This morning it is
12° C, but with no supporting sunshine it
feels just as cold as yesterday's 9° C. The
chance of any sun today looks slim in the
extreme. In fact the latest revision to the
forecast has changed 4 and 5pm to dark grey
clouds. There is only a 10% chance of rain at
any time today, and that make me think that it
will probably rain at some time today. The
highest temperature will be 17° C - which will
still feel cold with no sunshine.
Tomorrow may reach 18° C, but with only a
small of a sunny spell at 8am it will be as
dull and cold as today.
Time again to decide if yesterday was a
good day, or a bad day....or something in
between. Maybe it was the latter - bits were
good, and others less so. The very worst thing
was the horrendously high blood glucose
reading in the morning. I still had a most
enjoyable breakfast of reheated naan bread
with a vegetable curry side dish on it.
It might have been an hour after eating
that breakfast that I rechecked my blood
glucose, and it was, as expected, a couple of
points higher still. I had already
decided to fast after breakfast until dinner
time, and even then try for quite a light
dinner. Then a very odd thing happened. It
must have been around 5pm, and before I
started drinking some strong, and also sweet
beers, that I rechecked my blood glucose. I
couldn't believe that it had dropped right
down to a splendid 7.0mmol/l.
Apart from some washing up, and a bit
of tidying, I didn't really do much all
morning, and into the afternoon as I waited
for Jodie to arrive for a beer tasting
session. She had been at her late parents
house (currently being done up so she and her
boyfriend can live there), and there is only a
very poor bus service there that usually
arrives at Elmers End railway station just
after the train has left. Jodie took the bus
to where it meets the 54 bus route, and got a
54 to Catford.
She arrived about two hours later than
usual, but she seemed happy enough -
particularly when she saw some of the new
beers I recently bought. One of the beers was
one she had been wanting to try for a while.
It was a very strong, and almost syrupy stout
brewed by Omnipollo. I think I must have been
drunk, or maybe just feeling generous when I
made that order. That one 330ml can cost £10
!!! It was exceedingly nice, but I am not sure
it was worth that much.
The other exceptional beer was a fruit
based beer. I can only describe it as like
equal parts of Ribena and vodka mixed
together. Once again it was very strong (in
the region of 10%), and it was sort of very
nice. I did find the fruitiness was making my
cheeks shrink (or something like that), and I
don't think I could manage a full pint of
it. There were a couple of other good
beers, but not in the same stature as the two
described.
Jodie left to catch the 7.20pm train,
an hour later than the usual train she tends
to get, and I started to get my dinner
together. After the low blood glucose reading
before I started drinking, I was not quite as
strict with my food selection. For instance I
started with a can of lentil soup which I
floated a couple of cheese and onion burger
patties in. Part two was a can of
"chicken casserole". I am unsure of the sugar
content of the latter, but I doubt I would
have bought it is it wasn't fairly low.
Both parts of my dinner were liberally
doused with hot chilli sauce. That would
become significant not too much later. There
was bugger all on TV last night, and I was
feeling quite drowsy after the booze and hot
soups. I was probably in bed not long after
8.30pm, and feeling so drowsy that I don't
think I even bothered to read a single page of
the book I am reading. Prior to going to bed I
was feeling nice and warm for the first time
of the day.
A belly full of hot soup, and lashings
of chilli sauce acted as wonderful central
heating. It also made me feel a bit
sweaty. I didn't realise it the time,
because I was asleep, but being under the
duvet amplified that hot feeling. I can be
sure, but I may have slept solidly for over
three hours, but when I woke up I found the
pillow and duvet cold and damp with sweat. Of
course by that time I had cooled down, and I
just felt cold. I had to flip the duvet over
side to side to sleep under the dry side, and
I did the same for the pillow.
There was a moment when I worried it
might be something other than sweat, but
turning the light on revealed nothing
sinister. I don't think I slept nearly as well
for the rest of the night, but I guess I got a
full 8 hours in. I have some vague
memories of dreaming, but I can't seem to
recall enough now to make any attempt at
describing them possible. I can't say I feel
that good this morning. My main complaints are
just the usual stiff, and almost painful
knees, and my right elbow hurting again. It is
not so bad now I have my thick, long sleeved
top on. It is the cold that really sets off
that elbow.
I am happy that my blood glucose is
back to a very ordinary 8.3mmol/l. I would be
happier if it were under eight, but after
yesterday's terrible reading it is pretty
good. The challenge now is to keep it down on
a cold and miserable day. I have no idea what
I am doing today. There seems to be a full
working day train service this morning - which
is strange considering it is a mourning bank
holiday today. It is possible I could go out
to ride on some (hopefully) warm trains today,
but I don't feel that keen on the idea. I
would like to go to Tesco today, but it is
likely that they are closed today, and I can
easily wait until tomorrow.
