temptations in the fridge,
although there were one or two things I
could have cooked, but I chose the safe
way and just had a few cans of soup -
although not very low sugar soups - just
sort of averagely low.
The soups warmed me up nicely,
and would have been good if just before
bed, but last night seemed to have a few
TV programmes that were worth watching.
I think the final one, an episode of
QIXL, ended at 9pm, and I headed for bed
then. I intended to, and did read for at
least an hour before turning out the
light. Before I started reading I
noticed something before I got into
bed....
This picture is a rather
unpleasant close up of part of my foot,
and is centred on my left little toe. A
few days back I was complaining that my
left little toe was sore after kicking
one of my boots as I went for a pee in
the middle of the night. Until later
yesterday I had not noticed, maybe even
never looking for bruising, but it was
very evident last night. I also note a
small split on the side of the toenail.
On top of that I also not how dry and
scaly my foot is when viewed in close
up. I suppose it needs a good scrub, and
then some moisturiser cream. I have a
feeling that is unlikely to happen.
I had one short period, maybe not
much more than 10 minutes, of insomnia
last night (although it felt longer than
that). Other than that I seemed to sleep
well, and seemed to wake for a pee far
less than some nights - which suggests
my blood glucose was not high. In fact
there as at least one time when I woke
up, and automatically went for a pee,
but it was obvious once I got to the
toilet that I hardly needed to go at
all. There is a reason for mentioning
all this that will become apparent in
the next paragraph or two.
I seem to recall three bits of
dreams, and none of them were sort of
happy dreams. The worst was just a
fragment of a dream where I was trying
to shake off a small, poodle like dof
who was trying to mate with my bare foot
! Another dream did have a sort of
nostalgic element to it. It was about
waking up in a bedroom, a bit like the
bedroom I slept in as a child, and
finding the curtains stuck to the
windows by frost. I can remember as kid
finding thick frost on the inside of the
windows. It seemed amusing rather than
cold.
The other dream was quite
strange. It concerned an award winning
small block of flats. I can't really
describe it, but it was something like
it having a two level open, but covered,
roof space, and it was reported that one
level had a large model railway in it. I
remembered that I had visited it soon
after it's opening day, and a couple,
proud to live in such a modern flat were
more than happy to show me around it.
What I really wanted to see was this
open roof space, and in the dream I was
visiting for a second time.
I had walked there from a railway
station I couldn't remember when someone
asked how I got there. The place had
changed a bit since my first visit, and
seemed to be full of hippies or eco
warriors. They were happy that I had
walked 4 miles to get there rather than
coming by car, and were more inclined to
help me. The only trouble is that no one
had any idea how to get up into the roof
space. The only stairs seemed to go up
about 8ft, and then come down again.
There also seemed to be no way into the
large basement that was rumoured to
exist. I asked the people I met if there
were staircases going up or down in
their flats, but they said no. It
was all a bit frustrating.
This morning I woke just after
5am, and turned the heating up full
before going for a pee, and then going
back to bed. When I woke up at about
6.45am it was reasonably warm in my
bedroom while my outside thermometers
were saying it was just 0.8° C outside.
It was a good time to get up because by
the time I had been to the toilet, and
checked my blood glucose it was light
outside. That made the day seem better -
particularly with the promise of blue
sky once the sun had risen a bit more.
It was with great trepidation
that I checked my blood glucose. I was
prepared for a shock, but not in the
direction I was fearing. This morning,
thanks to some sensible eating
yesterday, my blood glucose was down to
7.2mmol/l, or 0.3 under my hoped for
target. That left me guilt free when I
decided to have two bowls of instant
noodles for breakfast. They helped me
warm up a bit, and the sunshine now
coming through my bedroom windows is
doing it's part as well. I have just
turned the heater down to half.
By tradition Sunday's are very
boring and tedious, and I see no reason
to break with that tradition. I may pop
out to Tesco once I have had a shower,
and that will help pass half an hour. I
am contemplating the idea of going for a
walk in the sunshine. The last time I
tried it (last Wednesday) it didn't work
out well. That makes me less
enthusiastic about trying to go for a
walk today, but if a quick walk to Tesco
doesn't feel too bad I may attempt a
longer walk.
