Yesterday could have been a nice
day, there were many sunny
spells, and it was dry, but it
was often very windy, and that
wind felt rather chilly. The
maximum temperature was only 19°
C, and on a calm day, while the
sun was out, that might have
felt good.
A slightly odd view
of this mornings weather forecast
above. I took the screenshot
before 6am, and at that time it
wanted to show the forecast for
the last hours of yesterday, which
apparently ended at 6am. This
morning there have been a few
sunny spells, but there is a lot
more cloud than the forecast seems
to predict, and even now it still
seems mostly gloomy out. Hopefully
the clouds will break up, and we
will get some longer periods of
sunshine, but like in the
screenshot above, the latest
revision to the forecast still
only shows full sunshine for the
last hour before sunset. Today
should hopefully peak at 23° C.
Tomorrow is forecast to have 100%
full sunshine during daylight
hours, and that should push the
temperature up to 24°
C.
Yesterday was generally
good, but my night was a complete
disaster. I'll explain that
further down the page. After I
finished writing I treated myself
to a shampoo and shower. From the
feel of it, I probably should have
had a shave too. After allowing
enough time to cool down, I got
dressed, ready to go out.
It was useful that I had
managed to get out fairly early,
and I had plenty of time to get a
few things from Savers, and then
go across the way (to the left
instead of straight ahead to
Poundstretcher) to buy a lot more
stuff from Iceland. The most
important thing I bought from
Savers was a new bottle of high
strength cod liver oil capsules,
plus an extra for a spare for
future use.
The main thigs I wanted
from Iceland was some ready meals
from their low calorie, and
usually low sugar content "My
Protein" range. I also got two
small tubs of ice cream from the
same range. One great annoyance
was that having discovered where
they keep the big bottles of Diet
Coke I found that they had all
sold out. I did but a 2 litre
bottle of (almost) sugar free
mango and dragon fruit Vimto. I
also bought a 2 litre bottle of
sugar free Irnbru.
One discovery I made
yesterday was that at least for
yesterday, I now know where they
keep the instant noodles. For Koka
brand noodles (from Poland I
think) they had an offer of what
amounted to 5p off a pack if you
bought 5 of them. I bought 10 in
total - 5 each of two different
flavours. The final thing was the
aggravation of waiting for a
member of staff to open one of the
two surviving staffed checkouts.
After standing my ground for a few
minutes a member of staff arrived,
and soon there was a queue of
people behind me all avoiding the
self checkouts.
I'm almost forgetting that
I also bough a 4 pack of "tiger
rolls". After getting home, and
putting my shopping away, I had
two of those tiger rolls (which
seemed to have quite a low amount
of sugar in them) with cheese, red
onion and a generous squirt of
mayonnaise (instead of using
butter). They seemed very tasty,
and also filling enough as a
buffer against some beers a little
later in the afternoon.
It all depended on if the
trains were running yesterday.
They were to and from Catford
Bridge, but there were engineering
works that meant no trains from
Catford station. With trains
between Elmers End and Catford
Bridge I looked forward to a visit
from Jodie, and another beer
tastings session. After my lunch I
laid on my bed to read, and I
almost had a snooze, but Jodie
turned up unexpectedly early -
about 3pm.
The first beer Jodie opened
was a plum gose beer. It sounded
like it could be good, but I knew
better. One small sample confirmed
my worst fears - it was basically
manky plums dissolved in battery
acid ! I opened a can of 9%
Kestrel lager, and it seemed a lot
more nasty than expected.
Later on we did have a very
wonderful beer. It was actually an
11% barrel aged porter, and it was
delicious.
Towards the end Jodie was
looking for the cans of Brewdog,
"own label" Ald IPA that I bought
last Thursday. I was sure she had
tried a bit of the first can I
opened last Thursday, but
apparently not, and one night,
maybe Friday night, I drank the
other three small (330ml) cans. It
seems I now have to hope that Aldi
still have some left when I next
go shopping in there. That will
probably be next Thursday.
Jodie left early to meet
Alan at London Bridge, although
all services on his line came to a
stop for some reason, and Jodie
turned around at London Bridge and
want back to Elmers End.
Meanwhile, about half an hour
before Jodie was due to go and get
her train I started to finish
cooking my dinner. While we were
still drinking I had started the
cooking by putting some baby
potatoes, a couple of thick slices
of onion, plus a few spare baby
tomatoes in the mini oven to cook.
