I
don't think there was a
sunny spell at 8am, and it
was just as dull as it is
now, and probably will be
for the rest of the day.
Only some drizzle in the
early afternoon is forecast
with the rest of the day
should/could be dry. There
could be a sunny spell or
two towards sunset, and the
maximum temperature today
should reach 17° C, but
without sunshine it will
feel cold. The forecast for
tomorrow is very different
between the Met Office and
BBC forecasts. The Met
Office mostly just says it
will be dull but dry until
late afternoon when there
could be some sunny spells.
The BBC say there will be
mist until 10am, and it will
be followed by just dullness
without even a single sunny
spell. Both roughly agree on
an afternoon temperature of
just a chilly 15° C.
Some of the
consequences of yesterday
were not desirable, and one
was another in a series of
"Why !". On the whole it was
quite a good day, and of
course the bright sunshine
made it seem really good all
by itself. I seemed to have
a very slow morning, but
before the clock passed
midday I had managed to get
under the shower.
I was originally
going to wash my hair as
well as having a shower, but
I thought my hair was not
that bad, and I could save
20 minutes by leaving it as
it was. Once dried and
dressed, I grabbed a
shopping bag, put on my
sleeveless denim jacket, and
stepped out into the
sunshine, with my cheap,
poundland, gold tinted
sunglasses on. I was heading
to the little supermarket on
Catford Bridge.
It was almost a
pleasant walk in the
sunshine, but I was just
starting to feel some angina
pains starting. They never
actually started, but only
by the skin of their teeth.
I can't really describe how
those early warning signs
feel, but by analogy it is
like when you start to get
feelings that mean you need
to go to the toilet sooner
or later, and any delay
could be unfortunate. It was
made very slightly worse
because I walked beyond the
shop to the Pillar Box to
post a birthday card to
Angela - which
should
easily get there by next
Tuesday.
I ended up filling my
quite big shopping bag. I
bought two lots of apples,
some golden and the other
red. Three large oranges.
Four cans of Zubr Polish
lager in four different cans
- each had a different
animal on it. I bought a
selection of instant
noodles, and they included
some tomato flavour from a
maker I had not seen before.
Two "spicy chicken" packs
were made in Pakistan, and
that was a bit of a novelty,
although the brand, Knorr,
was very familiar.
The walk back home
seemed pleasant enough, but
like the walk there, I
arrived home to some warning
feelings that I had reached
my limit before I would have
had to had a 30 second or
more rest before carrying on
if I had needed to go
further. My original idea
was that I would have some
lunch of some apples, and
probably the last persimmon.
What I actually had was two
packs of the tomato flavour
instant noodles. They were
OK, but a poor substitute
for Vifon branded, Polish,
tomato instant noodles.
I didn't have a long
time to wait until the hour
of boozing arrived. It
actually started a bit later
because I suspect Jodie, who
had been to Borough Market,
by London Bridge, had
mis-timed the train and had
an extra quarter of an hour
to wait for the next one. As
well as arriving with a load
of vegetables, she also
arrived with more cans of
beer that she just had to
buy while they were their -
despite having two small
fridges here crammed with
beer, and my recent delivery
of more beer that is waiting
for my fridge space !
Jodie brought me a
copy of The Metro so I could
do the crosswords while she
prepared her lunch, and then
spent ages scrolling through
instagram and other stuff
she does on her phone
oblivious to the world
around her. I managed to do
all the quick crossword,
although I was stuck on one
clue for a few minutes, but
after a quick scan through
the cryptic clues showed
none that seemed to suggest
any answers. I may have a go
at it later today.
About 45 minutes
later Michael arrived, and
he seemed more interested in
music rather than moaning
about his day with his
dementia suffering wife in
the care home. Maybe another
20 minutes passed, and Alan
arrived. It was starting to
become a good session. It
was another half hour or
more before Mark arrived,
and we had full house. The
only thing we didn't have
was any 0% beers for him (he
was driving), but I did find
him a 0.5% beer so he didn't
go thirsty.
Michael, Alan and Jodie
(Mark hadn't arrived when I
took this snap), and of
course I was behind the
camera.
It was quite a long,
and very enjoyable session.
Even Michael stayed well
past 7pm and missed seeing
most of Star Trek: Voyager,
and his beloved Captain
Janeway when he got home.
Jodie, Alan and Mark all
left at about the same time,
and those three bundled into
Mark's car to go and seek
out a pub or bar that served
food. I had been fantasising
about a takeaway Singapore
Fried Noodles for my dinner,
but I realised that was a
stupid idea because although
super delicious, it was a
very expensive option, and I
had plenty of noodles here.
Of course I should
have stuck to my plans
before fantasising, and just
had fruit for dinner.
Instead I had my third
double portions of instant
noodles of the day. They
were a spicy Korean brand,
and their noodles ideally
need extra cooking, and just
pouring on boiling water, as
per almost all other instant
noodles, was not the
recommended way. I still
just used the boiling water
route, and as usual for
Korean noodles, they did
taste a bit floury. They
were also quite hot and
spicy.
It was only a
back-of-an-envelope
calculation using half
forgotten, and even only
guess figures, but three
double portions of noodles,
and not really much else,
may
have only worked out to
around 1500 calories. At the
time, the worst thing was
that those very spicy
noodles I had last gave me
some annoying heartburn in
the night. At first I had
had enough alcohol to send
me to sleep quite quickly
when I tried for sleep
around 9pm.
I have a very vague
memory of feeling a bit
uncomfortable, and a bit
cold, at about 11pm, or
maybe a bit closer to
midnight. I turned over to
my left side, a side I
rarely use for sleeping, and
that triggered the
heartburn. The first thing I
did was to turn the heater
on low to take some of the
chill off the room. I got up
and sat at my computer, and
had some antacid. That
seemed to help, and perhaps
an hour later I went back to
bed.
Unfortunately I could
not get back to sleep
because my right shoulder
and elbow seemed to be quite
painful. I then had to wait
almost an hour before some
Paracetamol calmed that
down. I could finally go
back to bed, and although it
didn't happen quickly, I was
able to get back to sleep. I
know I had some dreams then,
and I think one or more had
something to do with
aeroplanes, but I cannot
remember enough details to
be even sure about that, let
alone try to describe any
dream.
One thing I do
remember about last night is
that I did seem to get up to
pee fairly frequently, maybe
as frequently as most nights
these day, but I seemed to
think that each pee was
quite small. After all that
beer I was expecting to be
peeing gallons ! It was
almost like half the time I
didn't need to get up to
pee, and could have saved it
for the next time. It sort
of suggested that maybe my
blood glucose was not that
high....
I managed to sleep
very late by my usual
standards, and didn't get up
until 8am. I guess I needed,
or deserved extra sleep
after all the time I was
awake in the night. I got up
and as usual went for a pee,
and I was happy to also have
a poo as well. I then got on
the scales and it seemed I
had put on an infeasible
amount of weight in the last
24 hours ! That was a most
unpleasant surprise. I
think, or I hope that some
of it is water retention -
which would sort of agree
with the idea that I only
did small pees in the night.
Some of my health
diagnostics were more
positive than my weight was.
My blood pressure is almost
the same as my average for
this month, 106/44. Two of
my blood glucose readings
were very good, and one was
less good. The Contour meter
read 7.1mmol/l, and the
GlucoRX meter read 7.5mmol/l
- both very good readings.
The Sinocare meter decided
to be very different again,
and gave a reading of
8.8mmol/l. That is slightly
higher than desirable, but
really still some way off
being even moderately bad.
Now the interesting
thing is that I also took a
reading using my now rarely
used Vivachek meter, and it
broadly agreed with the
Sinocare meter. I am
wondering if to get around a
patent, these wholly Chinese
meters use a method that is
a bit too sensitive to
something else in the blood
- maybe something like
alcohol or it's breakdown
products. I am thinking I
might buy yet another blood
glucose meter, but one with
a vaguely English sounding
brand to see if that
produces these random high
readings that are completely
different to the other two
meters.
I have no particular
plans for today except for
one thing. After my shower
yesterday, I left the
slightly bigger than my
usual bath towel in soak. I
knew it was very unlikely I
could finish washing it
later, but today I really
have to go through the chore
of multiple rinses, possibly
even 12 rinses, and with a
towel of this size it is
going to be bloody hard work
!
Other stuff I think I
will do is to check my two
credit cards, and pay off
however much I owe on them.
If it is not too much I may
have a look at Blood Glucose
meters and Amazon, and maybe
order a new one, plus some
test strips for the Sinocare
meter - even though if I do
order a new, less Chinese
designed meter, the Sinocare
meter will most become
redundant. Other than that,
I predict I will do a fair
bit of reading, and almost
certainly some snoozing
today. If I do have the urge
to go out I may go to
Poundland, and at the same
time look over the road to
see if anything is happening
to the closed Wetherspoon
pub.