The last bit, was to add a couple
of Chinese inspired/flavoured pork
burgers on top of the vegetable
until the burgers seemed cooked.
It was quite a nice
combination of foods, but the pork
burger was not that great, and
although I might try another
flavour if I see any, I don't
think I'll be buying any Chinese
flavoured burgers.....although, on
reflection they might have been OK
if served in a bun to soak up some
of grease.
One problem last
night was that there was nothing
on TV that I wanted to watch, and
maybe I might have eaten dinner a
bit too fast. In turn that seemed
to make it less satisfying. First
of all I filled another of the
tiger rolls with cream cheese, and
then after wolfing that down I had
the last tiger roll with more
cream cheese. That second one did
seem to fill me up - maybe a bit
too much.
It was still a couple of
hours too early to think about
bed, and I passed the time by
looking at some of my old photos.
I did manage to take the
occasional good photo with some of
my first digital camera back in
2006 - plus or minus a few years -
but many were really quite bad,
and doubly so when looked at on a
big screen. I also passed some
time reading stuff on the
internet, but it was a bit boring,
and I went to bed to read quite
early.
As I lay in bed reading I
became aware that I was starting
to feel uncomfortable. I put it
down to over eating, but it was
more complicated than that. Half
the problem was bad heartburn that
started of barely noticeable, but
ended up very bad. This time a
couple of Rennies, antacid tablets
only provide a tint bit of relief.
The other half of the problem was
in my lower half. It felt like I
needed a poo, but nothing was
happening.
It was probably midnight
when I started to pass wind, but
nothing else. I tried to take the
heartburn with a dose of liquid
antacid, and that helped a bit,
but not fully. It was between 1am
and 2pm, possibly closer to the
latter, that I finally passed a
poo, or to put it another way, I
had an arse explosion that
instantly emptied my bowels ! I
felt sort of sore after that, and
I could not believe that there
would not be any after shocks, but
there weren't.
Even my heartburn seemed to
fade away after that visit to the
toilet, but it seemed to get to
almost 4am before I felt
comfortable enough to get to
sleep. I only slept for about an
hour before waking up from a very
bad dream. I have no recollection
of what the dream was about, but I
woke up feeling grim as if I had
seen some terrible act of cruelty
- maybe something so awful I did
not want to remember it.
Anyway, I had a pee - the reason
why I woke up, and tried to get
back to sleep. It seemed really
hard to get comfortable, but I
fell asleep in the end.
One problem was that my
bedroom had cooled down to that
silly temperature where it is far
too cool without the duvet, and
far too warm with it. I managed to
get another hour of sleep, and
then woke up needing another pee,
although there actually seemed no
urgent need for it. It was well
gone 8am when I got up, and I
reckon I was only actually
sleeping for half all that time.
When I finally decided to
give up trying to get more sleep,
I got up feeling pretty lousy. As
well as all the lack of sleep, my
guts still seemed to be a bit
perturbed, although some, or all
of it was probably hunger. I do
feel a lot better since having
breakfast. It turns out that my
breakfast was bigger than ideal,
and if it were not to stop the
hunger pains, and also stop the
burping of the taste of my cod
liver oil capsule, it would have
been better to have skipped
breakfast.
This morning my blood
glucose readings were atrocious !
The Contour meter read 9.7mmol/l,
almost as high as the red line.
The GlucoRX meter reading was less
terrible, but still terrible. It
was 8.1mmol/l. For some reason
only the Sinocare meter gave a
very just about safe reading of
8.7mmol/l. Ideally I should be
fasting until dinner time. I had
to have breakfast for the reasons
above, but I might try and skip
lunch....but I feel too low to
fight it.
After all I ate yesterday,
and I am sure there is one or more
things I have forgotten, it is no
surprise that my weight has gone
up a bit, and it could take a
couple of days to get back on
track - provided I can find the
discipline to eat properly. The
only good news is that my blood
pressure is rather excellent. It
was an "optimum" 102/44.
If there was ever a day
when I should be out for most of
the middle of it, and so not be
tempted to eat anything, today is
that day. At the moment it feels
like today is another day when I
am not doing anything, and can't
even be bothered to wash, but
maybe after I have had a snooze, I
may feel more active. In terms of
going out, it might be possible
that I will take my new battery
operated strimmer out to my
garden, and see if I can tidy it
up a bit more. It needs to be
done, but I can't say I feel any
enthusiasm for it at all as I
write these words.
